About this ebook
This lyrical journey is divided into three sections: Consuelo: A Mother Ode, which explores the maturing mother-son bond; Comet!, inspired by Hale-Bopp; and Scoshee: A Memorial, which touches on our kinship with other species and the anguish the author felt at the loss of his beloved pet, Scoshee.
Stan Renfro
Author Stan Renfro, a Bat Conservation International member, teaches Navajo studies and English at Wingate high school in Fort Wingate, New Mexico. He was also a finalist in the Teacher in Space program.Renfro is currently spending time in Jemez Springs, NM, where he says he's "gone to his homeland to refresh the energy sources of my psyche."Renfro, who taught school until this past February, says he feels a call to arms. "Love is free and yet a money economy is dragging us under. We need the balls to be."An avid earth lover, Renfro says Scoshshee is "barking us back" into a common sky, a common legacy of air and mountain and our energy to do something about our predicament other than cry."Not only does Renfro encourage us to do something about the state of things, he says "we don't have to have a world full of broken plastic things unless that's what we want. Certainly our ancestors gave us the gumption to survive. Not only survive, but thrive, on nature."

Consuelo: A Mother Ode
Comet!
Scoshee: A Memorial
Mother
Suburbanite you ever were,
A lawn your greatest joy.
You never liked the great outdoors
Except by window scene.
My father took me into trees;
A cabin, as a boy,
Started my poetic quest
To keep our planet green.
Together, though apart,
You grew me up, a man
Moorish by design and yet
Scotch-Irish in Èlan.
Preface
The reception at the wedding
You danced, more or less.
The pace was slow, you were upheld
(embraced) walkerless.
Sedate as Cinderella
At a later ball,
Watched by the assembly,
Godmother to all.
Consuelo: A Mother Ode
1
So gradual the phase into
Old age: a door, a hall,
An address at Encino Place,
A view five stories tall.
You've entered every year and
Exited a sager self;
Now you need a knife
