    Six years ago, Jack sat up in bed. The voice in his head woke him with another one. One more criteria. One more barrier to dying. He reached over to his nightstand to get his shiny new blue spiral notebook. He pulled the pen out from the spiral where he always kept it and opened the notebook, searching for the next clean page. He flipped past the pages with tic-marks and charts and titles like, turkey sandwiches, painting your home, and oil changes.

    He uncapped the pen when he came to a clean sheet and wrote across the top of the page, Colds. The voice in his head had just told Jack that he would have exactly 98 more colds before he died. He did some quick calculations in his head. He was 32 years old. Although he never really thought about it before, he guessed that maybe he had two colds every year. At that rate, he had 49 years to go, which would make him over 80 when he died. Not too bad. And maybe he could start drinking more orange juice, taking vitamins, and using hand sanitizer. Maybe knock that down to only one cold a year. Wouldn’t that be something?
