About this ebook

Prologue:

I look around, and all I can see is darkness. The moon provides me with enough light to see that I’m in the centre of a massive field, that seems to be vacant. I try to remember where I am, or how I got here, but I have no luck. I take a few steps forward, struggling to see ahead of me. The darkness that surrounds me threatens to swallow me whole, with no chance of escaping. Suddenly, I hear footsteps behind me. I turn around quickly, to see a dark figure approaching me. I freeze, not knowing where to hide. I can sense that whatever it is, is bad. I can feel the negative energy, eating away at me. The figure walks right by me, seeming to look right through me. Can they see me? The figure makes an abrupt stop, a few feet away from me. It seems to be human, wearing all black, with something covering its face. Just as quickly as the first figure appeared, another one appears, seeming to have come out of mid-air. As soon as I acknowledge his presence, I suddenly calm down. I’m not scared anymore.
“Give me what I want,” the first one says to the figure that just arrived, demanding something. I know that voice, it’s a male. I’ve heard it before, but where?
“No. She’s not yours,” the second boy responds calmly. They know each other; I can feel the tension between the two.
“Then I’ll get her for myself,” he says. Where do I know that voice from?
“You will not. I will ensure that that doesn’t happen,” the second boy says, and I feel calm again. For some reason, I feel like they’re talking about me, even though I’m sure they don't know I’m here. The first boy raises his right hand, with his palm facing the other boy. I can feel that negative energy again, and it’s getting worse. The wind picks up, throwing my hair all over my face. The boy with his hand up starts saying something, almost chanting it. I can’t make out the words, with the tempestuous wind blowing heavily in my ears. I feel like I’m spinning. The evil boy starts screaming. It’s so loud, that it hurts. Everything starts spinning even faster, and the boy’s screams become more furious. I can feel the power that is within him. Suddenly, he stomps his foot on the ground with such force, that the other boy goes flying backwards.
My eyes shoot open. I’m lying on my bed, with sweat dripping down my forehead and my heart beating so loud, it sounds like there’s a drum in my chest. It was just a dream. My hands are clenched onto my blankets so hard, that my fingers are turning red. I slowly release my hands, and slow down my breathing. I turn my head to see the clock sitting on my night table. The bright red numbers indicate that it’s early in the morning. I look out my window, and look at the moon. That felt so real. I can still feel the coolness of the wind on my cheeks, and the power that the first boy had. Before I know it, I’ve drifted off into a deep sleep once again.

    Chapter 1:

Let me tell you a story, about a girl and a boy. He fell in love with his best friend, when she’s around he feels nothing but joy. But she was already broken, and it made her blind, and she could never believe that love would ever treat her right. Did you know that I loved you, or were you not aware? You’re the smile on my face, and I ain’t going nowher-

Sutton, you better get going, you’re going to be late! My mom calls from the kitchen, interrupting my music. Darn you, mom. I was jamming out to my man, Justin Bieber.

Yeah, I’m just leaving! I call back, as I turn off the music.

I look in the mirror one last time before I leave the house. Honestly, I like the reflection that I see. My name is Sutton, and I’m 16 years old. I have long, dirty blonde hair, and it’s my favorite thing about my appearance. I have darker skin, and hazel eyes. I'm fairly tall, just like my mom. I’m your average teenage girl. I like music, boys, and having fun with my friends.

Today is the first day of summer vacation, and also my first day of work at Mary's Market, the local grocery store. I’ve heard that the hot, popular junior from my school is going to be working there too, so that makes it even better. His name is Jake, and he has dark brown hair, and green eyes. Honestly, he’s gorgeous. He plays just about every single sport you can think of, and is really good at all of them. Him and I have very similar personalities, we’re both very outgoing and go with the flow kind of people. He’s really relaxed and I like that in a guy. I can’t stand people that worry about everything.

I grab my brown bag from my bed, and head to the kitchen.

Bye mom! I call out, and then head out the front door. I live in a small town in Canada, called Lake Cowichan, and I can walk to practically anywhere within the town.

There's only one high school here, so I know most of the kids that live here, seeing as we all go to the same school. I love living in a small town where everyone knows everybody, and there isn’t always a lot of people here. I like how simple everything is, and I don’t think I could handle living in a big city. Too many people is not my thing.

