    1. Online dictionary, results for narcissist: someone in love with themselves. A person suffering from a psychological condition characterised by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem. A person feeling erotic pleasure derived from contemplation or admiration of one's own body or self.

    2. Wikipedia: The term is derived from the Greek mythology of Narcissus. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.

    3. A common mistake is to label well-groomed men as narcissists, connecting the term to for instance dandyism, the New Romantic and metrosexuality. Apparently only women are allowed to take pride in their looks.

    Act 13

A model for Barrie’s twins in 'Peter And Wendy' seems to have been Blib and Blob from Seymour Hicks’ 1901-play 'Bluebell in Fairyland', Ghita Nardin said and avoided eye-contact with the students. Barrie himself says that the twins cannot be described as we should be sure to be describing the wrong one.

Charlie hung on her every word. He was a third year student at the Department of English Literature, and he had chosen the course in classical children’s literature because he figured that not many guys would take it. Charlie had been right. Besides him there were only two other guys in the auditorium, the rest being girls.

They had just finished reading 'Alice In Wonderland' and had moved on to 'Peter And Wendy'. The books were all right, Charlie supposed, not his favourites as he was more into Shakespeare and Byron and stuff like that, but the course had one big advantage. It was taught by Ghita Nardin, The Torn Beauty.

Of course Charlie knew Ghita as she was a Ph.D. student at the English Lit department, but not until he took this course had he realised just how beautiful she was. Underneath the pink hair, studs, tattoos and shabby clothes, that had earned her the nickname, was a slender, dark girl who made Charlie’s heart skip a beat.

Twins are often described in literature, Ghita Nardin went on. You’ll remember Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum from 'Alice In Wonderland'. If we compare them to the Peter Pan twins, you’ll find that they have only one thing in common: they are identical. Why are writers so fascinated by identical twins, you ask. Well, why is the rest of the world?

At least she is, the girl sitting on Charlie’s left in the auditorium sniggered.

Why? Charlie whispered. The girl looked at him, condescending, but the girl on Charlie’s right took pity on him, She’s dating one of the Woods twins, Eric isn’t it?

I thought it was Martin, left replied.

The Woods? Charlie said dumbfounded. He’d always thought that the Woods twins were gay, but then again he’d always thought himself straight. No need to involve the girls in that.

    I know them.

Ooh, do you now? said right.

They lived next door to us in Wolverhampton when we were kids.

Aren’t you lucky! said left. Eric is SOO sexy!

But Martin is much sweeter, right objected. Charlie left it to the girls to debate, which of the Woods was the most delightful.

The twins had always been good to him when he was a child. And it was because of them that he’d decided to study literature. At an early age Martin had introduced him to Shakespeare and Eric to Lord Byron.

Charlie had always thought the twins gay and in love with each other as he had seen them kiss when he was seven. But they had never displayed any homosexual behaviour towards Charlie, so maybe they weren’t gay after all. They wouldn’t be able to pull a bird like Ghita Nardin if they were.

Quiet, please! Ghita Nardin’s sensual voice cut through the auditorium and the girls went silent. KAA! Charlie blushed on their behalf, then lost himself in Ghita’s torn beauty.

All of Charlie’s fellow students thought Charlie to be gay as he was living with an older man and had done so for more than two years. Rufus Fox his name was and he used to be the world’s greatest manga-ka, doing BL books, BL being short for boys’ love.

BOYS’ LOVE. It was the common phrase for what people - especially in the West - liked to call yaoi, the Japanese acronym of "Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi meaning No climax, no point, no meaning". And that was exactly it. BL was gay erotica made for the pleasure of heterosexual women, the stories having absolutely no climax, no point and no meaning, just showing guys being tender and raunchy in each other’s company, falling in love with each other and making love to each other. Masturbation fantasies for women, as Rufus used to put it.

Before Charlie met Rufus he’d never been with a man and frankly he still doubted if he was gay. Last year they had been in Japan where Charlie had fallen in love with a Japanese woman, so he couldn’t be gay, could he? Still the cat was out of the bag on campus as Charlie had taken Rufus with him to a campus party two years ago and his fellow students never let him forget it. The guys thought him a freaking homo, the girls probably did too, but they avoided him in silence whereas the guys called him nasty names, both behind his back and to his face.

When Charlie had moved to London to study, he had thought it would be great, but no. He’d always imagined getting a Ph.D. degree in English Literature, but now he thought about opting out with a Master’s instead, as he couldn’t stand the atmosphere on campus. He felt so lonely, actually he was lonely outside campus as well, only Rufus being there for him. But now he wasn’t even sure if he wanted to be with Rufus anymore.

He looked at Ghita. God, she was beautiful! When the lecture was over, Charlie saw her hook up with a plump female psychology student in the corridor, the two girls leaving arm in arm. He followed them with his eyes, wishing that Ghita was leaving with him instead.

