Bookstore Blues

I wasn’t supposed to be working tonight. I was supposed to be finishing up my Christmas shopping (preferably online) while ordering some Chinese food from that place downtown where I never feel comfortable eating alone, and then picking up the copy of For Whom the Bell Tolls that’s been waiting patiently at my bedside table for a good read.

Instead, I get a call from Caroline that her kid’s in the emergency room with a broken leg and she’s gotta bail on her shift at the store, begging me to take over so she doesn’t get in trouble with our manager, Eric, who can be a real hard-ass during the holiday season. When he’s not hovering over us as we complete an order, he’s berating us for not pushing the gift cards and the souvenir magnets on people. It’s like this is the time of year he plays catch-up with the projected sales.

Well, I guess I’m a sucker for my friends because I’m spending my one Friday off stocking books at our little boutique bookstore in the Financial District where most people ignore us and I have no idea how we sustain a shop in such a prime location. Maybe the landlord’s a sucker too.
