Caged Doves Bruiser Parker Book 2 - Tim Hancock

    Prologue

Sixty notes for thirty body parts from each woman. That was one a day they would send to each husband. That would make them suffer, but it would never be enough.

Alone in the dark office the boss hand wrote each note. There truly was nothing like the personal touch. It goes a long way to show how much you really feel. How much you really care.

The simple act of writing the notes helped to soothe some of the pain. To know that they would soon have the women helped even more. Harris and Kelly would soon know what it was like to lose the one you love the most.

The last note was the best of all. It would explain everything to them. It would bring it all home to the bastards. That note would show them that everything you do in your life comes back to you. That note would accompany their wives pretty little heads.

The boss read the letter with trembling hands.

    Mr. Harris,

By now I am sure you are wondering why all of this had to happen. As you gaze once again upon your wife’s once lovely face, you must think, how could anyone be so cruel?

The answer is very simple. You must pay for the things you have done. You must know what the results of your actions feel like. My revenge has been served as cold as the very face you see before you. Make no mistake, it has been served.

You probably never gave it a second thought. You left the court room and handed the files to the DA. It was so easy for you. You never thought what would happen to such a fragile and gentle young man in prison.

It was not at all easy for me. I had to see what they did to him. How badly they mutilated his tender body. It must have been worse on his fragile mind. It was more than he could stand.

He ended his pain that day, but mine has continued for four years. Now it is time for me to put it behind me. I am sure you will be able to do the same one day. If not, you can always end your pain the way my brother did.

The boss folded this last letter and put it in the desk drawer. Everything was set and it was almost time. The man known as Sid was waiting for a signal. He was getting that signal now.

The pager on his side went off. He didn’t speak, but picked up the phone and dialed another number. This number activated several other pagers, setting the chain of events into motion.

Near the junction of State Highway 48 and US 66, Bob silenced his pager and started the new Ford truck. He eased the truck to the stop sign. He waited until the oncoming car was almost to the intersection, and then hit the gas. The truck hit the car, in passenger side door, hard enough to knock it off the highway. As soon as the trucks air bag deflated, Bob turned the truck around and headed to the spot where he would dump it.

Carl silenced his pager and turned on the State Road Crew truck’s rotating beacon. The three trucks behind him followed his lead. They began setting up a detour from the Turner Turnpike onto US 66 at the Bristow exit. They would remove it as soon as the silver Chrysler passed.

Eddie Cooper also silenced his pager. He didn’t need to do anything until after the Chrysler passed him. He started his Oklahoma Highway Patrol cruiser to wait. It wouldn’t be long now. It had begun.

    Chapter 1

Bailey Kelly and Karen Harris gave their husbands and children one final wave through the window of Bailey’s new Chrysler Pacifica. Their long weekend had officially begun. By tonight they would be sipping drinks and turning heads by the pool at a luxury hotel in Dallas with their two best friends Shay Miller and Kaitlyn Campbell.

Their husbands, Brian and Brad, were keeping the kids for four days. Shay’s husband, Hank, was already on his way from the city to join them. Kaitlyn’s man, the great Bruiser Parker, would be there later the next day. It was great of the guys to agree to let them get away like this.

The girls were on their way from Tulsa to Oklahoma City to pick up the other half of their quartet. They had been planning this trip since Brad and Karen’s son was born six months ago.

Once they were on the Turner Turnpike, Bailey sat the car’s cruise control on eighty. Their entire trip was already entered in the vehicles GPS navigation system. Bailey loved the car. She had since the day Brian drove her to Crown Bristow to pick it up. The comfort and luxury would be welcome on this long trip.

Bailey could not help but notice the troubled look on Karen’s face. She knew what it was all about. She had been there herself. She smiled and patted Karen’s hand.

Relax; the baby is going to be just fine. Brad is a great dad and he is going to have plenty of help. My girls will be there to spoil him rotten.

Karen forced a smile. I know, this is just the first time I have been away from him for more than a few hours. I’m not so much worried, it’s just that I already miss him. Not to mention I feel a little guilty.

Bailey smiled herself. Here’s a little advice from a mother of three. Cherish your time away. It’s few and far between. It makes being together that much better.

Karen relaxed a little. I guess you’re right. Besides, it will be nice to get more than a couple of hours of sleep at a time.

    Bailey giggled. There’s always that.

They both laughed after that. Karen changed the subject. So what’s the plan?

Bailey thought for a second. We pick up Kaitlyn in Edmond, then Shay in the City. After that it’s non-stop to Dallas. Tomorrow we drive to San Antonio for two days.

Karen nodded in agreement. It’s gonna be great, but remind me again why we didn’t just fly?

Because getting there is half the fun.

