    Nick’s father had instructed him to give up the zombie shelter business even before Joe McKinney had slapped a restraining order on him, but the letter that had been served to him had made dear old Dad repeat the mantra. One hundred feet at all times, no phone calls, e-mails or other communication with Mr. McKinney or his family. No gift-giving and no camping out near the guy’s residence either. Drag.

    Even Nick knew that he was far too old to exclaim but D-a-a-a-d. But he did worry that maybe his engineer father was too bound by numbers and science to understand greater and dangerous possibilities and why he thought that Joe McKinney could help. McKinney was the author of a whack of zombie novels and was an honest-to-goodness cop for Chrissakes. To serve and protect and all that. Surely he would know better than anyone about how to stay safe during a crisis as intense as the zombie apocalypse.

    So, after volleying some spirited e-mails with him, that communication had dropped off and he’d graduated to phone calls to his home. Those had gone unanswered after the first hang-up. That sly old bird must have had call display, but Nick had heard that he was a rational man and that meant that he would see reason if he discussed his plans with him in person.
