COMING HOME

The summer afternoon had melted into gold. Motes danced in shafts of sunlight that spilled warm colour across the bookstores. Bees droned outside, the murmur drifting through open windows. Jem was so immersed in shelving a stack of books taller than he was that the ding of his phone startled him. He could tell by the cheerful sound that it was Carlton.

He paused, looked longingly at his pocket, then looked back at the shelves. They seemed to have suffered some kind of explosion; that was the last time Jem let teenagers play with his books unsupervised. He should really work. He sneaked out his phone to check it.
