    Holy Order of Sebastian

The Chamber was quiet and tense as they listened to the faint footsteps approaching from over the viaduct walkway. It spanned the canal and connected the two places of worship, in the old days it was mostly used by the Holy order of Sebastian who served both the king and the community in administering the faith all Alexandrians followed devoutly. Now it could be the path that brought trouble to their door in the shape of masked warriors who would stop at nothing until the boy was dead.

Sheriff took his safety catch off of his rifle and prepared himself for a shoot out; with his rifle wedged into his shoulder and his finger squeezing down on the trigger he awaited the oncoming onslaught from the commandos on the other side of the door.

Mars was gripped by the tension as he peered through the window outside a lonely figure approached surrounded by ghostly figures. The man was wearing a plain black gown, which had embroidered white stitching around the end of its sleeves. He wore a collection of beads around his neck, which were garnished with many significant coloured stones and metal figures. On his head, the man wore a black skullcap and his face sported a magnificent white beard of considerable length. This man was of slight build, and his uniform draped a size too large over his figure, a sign of hardship over the years of occupation. Years before he had predicted the return of the kingdom and preached about it in his sermons and now he had become an outlaw in opposition to the new governor.

This eminent man had come prepared. The ghosts of sovereigns looked over his shoulders whilst in his hands he held a tray, which contained a bible, a bottle of water, an engraved knife, a crystal and a lamp, which shone brightly to produce a path of light to lead his way. He walked to fulfil the destiny of his predictions and reunite the communities of this world by banishing evil. This man was no commando he was a holy man who had served the late monarchs. His name was Karma Diya the last priest of the royal order.

Mars sneaked back behind the stone chair, as there came a knock on the door to the chamber. Arsenal looked over to Sheriff and the two men motioned to one another in confusion.

Arsenal pointed to the door, and then with his hand motioned for Sheriff to move forward. Sheriff shuck his head, a new handsignal resounding a definite no to movement!

‘It’s a trick, there trying to draw us out,’ whispered Arsenal, as Mars frantically tried to grab their attention.

A voice called from the other side of the door. ‘By the powers vested in me by the Royal Holy Order of Alexandria, I summon the persons here present to grant me an audience,’ the figure said.

‘Could this be a trick?’ Said Wolfe holding his gun in confusion.

‘I think not, I recognise the man’s voice, I met him years ago before I left this planet,’ said Sheriff.

‘Lets take a chance, if I cover you when you get to the door we should be able to repel anyone if it gets nasty and jam it closed again,’ Arsenal said.

‘It’s too risky, if there’s a group of soldiers they will kill us all,’ said Wolfe in a panic.

However, it was too late, Sheriff had already made his move and was approaching the chambers door. He stopped just short of it and placed his ear to the doors surface and listened quietly. With his fingers, counting down three, two, then one, he eased the bolt on the door. It slid along and clunked open, there was no security now between the inhabitants of the room and the uncertainty beyond it.

Sheriff mumbled a prayer and then swung the door half open, whilst Arsenal altered the position of his body to see around the angle of the door, his rifle at the ready to halt any intruders.

‘Hello my son, I am pleased, to see there is life in this house of god! Blessings are with you and your companions. I am Karma Diya a priest from this royal temple, could I visit with you.’ The priest moved forward as the ghosts disappeared.

Sheriff took a close look at the priest and barely recognised the man, his appearance had changed, but his voice remained the same, and saintly as ever. ‘Please join us your holiness,’ he said as he showed the man into the royal chamber. Confidently the priest moved round the chamber, and as the boy came into view his serious face changed into a picture of pleasure. ‘Sons of this planet, please put away your weapons. I come in peace to see the boy and reside blessings on you all. I come to fulfil the peoples destiny, in releasing this world from the shackles of Lord Jazri.’

The men were disarmed by the preacher’s words, his peaceful manner and saintly face. This indeed was a holy man thought, Mars from behind the throne. The men introduced themselves to the saintly figure, and received a blessing for their part in bringing Mars back to the boy's forefather’s planet. ‘The late King and Queen of Alexandria would have been pleased to see this day. God bless your souls.’

The priest looked down and smiled at him. ‘Forgive me for staring, but I have waited along time for this. A long time to see our heir return,’ the priest said.

Wolfe face reflected his shock, his mouth wide open with surprise. ‘You mean the boy’s a prince?’ he mumbled as he looked around for approval.

‘I told you, we had surprises waiting for you,’ said Sheriff, the look of mischief on his face.

Mars had been placed on the throne of the chamber and no time had been lost in preparing everyone for a quick ceremony. The priest sat everyone down on comfortable cushions and began to recite holy verses from his bible, after a long prayer the holy man looked at the boy. ‘Give me thy name of which you will take the royal position as head of the house of Sebastian,’ the priest prompted the boy.

‘Mars Magellan,’ was the boy’s answer.

    The Crown Elevation

In the early morning light, Mars could just see the path etched into the side of the rock face, the group would have to descend hundreds of steep steps to find their way down to the waters edge. The surface was terribly damp and moss grew over some of the steps, they seemed to deteriorate loosing their shape after years of weathering, and they were brittle under foot, making it hard to balance. It was extremely dangerous.

‘This is impossible; look at the state of these steps. I can not keep my grip. My feet are sliding everywhere,’ said Sheriff.

‘We have no other option but to go this way,’ Arsenal said.

‘Perhaps if we had a rope, we could fix it to one of these tree roots and then guide ourselves down the steps,’ Wolfe added.

‘Unfortunately, we do not have one,’ Sheriff replied.

‘Perhaps if we get lower we could consider jumping, the lakes deep and it could save a few broken bones,’ joked Arsenal.

Mars looked at Arsenal his face full of dread.

‘Perhaps I was being a bit overconfident,’ he admitted, trying to comfort Mars about his intentions.

The group continued to struggle down the pathway, occasionally Mars would look down over the edge of the steps, and the lake was still a long way beneath them. They had only walked down ten flights of steps so far, and there was a long way to go. Suddenly Wolfe slid and fell under the weight of the field bags he was carrying, he lost his footing and bumped his way down numerous slippery steps before grabbing hold of a tree root trailing on the floor.

‘Are you alright,’ Arsenal shouted down to Wolfe, who was trying to pick himself up and regain his balance.

‘I think so, but it is going to hurt later,’ he answered; gingerly placing his weight on both of his feet to make double sure nothing was broken.

From that moment, Mars saw the rate of descent slow considerably as the men helped one another to secure anchor points for safely manoeuvring downwards. Each one of the party in turn, would hold onto a root or rock to guide the others a few steps at a time, therefore reducing the risk of falling. Mars looked over the edge of the steps and then looked back to monitor their journey, he calculated that they were just after mid way on their walk to the quayside where a couple of vessels could be made out below. After another hours descent, Mars stopped to admire a series of small waterfalls, which cascaded over the top of the pathway, they created a tunnel for travellers to pass under, he could see rays of light were captured in the water as the sun rose in the sky.

‘I want to check out the rest of the pathway to make sure it is OK, you all wait here!’ Said Arsenal, as he walked further under the blade of water, after a few moments he reappeared.

‘It’s OK to walk through there are no mines, but it is very slippery, be careful.’
