    So who is she? the technician asked me as he photographed the victim's injuries.

    That's the $64,000 question, I replied as I jotted notes.

    He paused, and I could almost hear the gears grinding and popping in his head. What question? he finally asked.

    I brushed him off, saying sarcastically, Forget it, it's before your time. He's just a kid after all, probably fresh out of college. Probably couldn't grow a beard if he tried.

    The technician finished with the photos and started scraping under her fingernails. I didn't have much hope for the evidence that he was collecting. Aside from blows to the back of her head and forehead, the victim had no other marks, cuts or bruises. She'd yet to regain consciousness, so I'd have to rely on the doctor for any further information.

    If you're from Pittsburgh or live here long enough, you find that it can be a very small town inside a big city. I stopped by the nurses' station to find out which doctor I should talk to, and it turns out that the duty nurse and I went to high school together. We spent a few minutes catching up, then she introduced me to Dr. Chen, the attending physician.
