CHAPTER ONE
You're going WHERE?
,Maggie's best friend Amy was startled by what Maggie was saying to her. They were sitting in an outdoor cafe',near York Town;sipping on freshly brewed raspberry tea. People were busily shopping,or rushing back to work after their lunch hour. Amy looked at her friend,as always admiring the way her long, auburn hair waved down her shoulders.
Her best friend's dark blue eyes were shadowed by stress and lack of sleep. Amy knew Maggie had been hit hard by her husband's betrayal.I've often talked about Helen and Jack,
Maggie was saying,What I want now is to stay with them for a while. I need time to sort out my thoughts, and everything that's happened. Besides, the house has always seemed more Mark's than mine. There are just too many memories.
Helen was Maggie's sister. Both Helen and her husband, Jack ,lived about a two hour plane ride from Toronto,in a beautiful village nestled within the mountains.
Amy had been Maggie's closest friend and confidante for almost ten years now. They both had met in a nearby park in Toronto. From the very first they had been drawn to each other, feeling as if they could tell each other anything.
The two friends were very different in nature. Maggie tended to be insecure, and had a quieter, more reflective personality;whilst Amy never minced words. Yet somehow these very differences complemented their friendship;each drawing strength from the other.
Maggie often leaned on Amy when she needed to be strong, somehow drawing on her friend's toughness to support her. Amy looked to Maggie for sensitivity and compassion for people, and a quieter, more sensitive way of viewing the world. All in all,she knew her decision to leave the city would affect her companion. The friends would miss each other.
She knew Amy was slightly opposed to Maggie wanting to go to a small village to live, where the women would be a long ways away from each other. Amy had hoped she would remain here,to be comforted by her best friend. Maggie thought about the events that had led her to this decision. Her husband of ten years had been cheating on her,and wanted to be with his new mistress,a woman much younger.
She remembered how she had listened to Mark explain that it wasn't her,it was him,he was to blame for the affair. He claimed he had never felt so in love with another human being as he did with Cindy. He was sorry,he explained further, but he wanted a new life without Maggie. A life that didn't include his thirty-six year old wife, but a woman in her early twenties!
Of course,he hurriedly explained, she would still remain well looked after, hadn't he always looked after her financial needs? At this point his voice became wheedling, taking on the tone she knew well when he was running out of patience.
Her first thought was that it was some kind of cruel joke her husband was playing, for his sense of humour often poked fun at her. Lately,it included jokes about her weight,Mark's not so subtle reminders that he was not pleased with her. Maggie had peered closer at his face, but it occurred to her that he was indeed serious. Mark didn't want her anymore,he wanted someone slimmer, younger. Someone who was living proof of his virility. A woman he could show off,and be seen with. 'A woman who was also able to give him a baby?,'she wondered to herself, and her heart felt shattered.
After a while, she could listen to no more;and had grabbed her purse and shakily left their home. She started walking,it didn't matter where;as shock and disbelief fueled her. Maggie was completely unaware of her surroundings. A horrible tightness descended on her chest, and she forced herself to take great gulping breaths of fresh air to calm down.
Maggie found herself staring down at the river that ran alongside a nearby park, and thought how easy it would be to throw herself at it's mercy, for the deep grey water was swirling, and she had never learned to swim. This horrible anguish unlike anything she had ever felt would end;and there would be blissful nothingness. A world where her husband could leave her
