Satisfied Bible Study Guide: Discovering Contentment in a World of Consumption
By Jeff Manion

About this ebook
Why is a contented, satisfied life so evasive?
I'll be happy after: the promotion... the new house... the next vacation... What deep hungers drive the crazy consumer lifestyle for so many of us? And why are we often driven more by what our neighbors own than what will truly make us happy?
The Satisfied Bible Study explores the way in which the messages to the New Testament churches were received by the original readers and how these passages can alter the way we view wealth, accumulation, and ultimate contentment today.
Filmed at biblically significant historical sites in Turkey and Greece and in the United States, this six-session, video-based Bible study (DVD/streaming video sold separately) provides an inspiring and transformative vision for living a deeply contented life in the midst of our consumer-driven, materialistic, and often shallow culture. Pastor Jeff Manion weaves masterful contemporary storytelling with rich biblical, historical, and cultural background, revealing the similarities between the struggles of today's culture with that of the New Testament churches.
This study guide contains video notes, individual or group reflection questions, and between-session personal projects enhancing your journey through each of the video sessions, taught by Jeff Manion.
Sessions include:
- The School of Contentment
- Comparison
- Identity Shift
- The Challenge of Affluence

Satisfied Bible Study Guide - Jeff Manion
How to Use This Guide
Group Size
The Satisfied video study is designed to be experienced in a group setting such as a Bible study, Sunday school class, or any small group gathering. To ensure everyone has enough time to participate in discussions, it is recommended that large groups break up into smaller groups of four to six people each.
Materials Needed
Each participant should have his or her own study guide, which includes notes for video segments and discussion questions, as well as personal studies (including a weekly hands-on project) to deepen learning between sessions.
Timing
The time notations — for example (17 minutes) — indicate the actual time of video segments and the suggested times for each activity or discussion. For example:
Individual Activity: What I Want to Remember (2 minutes)
Adhering to the suggested times will enable you to complete each session in one hour. If you have a longer meeting, you may wish to allow more time for discussion and prayer. You may also opt to devote two meetings rather than one to each session. In addition to allowing discussions to be more spacious, this has the added advantage of allowing group members to read related chapters in the Satisfied book and to complete the personal study between meetings. In the second meeting, devote the time allotted for watching the video to discussing group members’ projects, insights, and questions from their reading and personal study.
Facilitation
Each group should appoint a facilitator who is responsible for starting the video and for keeping track of time during discussions. Facilitators may also read questions aloud and monitor discussions, prompting participants to respond and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate.
Personal Studies
Maximize the impact of the curriculum with additional study between group sessions. Every personal study includes a project to complete before the next group meeting, plus reflection questions, Bible study, and a guided prayer activity. You’ll get the most out of this study by setting aside about thirty to forty-five minutes between sessions for personal study, as well as additional time to complete the weekly project. Quotations throughout the personal study are from the Satisfied book.

The School of Contentment
Being content is perhaps no less easy than playing the violin well: and requires no less practice.
Alain de Botton
Welcome (5 minutes)
Welcome to Session 1 of Satisfied. If this is your first time together as a group, take a moment to introduce yourselves to each other before watching the video. Then let’s begin!
Video: The School of Contentment (14 minutes)
Play the video segment for Session 1. As you watch, use the outline provided to follow along or to take additional notes on anything that stands out to you.
Notes
Most of the time, we are unaware of the mountain of things we accumulate. It takes a moving van or a fire truck to help us come to grips with the mass of our acquisition.
[Your Notes]
The teachings of Jesus are piercing:
Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions
(Luke 12:15).
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also
(Matthew 6:21).
[Your Notes]
Questions we have to ask:
• As one who allegedly follows Christ, what claims does Jesus have on my wallet?
• What does it mean to think Christianly
about the stuff that fills my garage, my closet, and my basement?
• How does the one I call Lord
intend to reshape the way I view earning, spending, saving, giving, and accumulating?
[Your Notes]
Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that
(1 Timothy 6:6–8).
[Your Notes]
The voice of contentment says, I’m okay with it and I’m okay without it. I would like it, it would be nice, but I do not need it in order to be whole.
[Your Notes]
Contentment is having a heart that is alive to God and the people around us even when we don’t have what we want.
[Your Notes]
I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances
(Philippians 4:11).
[Your Notes]
We have to learn contentment — enroll in the school of contentment — and most of us will have to enroll more than once in different seasons of life.
[Your Notes]
I can do all this through him who gives me strength
(Philippians 4:13). Paul makes this statement in the context of living the contented life.
[Your Notes]
This week’s project: Count your shoes and your shirts. Give away something of value.*
Group Discussion (39 minutes)
Talk about what you just watched.
1. What part of the teaching had the most impact on you?
[Your Response]
Mountains of Stuff
2. Jeff described three categories of stuff we typically surround ourselves with:
9780310694571_conte_0079_008.jpg Items of frequent use: a microwave, a bed, a coat, etc.
9780310694571_conte_0079_008.jpg Keepsakes: a yearbook, family photos, a dish set passed down from a grandmother, etc.
9780310694571_conte_0079_008.jpg Other stuff: items no longer used
• If you used these categories to assess your current possessions, what percentage would you assign to each? For example, 30 percent for items of frequent use, 15 percent for keepsakes, 55 percent for other stuff.
[Your Response]
• If you were to wake up tomorrow and everything you categorized as other stuff
had somehow disappeared, would you be more likely to feel a sense of relief or a sense of loss? Why?
[Your
