About this ebook

I have nothing to confess. I’m Luke. I moved here from Illinois and that’s all I have to say about that.

17-year-old Luke Geoffrey is hiding out—or at least, that’s the plan. The tiny town of Kwahnesum, Washington seems the perfect escape from all the people who want little pieces of him, including his un-pleasable father. Mum will come to love Kwanesum; she’ll stop acting crazy and relax.
But when Luke is nearly killed by a cougar and rescued by a girl with green eyes, his heart is turned upside down. Now his two worlds are crashing together. Should he tell Brigitta his secrets? Or will knowing them only drive her away?

Katherine Grace Bond

Katherine Grace Bond is the author of THE SUMMER OF NO REGRETS (Sourcebooks, May, 2012), and of the bestselling THE LEGEND OF THE VALENTINE, a story of the Civil Rights Movement. She lives with her husband in a dimension populated by younger people, some of whom resemble her.

    Author’s Note

When I was writing The Summer of No Regrets, I noticed that Luke disappeared a lot. I wanted to know where he was going, and why he sometimes came back so surly. So I asked him. In response, he wrote me a journal of his days during that summer of no regrets. When it was done, I saw that it was a book all its own, with its own story, separate from Brigitta’s. So if you’ve wanted to know what Luke was thinking and doing all that time, what his feelings were about Brigitta from the very beginning, and why he made some of the choices he did, read on.

SPOILER ALERT: If you don’t know who Luke really is, you will when you read this. So you may want to read The Summer of No Regrets first. On the other hand, if you’re one of those terrible people (like my husband) who read the last page of a book before starting it, you may enjoy reading the journal first and then the book.

    Dedication

For Annika Browne, my honorary daughter, who wouldn’t let me quit.

I don’t think this hiding out thing is going to work. I have to be in too many places, and if I’m gone, there’s no one to look after Mum. The movers are done and Kenny’s gone back to LA to torture all his other teen idols. (What’s a manager for?) Todd’s sticking around until tomorrow and then I’m on my own, but I don’t think I need a bodyguard out in the middle of Nowheresville.

Since this is a journal and I’m not showing it to anybody, I may as well admit I’m nervous. Kwahnesum, Washington, which I can’t even pronounce, is smaller than some of the sets I’ve been on, and loaded with trees. I’m okay with trees, but it’s like I’m sealed off here in a no one can hear you scream kind of way.

Okay, that’s extreme. I’m not afraid to be here—it’s not like the woods are full of clowns. (God, I hope no one ever reads this.) It’s just that I have no schedule here, no manager (one good thing), no get up at 4:00 to be in the makeup trailer by 5:00. It’s just me. And Mum. And I don’t know if being here will make any difference for her. And it was my idea, which means if she gets worse, that’s kind of my fault.

We turned Bryan loose today as Trent. He wants to hang out with Gwen at the ranch and I said that would be all right. Good decision? Who knows? It could sink both me and Gwen. But if it means it’ll look like I’m taken, I’ll go along with it. Why
