    Chapter 1

The rain fell in endless sheets. Like always it washed the streets clean. The blood that had not so long ago stained the asphalt was gone, swept clean by the rain. Just like the deeds of men, once they’re out of sight they are forgotten by all. The attitude of most people is that as long as it doesn’t affect them, they don’t care.

Even though the blood is gone and the mess has all been cleaned up, and there seems to be no trace left to see, there is still one who remembers.

One who remembers that there once lived a woman who was beautiful and kind and full of love. A woman he had been waiting for his whole life.

She was gone now. Just as her blood in the street was gone, washed away and forgotten. So was she forgotten by all, by all but him, Eesal.

I will come for you, you heartless hunters of men, you cold lifeless demons, you takers of life. I will come for you and when I am gone, like her, you will be no more. I am Eesal, and I too like you am a taker of life.

In the beginning though not human, I walked among them and in doing so I learned of them. How they lived and how they hunted and how they survived. And soon it was that I felt comfort in their companionship.

Though not one of them, I pretended to be such, and in doing so I felt that I could at least not be alone. I even went as far as to think of them as friends. They in turn gave of themselves without asking anything in return. Yes I lived among them and I was happy for a time. I lived among them and I was accepted as one of them. Before a single white man lived here, I was here. I lived among the natives of this land, adapting easily to their ways. Warriors we were, proud and mighty.

We took great pleasure in the games of war we played, and there was great honor in us. We fought our battles and some died, but never did we dishonor or belittle a foe, the greater the foe, the greater the honor. We paid tribute to our enemies, if they were great warriors, we treated them as such.

These people were a simple people. They knew nothing of wrong doing. They didn’t even know what it was to tell a lie. As a matter of fact there wasn’t a word in their language that meant to tell a lie.

I lived among them and I was accepted without question. They respected me as a man and as a great fighter. They didn’t know what I truly was or where I came from. To them I was just Eesal a ghost warrior.

For years I lived among them and I knew a peace in my life that I had never known before.

Then one day the white men came in great ships of wood, and with him came death. If not from the weapons he brought then by the diseases that they brought with them.

Soon it was that I had to once again adapt and become like one of them, the whites that had an eternal lust for gold and power. It wasn’t hard to be as they were, I found that everything about them was easy to mimic.

For years I went from place to place. I watched the white man become more civilized and I thought finally that they might have a chance at becoming something more than barbarians. I had hope that they would finally evolve into a better humanity, a species that could learn from their mistakes, and who could correct the bad decisions that they sometimes had made.

For centuries I watched them and admired finally the progress that they had made. As I watched them I realized that indeed there was greatness in some of them. I applauded their efforts and even envisioned myself helping them in their endeavors.

Once again I was at peace with everyone and everything.

Over the years I worked myself up the scientific ladder to a place where I could give some of the knowledge that I possess to the humans. I had to do it slowly so that no one would be suspicious of whom I really am.

One of the things that I was working on was a type of synthetic blood. It had the same properties as real blood and could be manufactured in large quantities. I did this in hope that mankind would realize that through this synthetic blood they could cure diseases and even extend their lifespans almost indefinitely.

The good thing about this synthetic blood is that it is basically just like real blood, but it doesn’t have any of its impurities. It renews the cells and helps to regenerate them. In this way it helps the body to live far beyond its normal lifespan.

This blood also allows you to heal a great deal faster than you normally would.

I have been working on this new blood for about a year now, bringing it along slow. I have to act like I am doing a lot of experimenting and testing to make it look good. I could if I wanted to, and had the right materials, put the whole thing together in about an hour.

Besides the pretense, I have really enjoyed working with all the people at the lab. They are all good to work with and we all got along really good together. And they are all very good at their jobs.

As I got to the lab this morning, my coworker Rick Bailey was already at the door. Hey Rick what’s up I said? Are you ready to go to work today?

I guess so he said, I had a hard night not much sleep.

Why, I asked him. Are you having some kind of trouble or something?

No, just my girlfriend he said, we fight all the time. He put his hand on the I D pad. Denied it said in big red letters.

Try again I said, that thing is always messing up. They need to get it fixed.

Rick laid his hand carefully down on the keypad again, accepted it said and the lock on the door opened.

As we entered the lab, the other members of our team filed in the door behind us.

There were four more people on my team. We were all working together to make the dream of a synthetic blood a reality.

Of the four members, all were experts in their particular field, and all of them were convinced that I was a certified genius.

Little did they know that what we were trying to accomplish was a minor procedure for me. But like I said I had to make it look good. And besides, I didn’t really mind them thinking I was a genius.

The first member of my team is Rick Bailey. He is an expert on the cause and treatment of the different types of blood diseases.

The second is the sweetest woman in the world. She is a fifty six year old woman named Edna Silverman. She is an expert on anything having to do with the immune system. She’s the key to getting the body to accept the synthetic blood.

The third member of my team is a small man who always has a great suntan. His name is Benjamin Tyler. He is responsible for cleaning the blood and making sure there are no impurities in it.

The fourth member that makes up my team is a nerdy looking fellow named Lester Hinkly. He is a bona fide [I got the degree to prove it] chemical engineer.

And then there is of course me, I am to all needs and purposes a bio engineer.

