On the television, the image was dark. If Haywood didn’t know what to expect, he might not have understood what was going on. There was a woman talking lightly to herself and intermittently to the camera. She was a well-known psychic that Haywood himself often referenced. Her name was Sandra Dean and the recording was over a decade old.
Anger,
Sandra whispered as the TV crackled with static. So much anger.
She raised her voice, looking back at whoever was holding the camera. There is something trapped here.
From the video, one couldn’t tell what they were looking at or where they were, but Haywood had seen it for himself. They were in the basement of the same house he was sitting in at that moment.
A knocking sound came from the basement. Haywood paused the video and stood up off the couch. He walked in a slow deliberate manner, trying to make as little noise as possible. There wasn’t supposed to be anyone down there. In fact, he was confident he was alone. Still, he had to make sure, not for safety, but for peace of mind. Standing at the top of the stairs, Haywood listened. The basement was fully finished with hardwood paneling that had once been nice, but was now marbled with dust and grease. The stairs led into a narrow hallway with a room immediately to the left. The door was open. That was the room.
There was a rumpus room, second master bedroom and a full bath as well, but they might as well have not existed. If anyone managed to get up the courage to go downstairs at all, they rarely made it past the first door.
Haywood watched it. He could see partway into the room; the corner and the hardwood floor. In the video, Sandra had been standing just outside the doorway and the videographer must have been on the stairs. No one went into the room anymore. Three people had died in there over the last forty years-- one suffocation, one suicide and one fatal accident. The number of non-life threatening injuries were uncountable.
He had found this through an intense week of research, but Jenny Flores, the woman who owned the house, had known none of this. All of the previous owners were dead, or plotted to keep the secret of the house. Haywood had gotten lucky when he found an antiques dealer who had purchased the contents of the house years ago. Many objects the dealer now possessed dated back to the original owner and, thus, quite possibly, the initial incident. Amongst
