Chapter 1 - Introduction
Forget the cupcakes and the cookies— push-up cake pops are a growing baking trend that makes traditional treats seem boring. Each treat looks like a work of innovation, but in reality they are fairly simply to make. Whether you are a professional baker with years of experience or are only just moving beyond pre-made cookies, you can make push-up cake pops.
What Are Push-up Cake Pops?
So, what exactly are push-up cake pops? You may already be more than familiar with the concept of push-up pops in general. They are pops
that are made in specialized plastic mold containers that can be pushed up from the bottom as they are eaten from the top. This makes for a less messy eating experience, and since many of these containers can be washed and reused, it is also more economical.
Tools You’ll Need (Or May Want to Have)
-Push-up pop containers. Obviously, these are essential. You can get them at most large craft stores, like Michael’s and A.C. Moore. Kmart also carries them. Push-up pop containers usually come in packages of six, so be sure to plan accordingly.
-Cake/layer ingredients. These will vary depending on the recipe.
-Baking utensils. Although there are some recipes later in this book for non-baked push-up pops, you’re going to need proper baking utensils (including an oven!) for most. Be sure to have at least a mixing bowl and baking sheet or cupcake tin on hand. Keep in mind that with a baking sheet (cake tin), you will need to cut out the circles yourself. However, even with a cupcake tin you will still need to trim them down to fit the push-up pop container. Since you’re going to be cutting cake into thin layers, the sheet/tin should not be too deep, but if it is, you will have more trimming to do.
-Frosting Bag/Icing Tube. This is not necessary, but since you will often have to get frosting down inside each container, using an icing tube or a frosting bag makes it a lot easier to reach down there. This also helps prevent icing from smearing up and down the sides and creating an unsightly mess.
-Edible decorating ingredients. You’ll want to have things like sprinkles, whipped cream, fruit, and candy on hand for decorating.
-Inedible decorations. Push-up pops are even more fun when the containers are decorated. Sometimes all you need is a little tape and construction paper.
Once you have your materials, it’s time to get started on making your push-up pops. In this book we’ll start with the most basic recipes and go from
