The wind howled through the tree branches overheard like a banshee, whipping them to and fro and tearing at Kyra’s hair as she knelt downwind behind a bush. The orange tabby cat she had been stalking was sitting on the other side of that same bush, apparently unaware of her presence. She was so hungry now she could taste his blood already, but the little bastard was proving a lot harder to catch than she had anticipated. Every time she got close enough to have a chance at catching him, even when she was careful to stay downwind, he would suddenly look directly at her and stare her dead in the eye a few moments before presenting his backside and streaking away. It seemed to Kyra as if he were playing a game with her.

No, don’t be absurd Kyra. He was like all the other animals in this area were now – he seemed to sense she was a dangerous predator. And just like all the others, he seemed bent not on simply escaping her, but tormenting her by allowing her to think she might actually catch him.

Which was also absurd, but very little in her life seemed to make any sort of sense these days. How long had it been since Kyra had become an unwilling predator? If anyone had ever asked her if she considered herself dangerous a few months ago, she would have laughed at the stupidity of the question. She had never been a violent person. She would certainly have never thought it possible she could become a killer.

But that was before the attack that had ended her life as she knew it and begun this half-life in which she was currently exiled.

She had been alone in her house. Just sitting there, watching T.V. on the couch. Her horse, Black Star, had suddenly started to whinny from the barn outside. The panicked sound of it, so unlike anything she had ever heard from him, should have been more of a warning but at the time she had simply thought there was a dog or something trying to get into his pasture. She started outside to check on him and found a strange man standing on her porch.

    Bastard. Fucking bastard….

Kyra knew she should have run. She wanted to run. She wanted so badly to run, but as soon as her eyes met his piercing blues ones, she found her legs would not move. Everything after that was a blur. There was that mercy at least. She hardly recalled anything at all except emotions – fear, ecstasy, longing, the taste of blood in her mouth … then darkness and confusion. When she came to, it was to the sensation of her body burning. The early morning sunlight streaming through her bedroom windows was burning her alive. She found herself covered in blood, blistered from
