    Chapter One

Her face haunts me though I have no memory of her. Yet, if I close my eyes, her image is tattooed on the inside of my lids. I dream of her. A mother that never existed—…never existed in my world at least--, leaving ashes of heartache and an infant daughter behind to wonder if she’d ever existed at all. I’m named after her. Seraphina Melena Graham, the abandoned daughter of Seraphina Melena Gregori, and only child of Samuel Graham. It’s funny how we can sum up our entire existence in one sentence.

I don’t know why I thought of her just now. Birthday cake and decorations littered the dining room table as I peeked out the window a third time, looking for my best friends Lucy and Maya to show up. Two boxes of pizza and bags of various chips crowded the dining room table.

I didn’t need all the fuss and decorations, but dad insisted. As an onlya single father, he took his role very seriously.

Bells chimed, indicating someone was at the door, and I hurried to answer it. Smoothing hands on my jeans, I peeked through the window next to the door. Maya and Lucy waved and grinned excitedly, holding up gift bags with balloons inand bright happy colors in front of them. Maya wore the cutest jean Capri pants with a hot pink Tt-shirt that said Manga Rules! Her strawberry blond hair framed a heart- shaped face with freckles and green eyes a light with mischief. My dad thought Maya could do no wrong. Boy, did he not know herhe didn’t know her. My face hurt from grinning so broadly, and I gestured to Lucy and Maya where they should put the packages.

I had originally planned for us to eat raw veggies and drink water, what with prom coming and all, but I knew you might object. I tried desperately not to smile while saying this and watched the mock horror spread across Maya’s face as she placed her right palm on her chest.

You wound me, Seri. Do you think me so uncouth as to not appreciate a good vegetable plate?

I rolled my eyes. We all knew how much she loathed anything remotely vegetable-like.

Stop playing around you two! It’s quite obvious from the pizza smell coming from the dining area that you’ve got Roadrunners in there.

Lucy flounced past Maya and me to head for the dining room and the pizza. Roadrunners, the local pizza pub in
