    Chapter One

    Words, words, words. Blah, blah, blah!

    Craig McDowell hammered his fingers wildly across his keyboard producing everything but real words. After getting all of the anger out of his system, he slammed his back against his chair and jabbed the backspace key until he was once again left with nothing.

    He had less than a week to finish writing his research paper, but he couldn't even type a single sentence. He stared at the blank-paged document on his laptop, beaten by disappointment, frustration, and shame. But there was still hope. Once he regained Internet access, his paper would be done in no time. All he had to do was wait.

    His alarm clock buzzed awake. His eyes flashed to the glowing green 7:00. It was time.

    He hopped out of his desk chair, stuffed his laptop in its carrying case, and zipped it closed with lightning speed. He braced himself. This could get ugly.

    45. Breathe. 46. Breathe. 47...

    Beep.

    Luke McDowell checked his chirping watch as he bent one arm into a solid ninety degree angle. It was seven o'clock on the dot. Speed round!

    He swiftly finished off his early morning set of fifty push-ups and bounced to his feet, pumped enough to do fifty more. Or a hundred, if he had the time. Sadly, he did not.

    He swiped his red and white varsity jacket from the hook on his closet door, uncovering a glossy poster of himself dunking the winning basket of his first high school game. It was legendary, but there was always room for improvement. No matter how many world records were broken that day.

    After shrugging on his jacket, he grabbed the basketball perched on one of the many shiny trophies crowding his Trophy Wall and smacked it into rotation on one finger. Welcome to game time.
