    THE LOVE ZONE

Hold the elevator," I shouted as I rushed toward the closing doors.

A tall man with black wavy hair dressed in blue overalls held one of his hands in between the doors. Thanks, I said, as I fumbled through my purse looking for my keys. My badge with my name Sherry Washington and company logo swished from side to side. This had been a long and treacherous day. My boss was getting on my nerves and I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel of my midnight blue convertible so I could let the top down and let the wind blow through my shoulder length freshly dyed auburn hair.

Which floor? a husky voice asked.

I looked up at the man who saved me from having to wait on the next elevator. I almost dropped my keys when I looked into his piercing dark eyes. His face was chiseled as if someone pulled it out a perfect mold. I couldn’t help but notice his full lips as he smiled. If he was wearing a suit, I probably would have flirted, but seeing him in overalls left me feeling a little uneasy. If his attire indicated his choice of occupation, there was no sense in me wasting my time. I only dated professional men.

    Level four please, I responded.

Enjoy the rest of your day, he said, as he exited the elevator on level three.

    I barely said, you too.

If he was one of the construction workers, he must not have been working hard, because his masculine scent lingered on the elevator long after he left. The scent reminded me of fresh pines on a fall day.

I forgot all about the man on the elevator when my cell phone rang. The elevator opened at the same time. I struggled to get to my phone. By the time I located my phone in my purse, the caller had hung up. The missed call showed an unavailable number in the caller display window.

I threw my phone back in my purse and turned the alarm off my car. I exhaled as I sat down behind the wheel. I let the top down, and pressed the play button on my CD player. I needed a diversion and the sound of Sade playing over the airwaves calmed my nerves as I pulled out into the Dallas downtown traffic.

My cell phone rang again. I kept one hand on the steering wheel and used the other to retrieve my phone. Without looking at the caller ID, I answered.

Sherry, where are you? Kevin McGee asked.

Minding my own business, I responded.

We’re meeting my parents at seven. Don’t be late, he shouted.

    I’ll be ready. I
