How did education in America get to this point? One minute we’re the leader in education of the free world. The next minute, its deterioration and our alarming dropout rate in every newspaper or evening news. I can remember a better time in education. After a day of learning, the only responsibilities were to change clothes, do homework, go play outside and return in time for dinner. My have things changed.
Over the last five years, I’ve researched education brief after brief along with reading results from the most important think tanks on dropouts from difference agencies. The briefs were informative and the research displayed the issues along with suggestions. Many were the same: Researchers have discovered that to identify those most likely to drop out; schools need to identify students who 1) receive poor grades in core subjects 2) possess low attendance rates 3) fail to be promoted or 4) are disengaged in the classroom.
Knowing this information I wondered why we’re still having these problems. Researchers even asked the students what their version of the issues where. Many respondents said 1) classes were not interesting 2) they were not motivated or inspired to work hard 3) the lack of parental involvement in their child’s education 4) the lack of enrichment activities that enhance rather than replicate the classroom.
