His Midlife: Your Crisis
()
About this ebook
There is something slightly comic and even pathetic about the stereotypical man who is having a midlife crisis. We can all recall listening with amusement to the tale of a 50 year-old man who has just bought himself a very fast sports car. ‘Oh, he’s going through a midlife crisis,’ we laugh. He starts to wear clothes more suited to a twenty year-old. He restyles his hair to cover the bald patch. He colors it to hide the gray hairs. He goes to the gym to ‘keep fit’. And sometimes he starts an affair with someone young enough to be his daughter. Yes, it’s very sad, but quite funny really.
But there is nothing comical about MLC and the situation the wife faces. Ali Marston has written this very helpful guide for women who find themselves in just this situation.

Now retired from a busy working life that didn't allow much artistic creativity I'm revelling in doing something I love. I trained as a scientist and it's such a joy to think I might be able to write creatively.I've always read crime novels and it seemed the natural genre in which to write. My early teenage years were spent working my way through my father's bookshelves crammed with Mickey Spillane, Raymond Chandler, Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers, although now I enjoy Ian Rankin, Peter Robinson and Elizabeth George.

Introduction
When a good friend told me her husband was leaving her after 26 years of marriage I was shocked. They seemed so happy together. They were both professional people, she an MD and he an eminent heart surgeon. They had two great teenage children, a lovely home and a good lifestyle. Why was he leaving? He told her he needed his space and although he still loved her he wasn’t ‘in love’ any more.
And a few months later another friend told me her husband was leaving her and her son to ‘find himself’ and to find someone who cared about him’.
And then it happened to me.
We had been married 32 years when Michael told me he wanted his own space. This came totally out of the blue although he had had an affair some five years earlier. But we had come through that and put it behind us. We had some fun making up again!
Of course I was stunned and wanted to know why and, more importantly, why he hadn’t bothered to talk to me about his feelings before making this huge life-changing announcement. And you know what – he didn’t want to talk about it!! It was as if I was making a big deal out of nothing. He said I was making him stressed by asking him to tell me why. He said I was causing him to lose sleep and I was being unreasonable.
For several weeks I lived a lie. To the outside world, I pretended everything was fine and I continued to function as though nothing had changed. But inside I was aching. It was real pain, as though I had been kicked in the stomach. And, of course, I didn’t sleep. I spent the nights going over everything time and time again. What had happened to bring us to this? Why didn’t I know? What could I do to change his mind?
After a while the lack of sleep began to tell and friends were concerned about me. I looked dreadful and I was losing weight so I was finally persuaded to take one close friend, Julia, into my confidence. The relief of sharing the burden was enormous. She made no judgments but allowed me to talk and to cry.
It was so hard telling Julia. I felt I was betraying my husband and I was embarrassed. Somehow I had failed because my marriage had failed. Although I am not terribly religious I did believe in my marriage vows. I had promised to be there ‘for better or worse’ and I couldn’t just give up on him, even if he wanted to give up on me.