When I get to the market, I’m not nervous at all. I guess most people get nervous on their first day of work, but not me. I like to try and stay relaxed about everything, and not worry about the little things. The market sells your basic grocery store items, such as bread, dairy products, and fruits and vegetables. Everything, other than the fruits and vegetables, are inside a building that used to be an old barn, but it’s now been transformed into the store. The fruits and vegetables are kept outside in front of the store, giving it more of a market feeling.

The owner of the market is Mary. She’s an old family friend, and I’ve babysat all of her grandchildren. As soon as I walk into the building, I spot her in the back corner of the market and walk over to her.

Hello Sutton, she says to me, happily.

Hi Mary, I respond, and give her a big smile.

I’ve got another person about your age starting here today too, so I’ll wait until he shows up until I show you how things around here work, she explains to me, as she continues to restock the watermelon display. Ah! I bet the other new guy she’s talking about is Jake. I can’t wait to see him. And work with him. And stare at him. And flirt with him. Okay that’s creepy, but still.

Fill these out while we're waiting, Mary says, handing me some forms. I guess I got here early after all. I go over to a picnic table outside and start filling them out. It’s just contact information about me, so I finish it pretty quickly.

I’m actually glad that I’m working on my first day of summer holidays because I need to distract myself from things. I don’t want to think about him. Trevor. Ugh. We dated for a couple of months, and I thought I loved him. He changed my life, and made me really happy. But then one day out of nowhere he dumped me. Just like that, with no explanation at all. I see him around town every once in a while, and he just smiles at me. I never return the smile though, because how can you smile at someone that shut you out so easily? I hope he doesn’t see how much pain I’m in when he looks at me, because I don’t want him to know that he hurt me. I’m the type of person that no matter what, will never admit defeat. The way I see it, Trevor won.

Sutton? I hear, bringing me back to reality.

Oh! I say, when I realize that Mary is standing right in front of me. I see that to her left, is a super cute guy that I’ve never seen before.

This is Zack, he’s the other employee starting today, Mary says as she looks at him. Well, he’s not Jake but he is super cute. I could definitely spend the whole summer working with him.

            Hey, I say to him.

Hey, he says back. His voice sounds strangely familiar.

We have another boy starting tomorrow too, she continues. Oh gosh, I hope it’s Jake. I can’t really think of anything better than working with two super cute guys, for the entire summer.

For the next hour, Mary teaches Zack and I how to restock shelves, work at the till, and make sure we're clear about the rules of the job. Once she was done, she asks us to start restocking some of the shelves with food together. When we get started on that, I decide to start talking to him.

I haven't ever seen you around before, are you new here? I ask. He looks kind of shocked that I was talking to him.

Uh, yeah. I just moved here from uh... Ontario, he responds.

Oh, that's cool. Are you going to be going to Cowichan High in September? I ask, already knowing the answer. Everybody goes there.

Yeah, do you go there? he asks.

Yeah, I'll be going into grade 11 next year, I say.

Me too, he says, suddenly seeming happy. We continue stocking apples in silence for the next couple of minutes. He is really, really cute. He has the most gorgeous brown eyes, and I could just stare into them for a really long time. His hair is light brown and longish, and he has it flipped off to one side. He's about my height, and pretty skinny. He's got an innocent little face, that makes you just want to love him. I don’t know, I’m weird. He has this smile plastered onto his face, and when I look at him, I feel happy. He sends out a positive vibe. Why does that sound familiar?

So… your name is Sutton? he asks after a while.

Yeah, I say, giving him a smile.

That's a cool name, he says.

My dad named me... I say, suddenly wishing I didn't. My dad passed away when I was eight, and it’s still a touchy subject for me. He sees the expression on my face and decides not to ask about it. Just then, Mary comes up and saves us from an awkward silence.

Looking good, she says, admiring our work with the apple display. We did do a pretty good job. Zack and I planned it all out. We make a fabulous team. I can tell already that we're going to work out well together.