The detour at Bristow took them by surprise. It had not been there when Brad and Karen drove up from Guthrie earlier. It looked as if it had just been set up. Bailey didn’t mind. The short trip up route 66 to Stroud wouldn’t cause much of a delay. It was too bad the tornado had taken out the outlet center or they would have to stop.

As they made their way through downtown Bristow Bailey admired its tenacity. Unlike so many Oklahoma small towns, Bristow seemed to hang on with a vengeance. In spite of everything it still held its charm.

As they headed down U.S. 66 neither women could help but admire the Fire Fighter statue that Clayton Coss had carved with a chainsaw out in front of Crown. It was a tribute to September 11th and a way to preserve a dying Pecan tree. It will always make you think.

When the state trooper pulled out behind them with lights flashing Karen couldn’t help but laugh. Getting there’s half the fun, right Bailey?

I wonder what he wants; I wasn’t even going the limit.

She pulled the car over in a gravel parking lot. A uniformed trooper got out of each side. Neither of them took the time to find this unusual. Bailey lowered her window.

The officer didn’t remove his dark glasses when he spoke. Will you ladies step out of the car please?

Bailey couldn’t help but think there was something not quite right about the whole thing

    Is there a problem officer?

Miss, get out of the car now! I am not going to ask you again.

As soon as the two friends got out of the car they felt a sharp sting and their whole world went black.

    Chapter 2

Dr. Kaitlyn Campbell stood on the deck in the back yard of the home she shared with Bobby Parker. She was trying to get a firm hold on her emotions.

She could not believe how much her life had changed. Just eight months ago she had been like a frightened child under her father’s oppressive control. Then she met Bobby.

She had just lost her mother and watched a man murder in cold blood. The killers came after her next. Her father had been behind everything, her mother, the councilman, and the plan to kill her. His big mistake had been to hire Bobby to protect her. He had done so much more than that.

They fell in love the moment they met. Not long after that, her father committed suicide in jail.

Everything in Kaitlyn’s life had been different since. Most importantly she had Bobby. They were beginning to make a life together. She had a new job in the emergency department at Edmond Medical Center. For the first time in her life she had real friends.

This was what had her so worried today. She was going to spend four days alone with these friends. She only hoped she could measure up. These were three very strong women.

She wasn’t too worried about Karen Harris. She was very close to her. Karen was a Drama Professor at the University of Central Oklahoma where Bobby taught History. Her and Karen spent a few hours together almost every day. Karen’s husband Brad is the owner of a very prestigious corporate Law Firm. He and Karen were a lot alike.

Bailey Kelly on the other hand intimidated the hell out of her. Bailey was a few years older than she was, and drop dead gorgeous. Even after three kids. Bailey and her husband Brian head one of Oklahoma’s largest security and investigations firms. She is just barely five-foot, but Bailey has more self-confidence than most people, man or woman. People have been fooled, or even taken in by her fragile, helpless appearance. Most of them have come to regret it.

Shay Miller intimidated most people. She was almost six-foot and built like the proverbial brick shithouse. She was almost as physically imposing as her husband Hank. Kaitlyn didn’t know Shay as well as she did Karen and Bailey. She hoped that would change this weekend.

The point was these were all beautiful, self-confident women. Kaitlyn had made a lot of progress in the last few months, but she still had a way to go in the self-confidence department.

She smiled as she caught her reflection in the mirror-tinted glass. She had long, wavy blonde hair, good skin, a great tan and a better than average body. "Well girl! That is one place you can consider yourself their equal."

She checked her watch; it was past time for them to pick her up. She took the sundress off the lounge chair and put it on over her hot pink bikini. Her bags were packed and now she was ready to go.

She went inside locking the back door behind her. She still didn’t have her anxiety in check, but she had no plans to break down. She checked the time again. They were over a half-hour later and that was allowing for delay time. To ease her nerves, she called Karen’s cell phone number. It rang six times and went to voice mail.

Kaitlyn began to get a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. She tried Bailey’s cell with the same results. Her bad feeling was getting worse. She was starting to feel desperate now. She dialed Shay’s number. Shay answered on the second ring.

Shay, this is Kaitlyn. Have you heard from Bailey or Karen?

    Are they not there yet?

"No. We should have been there!! by now. I tried both of their cells but got nothing."

Ok, don’t panic yet. What time did they leave?

Over two and a half hours ago. Brad called to let me know they were on their way.

Take it easy Kaitlyn. I’ll call Brian and see if he has heard anything. Sit tight, I’ll get back to you.

Kaitlyn hung up the phone feeling worse than ever. She could not just sit tight. She had to do something. For lack of a better idea she dialed the number to Bobby’s pager. She knew he was in class and hated to bother him, but this feeling told her it was important.
