~7700 words
Atharron stayed up the rest of the night, puffing at his cigar, and watched as the black haired girl fell asleep. She was young. Far too young to be dealing with magic. He could definitely use her, but she could easily be tempted by the black magics. So far he had seen nothing wrong with her abilities, but she would need to be careful with what she learnt. He knew better than anyone the addictiveness of power. Even using white magic could be harmful. For the moment though, he would have her help them find David, and then he’d make sure she didn’t harm herself. Or others.

Prologue
Infiltration
Luke’s knees buckled as he hit the ground. He allowed a few seconds for the pain in his legs to wear off before looking up behind him. He saw the wall he just fell from; a good twelve feet high and topped with barbed wire that he cut to get through. A few seconds later, he saw a Stetson poke over the top and the lanky frame of Atharron climbed over the wall. Luke moved out the way as he dropped down next to him. Atharron nodded as if to say, ‘Ready?’ Luke returned the gesture.
They looked out on the complex. It was a small, one story building, though their intelligence claimed it stretched underground as well. Surrounding the building was a large flat lot. A few cars dotted the otherwise barren landscape leaving little room for concealment. Two large searchlights, one at each visible corner of the roof, slowly hunted for intruders. The one on the right made its way towards them and they ducked behind the nearest car. As it passed, Atharron peered around the darker corner, taking in everything he could before the light came back again. He turned to Luke and nodded. Everything was fine.
The light began its sweep around the corner, and Atharron got up to dash to the building. Luke silently followed. The two men stopped beneath the searchlight’s blind spot, and Atharron looked around that corner to the front of the base. He returned with a shake of the head. Guards. He motioned along the wall to the solitary window embedded in the side. When the lights moved away, they ran and stopped under the sill.
Luke slowly poked his head up and saw a narrow corridor, lit by a single unshaded bulb. He ducked as a uniformed man came around a corner. Watching the man’s shadow on the concrete, he calculated the amount of time before he would reach the end. Sure it was safe, he got up again and gripped the window frame, pulling it upwards. He slowly looked inside before climbing through the window. Atharron followed him, and they made their way to the back of the building, their soft footfalls barely making a sound.
Luke peeked around the corner and came up against the back of an armed guard. In the space of two seconds, Luke grabbed the man’s head, one hand around his mouth, using the other to grab the rifle. He handed the weapon behind him to Atharron, who promptly pointed it at the guard as Luke dragged him into their corridor.
‘We need to get to the core,’ Luke demanded in German. He slowly pulled his hand away from the guard’s mouth allowing him to speak.
The guard looked at the intruders defiantly. ‘Fire that weapon and you’ll summon every guard here.’
Atharron turned the gun around and held the butt ready to strike.
‘We don’t need to fire it,’ Luke said.
The guard licked his lips before going on. ‘We are not given access. I
