About this ebook
Warning! This is a dark and comedic, futuristic fairytale about the terms of the asylum seeker and refugee debate in Australia. It contains mild coarse language, biffo, beer, pork and a lot of hot air.
In this twisted allegory set in 2500 AD, Big Bad Ben, a knockabout, larrikin refugee wolf, is on the run from the humans. Why? Because he’s eaten too many pigs. Big Bad Ben works for the humans and he has to kill and eat mutant pigs from outta space. But the humans turn on him and set him up and throw him in jail.
Then, there’s trouble and discrimination. When he escapes from Earth on a rusty space shuttle to the Planet of Sticks, the Planet of Straw and the Planet of ... you guessed it — McSpaceMansions! — he encounters rejection at every turn by a money-hungry gang of pigs that holds all the power. WE THE PIGGERRY INC., design a pill called Excess and mix it into the drinking water. Every pig on these planets is a glut and is on a constant high of warm and fuzzy thoughts. The irony is that even if Big Bad Ben is granted refugee status, the last planet which he travels to is broke and disconnected.
“This funny re-invention of The Three Little Pigs has more obstacles in front of the poor refugee wolf than a hurdles race. You will squirm with laughter as it is very unsettling.”
- Bluey Smith, The Sacred Cow Times
“This is an underwhelming tour de farce. The author, a Vietnamese refugee, hasn’t quite mastered Aussie slang. He should go back to Slang School. But before that happens, please get him to send me a case of beer and some Vietnamese pork bread rolls for making me read through this post-modern drivel. By the way, who doesn’t love Vietnamese pork bread rolls? Come to think of it, if it wasn’t for Vietnamese-Australians and their tucker, I’d have to eat humans.”
- Hungry Internet Troll
Refugee Wolf is written by a Vietnamese-Aussie larrikin refugee who loves Vietnamese pork bread rolls just as much as sausage rolls.
T.D. Luong
T.D. Luong (Thang Dac) was born on 21 March 1971, the Year of the Pig, during the Vietnam War. The Year of the Pig is considered to be a lucky year in Vietnamese culture and he considers himself very lucky because he came to Australia as a refugee with his family on 20 June 1975, shortly after the war ended on 30 April 1975. Thang’s father, Hai Ngoc Luong, was a persecuted journalist during the war (1945-1975) and died, at age 91, on 2 February 2006. Since that time, Thang has reflected on the impact of war on his family. He is currently working on a novel inspired by his late father. Thang holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication (with a journalism major) and a Masters of Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Technology, Sydney. He also holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales and is a solicitor of the NSW Supreme Court. He is married and a father of two great kids. Thang grew up in, and loved, the Inner West of Sydney in the 1980s (a decade he finds it hard to relinquish). He has previously done freelance journalism and currently works as a lawyer. This is his first published work of fiction.
