1: The Shrinking Cave

In a tangle of arms, legs and wings, Matthew John and Bulmer splash-landed in the pool.

‘Are you all right, Bulmer?’

‘Bit of a ropey landing,’ said the bat. ‘Sorry.’

‘What happened?’ said Matthew John.

‘You were too heavy for me to carry,’ said Bulmer.

Matthew John looked about him. The cave where he lived had grown smaller. He ran up the Crystal Stair to the office from which he