What do we have on the agenda for today asked Rick?

Today we are going to test the capability of the blood to absorb and transmit food to the cells. If everything goes according to plan we will be one step closer to achieving our goal I told him.

How in hell are we going to cope with all the people if we succeed in making this blood said Rick? I mean if it lets people practically live forever and we keep having kids, pretty soon we are going to be over populated. Where are we going to put them all? We’re going to need a lot more room.

I don’t think you will have to worry about that I said. As many people as there are that dies in car wreaks and other accidents every year, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of time to explore and colonize other planets before we run out of room on this planet.

Of course I didn’t tell them that that was going to be my next project. I was going to show them how to make an engine that would push a ship through space faster than the speed of light. I just had to figure out how I was going to invent it.

We worked all day, me giving them a few intentional mistakes and them telling me that we almost had it.

Suddenly at the end of the day the part that we were working on finally started to work like it was supposed to.

Oh my goodness, it’s going to work said Edna. It’s all starting to come together.

Good job I told everyone, I think we are finally on the right track. What say we call it a night I said? We can start working on the next step tomorrow.

That sounds good said Ben, I’m pretty bushed anyway. It’s good to know we are finally making some progress in the right direction.

Everyone left and I set about locking up the lab. I set the security code and then took the elevator to the first floor.

As the elevator doors opened I heard someone calling my name. I turned to see my boss Dr. Talbert coming towards me. With him was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. They came over and Dr. Talbert introduced her to me.

Eesal, I’d like for you to meet Woina Twofeathers he said. And Woina this is Eesal Hatchaha.

Wataskaha, I said in a simple native greeting.

Wataskaha, she said with a beautiful smile.

What nation are you from, I asked her as we shook hands?

I am of the Louisiana Choctaw she said, and what nation are you from?

I am of the Apache I said. It’s very nice to meet you.

I am glad of that said Dr. Talbert because she is going to be working with you. As a matter of fact she is right up your alley. She’s a bio engineer, just like you. The two of you should have a lot in common.

That’s great I said, I didn’t have to pretend that this news made me happy. She was so beautiful I couldn’t take my eyes off her. When are you going to start I asked her?

In the morning I think she replied. I’d really like to get started as soon as possible. I’m so excited to be working on a project that is along the same lines as the work I have been doing myself. I’ve looked forward to it since Dr. Talbert told me about it.

Well then it is settled said Dr. Talbert, as for right now, I have to get Woina something to eat. She has just now got settled into her hotel and I know that she is famished. Then I have to get home to my own wife, I’ve been holding up her bridge game for hours.

Hey wait a minute I said, I was just on my way to get something to eat. I would be grateful for the company if you would care to join me. I have never liked eating alone.

That would be very nice she said, I too have never liked eating alone

We went to a little restaurant in the Asian part of town. I hope you like a variety of foods I told her.

I have always liked fried rice she said. Chicken fried rice is my favorite.

Mine too I said, already I was captivated by this woman. I couldn’t stop looking at her, that’s how beautiful she was.

We ate our meal and then we sat and talked for hours. It was so easy to be with her, her every move was so graceful. Just hearing her voice was like listening to music. And her eyes, I’ve never seen eyes so lovely. They were black as night and they just mesmerized you whenever she looked at you. She was like a painting that had been done by a great master, unforgettable.

Well I think we had better be getting along she said, I think they are waiting for us to leave so they can close.

I looked around. I didn’t realize that we were the last people in the place. The time went by so fast. It seemed that we had just sat down.

I could see that they were waiting for us to finish so they could leave. I’m sorry I said to the waitress, I didn’t realize we had been here so long.

Its ok she said, love has no time limits.

I was going to tell her that we had just met, but I didn’t want to disappoint her. I guess not I said.

Are you ready to go I asked Woina?

Yes I guess she said, the food was delicious, maybe we can come here again sometime.

That would make me very happy I told her. It’s been a long time since I had the pleasure of a beautiful woman at dinner.

You better stop that she said, you’re going to make me blush.

I imagine you’ve had a lot of men tell you how beautiful you are I said.

Most men don’t look at me as a woman she replied. Where I was raised they don’t care for Indians very much.

That’s one of the things the white man has against him I said. He looks down at anyone who isn’t of his own race. Of course not all of them feel that way. Most of them have outgrown those kinds of stupid prejudices. Only men of a limited mentality think in that manner.

You have a nice way of covering up the mean nature of others she said, I like that.

I drove her to her hotel and walked her to the door.

I had a great time she told me, by the way, what time do we start in the morning?

Let’s say about eight I replied, I’ll meet you there.

She stepped forward and kissed me on the cheek, thank you for a very nice evening she said.

That just made my night. She smelled so good and her lips felt like velvet brushing against my skin. I practically floated all the way back to my apartment.

I thought of her all night long, I couldn’t wait to get to work the next day to see her.

I got to the lab just as everyone was arriving. I couldn’t wait to see Woina. She must have been glad to see me too, her smile lite up the whole room.

Good morning I said to everyone, I want you to meet the newest member of our team. This is Woina Twofeathers I said. She is a bio engineer just like me.

Everyone introduced themselves and then we went into the lab.
