WHY WE PREPARE?
If you are reading this booklet, the world is likely experiencing or threatened with a catastrophic nuclear disaster or one seems imminent, from war, terrorism or nuclear accident. This handbook is intended for a nuclear accident situation where it is presumed that all forces are collaborating to help one another and provide assistance, but where each of us must take responsibility for our own survival too. While there is no way to predict what will happen, or what your personal circumstances will be, there are simple things you can do now to prepare yourself and your loved ones against the threat from radiation fallout resulting from a nuclear disaster.
If you are reading this booklet, the world is likely experiencing or threatened with a catastrophic nuclear disaster. This may be from war, terrorism or nuclear accident. This handbook is intended for a nuclear accident situation where it is presumed that all forces are collaborating to help one another and provide assistance, such as Fukushima in Japan, but where each of us must take responsibility for our own survival too.
The tragedy in Fukushima, Japan has directed attention to nuclear safety failures and errors and the risk of nuclear radiation contamination. In a worst case scenario of a nuclear reactor meltdown, the fuel rods fuse together, the temperatures get so hot that the rods melt together in a radioactive molten mass that bursts through the containment systems, and radiation is spewed into the ground, air and water. If you remember, the 1979 movie, China Syndrome, which described an ultimate nuclear reactor event, was released on March 16, 1979, coincidentally just 12 days before the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in Pennsylvania.
Many countries, including the United States, operate atomic reactors. Japan has stated that they plan to eliminate atomic power by the end of the 2030’s, but even if that occurs, many other countries plan to continue using nuclear power plants and other countries and their populations may suffer the effects of radiation fallout from the cloud of radiation traveling from other countries far away.
Realistically, however, nuclear radiation fallout can occur in wars, terrorist events and other contentious situations, which may magnify the challenges of coping with the problem.