Charlie made his way back to Kensington where he shared a flat with Rufus. Rufus had been living there for ages and it was quite a luxurious flat. Charlie had his own room, which was lavishly furnished, almost like a hotel suite, but he only used it for studying, as he always slept with Rufus in his bedroom.

When Charlie returned from campus, Rufus was in, but Charlie didn’t even bother to kiss him hello. Rufus sat in front of the telly in the living room, smiling when Charlie entered and stretching his neck a little to receive that kiss that never came. He looked at Charlie with sad eyes, then he smiled and said, Rough day at the university?

As usual. I’d better do some homework before I make dinner.

    Sure.

Charlie left Rufus in the living room and went to his own room, feeling both shame and defiance from leaving his lover on his own.

When he had first moved in with Rufus, it was as his housekeeper, but as time went by they had become lovers as well. Charlie had never thought about living with a man before, let alone sleep with him, but Rufus…there was something about Rufus, he was so alluring, so tender, so…well, sweet. Or at least that was what Charlie had thought until last year. Now he wasn’t sure anymore.

Last year Rufus’ dad had been in London for a week, staying in the flat with Rufus and Charlie and Rufus had been scary. Charlie could still feel droplets of sweat emerge on his forehead when he thought about it, his hair standing on end with discomfort. Of course Rufus’ dad had been horrible, mistaking Charlie for a servant and scolding his son for being gay, but still… Rufus had been cold, hateful, spiteful even and Charlie couldn’t stand it. He couldn’t bear seeing that sweet lover of his being so full of hate.

Since then Charlie had been on the lookout for something in Rufus’ voice or behaviour that he could interpret as hate or scorn, although he hadn’t found anything. Still Charlie knew that Rufus was capable of hating. He was not the Good Samaritan that Charlie had believed him to be and that made Charlie think about leaving him.

Rufus had noticed it of course. Despite his eccentric behaviour he was very sensitive and you can’t live together for a year without one part of a couple realising that the other part isn’t quite happy with the relationship. Sometimes Rufus would try to talk about it, but Charlie always cut him off.

You’ve been acting weird ever since Father was here, Rufus would say and look at Charlie with inquisitive eyes, but when he didn’t get an answer, Rufus would sigh, Father has that affect on people.

But it wasn’t Rufus’ father, who had changed Charlie, it was Rufus himself. He just couldn’t bring himself to say it. He couldn’t bring himself to say those blasted words that his mind kept repeating over and over again, I’m not in love with you anymore, Rufus.

Charlie made chicken with rice and peas for dinner although he knew that Rufus preferred fish. Rufus couldn’t complain, as he had no idea of how to cook, so he had to eat whatever Charlie served. Come to think of it, it was a bit ridiculous that a guy ten years Charlie’s senior couldn’t cook, but often Rufus was as helpless as a baby, especially when it came to kitchen appliances and other electronic devises.

Rufus looked at his plate and sighed, Ah, chicken. Again. You want wine with it?

    Nah, not on a weekday.

You used to like it before. I think we have a bottle of white wine in the fridge.

We have five, but no thank you.

Oh, well, Rufus sighed and tried to separate the drumstick from the rest of the chicken with his knife and fork.

Use your fingers, Charlie muttered. It’s okay to do that when it’s poultry.

But it’s so messy! Rufus objected. He had quite a high-pitched, affected voice that sometimes got on Charlie’s nerves.

    Suit yourself.

They ate in silence, until Rufus said, It’s Tuesday today.

    And?

I’ve been to the recycle centre today.

Rufus hadn’t worked for years, but every Tuesday he volunteered at a recycle centre, recycling used clothes. The clothes were sorted and washed and either sold in second hand shops or shipped off to poor countries.

You always ask how my day was when I’ve been to the recycle centre, Rufus continued.

Hmpf. How was your day then?

Probably better than yours, Rufus smiled. You seem a regular sourpuss.

    I’m just tired.

Rufus looked at him, concern in his eyes, then reached out his hand to gently touch Charlie’s cheek, Poor Sweet Pea.

SWEET PEA. GYAHH! It was a name that Rufus had started calling Charlie when they were in Japan. Back then Charlie had found it cute, now it was just annoying. Charlie pulled away from the caress. Actually there were loads of things about Rufus that were quite annoying. Charlie’s mind started making a list.

    1. His infatuation with everything cute. For God’s sake, the man wore bunny slippers, he had panda wallpaper and he took baths with rubber ducks! What did he think he was? A bloody shotacon? He sure acted like a little boy!

    2. His habit of always watching telly. It was sickening. Instead of doing more books, he spent his days in front of the telly. It had been really awful last month. Before Charlie met Rufus, Rufus had done a very successful BL series called 'Cherry Love' and the Japanese had turned it into anime. Last month it was finally aired on a channel that Rufus was able to receive, and the two of them had watched it together.

Rufus had been very excited about seeing it, especially his main protagonist Star, whom he had based on a guy he had met in his childhood. But when the image of Star hit the screen, Rufus had started vomiting