Now I'd like you to go outside and unload some strawberries, she says, and we start walking outside. I'm glad, because inside the little building we were in is dark and stuffy. When we get outside in the sun I can see Zack’s face better. He sees me looking at him and smiles at me. Oh my, he gives me butterflies in my stomach. I never get nervous around guys, but for some reason, he's making me nervous. He seemed really shy inside but once we got outside he seemed to relax a bit. We went out to the back of the main building that is really a barn, and carried the boxes of strawberries to the front of the market so we could unload the boxes into the display cases. This job has a lot of heavy lifting, which is fine because I'm pretty fit. We started joking around a bit.

What’s your favorite animal? he asks, randomly.

            Um, a giraffe, I respond.

Giraffes are cool, he says. Long necks and stuff... This kid is so random.

Haha, exactly. What about you? I ask.

Uhh, monkeys are pretty awesome, he responds. I can tell that he just says whatever he wants, and that’s fine. He seems like a very simple person. I couldn't see him having secrets, or telling lies, or anything like that.

            Indeed they are, I say.

What’s your favorite color? He asks. Apparently we're playing a favorites game.

            Light blue, I say.

            Me too, he responds.

That's awesome, I say. What’s your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

            Play Xbox, he says.

            Me too! I exclaim.

No way, a gamer girl? he asks, in shock.

            Haha, yeah, I say.

Do you have Xbox live? he asks.

Yup, do you? I ask. I'm really not trying to impress him, but it seems as though that’s what I'm doing. I honestly love playing Xbox.

Yup. What’s your favorite game? he asks.

            Portal 2, I respond.

That game is awesome. I finished it a long time ago though, he says.

            So did I, I say.

We just moved into my new house though, so I haven't got my Xbox set up yet, he says.

That sucks, you should come to my place and game with me sometime, I suggest, not sure if I was serious or not.

That would be sweet, he responds.

A little while later, Mary comes over and tells us that our shift is over, and that we can go home now. Zack and I go to the back room to get our stuff together.

What area do you live in? I ask him, hoping that I didn't sound too creepy.

I'm not exactly sure. Right by the bridge though, he responds.

I live near there too. Are you walking home? I ask.

Yeah, he says. Perfect. I see a great opportunity here.

Sweet, we can walk together. I mean, if you want to, I suggest.

That would be awesome, he says, giving me another one of his amazing smiles. I really hope that he means that he wants to walk home with me; he's not just saying it to be nice. He couldn't really have said no, now that I think about it; it would have seemed mean. We leave the market and start walking. Five minutes later, we have to go off in different directions.

Will I see you tomorrow then? he asks hopefully.

            Yup, I say, smiling.

Good. Bye, Sutton, he says. Wow I love his smile. I also love the way that he says my name. Is that weird? I don't care.

Bye, Zack, I respond, and start walking away, towards my house.

When I get home I head straight to my room.

Sutton, is that you? my mom calls out from the living room.

            Yup, hi mom, I say.

How was your first day? she asks.

            It was awesome, I respond.

Was that cute guy Jake there? She asks. I smile. She knows too much to be my mother. It's not normal for a mom to know as ,ugh as she knows about me, but oh well, she's cool.

No, but a new guy in the town was, I say, and turn away to walk to my room. That's all I’m going to tell her. When I get to my room I throw myself onto my bed. Zack is adorable. His smile, his laugh, his face.  We have so much in common, too. But no, I like Jake. I walk over to my Xbox and turn it on. I play for a minute but I can’t keep my mind off of Zack.

    Chapter 2

I'm in the field again. It's darker than it was last time. I look around for the two guys, but they're nowhere to been seen. How do I get out of here? I hear movement behind me so I quickly turn around, to see the guys, suddenly standing there.

How dare you? One of them asks the other. It's the evil one, the one with the powers.

I'm making sure that you stay away from her. You have bad intentions and I'm not going to let you hurt her, the shorter one says. I'm super confused.

We'll see about that, the evil one says, and then disappears. Just then, my alarm goes off.

I sit up and try to process the dream. It was similar to the one from last night. I have no idea why I would dream something like that. It must be scenes from a movie I've seen or a book I've read, or something like that. I get out of bed and work on getting ready for the day. Today is going to be an exciting day because I’m going to get to see Zack and probably Jake. I hop into the shower and think some more. Jake knows who I am, right? I mean, our school is pretty small, and it’s not like we've never talked before. I get out of the shower and
