Chapter One
Hurry, you have to see this! I think I found a way to reach Greg,
Bobbi Collins shouted. She sat yoga-style on the floor with the newspaper spread open in front of her.
Her sister Brianna sprinted from the kitchen and hovered with both hands on her hips. What’s all the noise about? The way you screamed scared me to death. I thought someone had abducted you.
The vacation section of the newspaper contained a three-page spread about a psychic event in Cape May. Bobbi got up and went over to open a window to let some cool air in. After grabbing the newspaper from the floor, she dropped to the sofa and spread the article about the psychic fair across the coffee table. Maybe now I can get some answers.
What are you talking about?
Brianna asked. Crinkling her forehead, she glanced at the pages. Have you gone off the deep end? Don’t tell me you believe people can communicate with the dead? I told mom when she went to the psychic in town it was a waste of time. They’re phonies.
A sudden thud on the front door startled Bobbi, and she craned her neck to look at her sister, hoping for a reasonable explanation. The same odd noises had occurred at her place over the past few years. She’d had enough of the thumps and knocks with no explanation that began on the anniversary of Greg’s death. She craved a night of uninterrupted sleep and a day free of strange interruptions. The gold crucifix in the archway had flown off the nail and landed on the wooden floor. With a sudden chill and uneasiness, she moved to the edge of the couch. Did someone or something not approve of the psychic fair?
For years, she’d desperately tried to find the reason behind her fiancé’s accident. The endless search for answers left her drained and uncertain of what had really happened on that horrible day five years earlier. It still seemed like only months since Greg had died. She placed one hand on her chest, touching the locket with his picture inside. Wearing it was the least she could do for the man she loved.
I can’t believe how careless the kids are today. The parents across the street should take their son to the park to play ball.
Brianna snapped as she marched to the front door. She opened it and looked around. He could have broken something. Everyone today is in such a hurry.
Her harsh tone made her sound like a bitter old woman, rather than thirty-eight, eight years older than Bobbi. She huffed into the kitchen.
Bobbi rolled her eyes, grabbed the article, and tagged behind. What do you think? Should I go?
Mom will be home from work soon, ask her. You two are the paranormal fans.
Brianna opened the refrigerator and took out an iced tea,
