Jack slow down, Jodi’s in the car—for Christ’s sake. It wasn’t like him to be so insensitive, but whatever crawled under his skin wasn’t worth taking out on their daughter. That’s what really made her angry. The argument had been stupid anyway. What was it I said? It was something very innocent about his mother. Leaving the party early was his idea, not that I wanted to stay, but he harped all the way to his mom’s house to pick up Jodi. He hadn’t spoken a word since and the more Angela protested, the harder he pressed on the accelerator.

I’d really feel better if you’d slow down. She leaned in to check the speedometer.
