Zander Buckingham

Zander Buckingham is 87 years old; lives in the mountains of Colorado; and has been happily married to the same woman for 63 years. When he graduated from college in 1951 he wanted to write books. But he didn't want to starve in some attic while he was trying to become an author. So he started as an advertising salesman with a newspaper -- then went with increasingly larger companies and ad agencies doing successful advertising and public relations work. (One gets a great deal of experience in fiction writing in those situations.) As a hobby he wrote a couple short stories. He never tried to get any published. They just sat around by his typewriter until he heard about Smashwords. Zander is retired and writes as a hobby.

    Chapter 1

Luke Anderson woke up. Bright lights were smarting his eyes. He was in bed with white stockings on his legs. The stockings seemed to pulse. Some kind of tape that also pulsed wrapped both of his arms. He thought he remembered a crash. He had been driving at about 70 miles an hour on the interstate highway when his car seemed to fly off a bridge towards another highway below. If it wasn’t a dream, he should be dead. At least badly hurt. Was this some kind of after-life?

A nurse came by. At least she almost looked like one. She was wearing white slacks and some kind of form-fitting blue top. She was truly beautiful. He knew he had seen her somewhere before. And now there were two other nurses in the room. They looked exactly like her. What the hell was going on?

Hello Mr. Anderson, the first nurse said with a smile. We are pleased that you have rejoined the living. As she noted the alarm on his face she continued, I know you’re confused, but please don’t panic. You’re safe. You’re alive and soon you’ll be well. Then she lightly touched his shoulder. As he slipped back into sleep he noticed the strange ring on her finger. It flickered.

The police are still investigating the major accident that occurred two weeks ago at the junction of Interstates 25 and 70, the Public Radio news announcer said. "A Lexus convertible somehow soared over the railing on I-70 and fell onto I-25 below. But even more strange is the fact that the driver of the car is missing. Bystanders report that he was pined in the remains of the demolished car and must have been badly hurt or maybe dead. But when the ambulance arrived he was missing...

Hello again. It was the beautiful nurse with the funny ring on her finger. He looked down at his legs. Today he could feel them. They were still in those white stockings that seemed to pulse.

What’s going on here? He realized he was shouting, but he continued, I know this isn’t a hospital. But what is it? And why am I here?

She still smiled at him. You’re here to get well Mr. Anderson. We have repaired the injuries from your accident and now we are treating your other sickness.

    What other sickness? He interrupted.

You had stage four lymphoma which was cancer in your lymph system. It bas been mostly taken care of. However your system is still recovering, so you must stay here a few more days.

    Isn’t lymphoma fatal?

In your world, yes. You would have died within six months. But we already knew all about you and we needed your help. So we saved your life.

"What do you mean you saved my life? Did you have something to
