To Professor Katz. The smoke of your pipe still perfumes your lonely study at the University of Stuttgart library, and Hildegard, your assistant, still listens for the sound of your cane.

    Chapter One

A mist hung over the land. Andre felt it touch his face. Subtle drops of water caressed his skin and burst, leaving tiny spots of moisture. He wasn’t an artist, yet these months with Seimei had changed the way he saw the world. Pines loomed darkly before him, purple and blue against a scintillating backdrop of leaves, wood, water, and rock. The constant movement used to make him dizzy, but now it left him with a pleasant buzz. He looked up into the blue and white of the sky and sighed. Beauty and longing overwhelmed him as the now familiar feeling settled over him. Life with Seimei—life had never seemed so sweet. Yes, he thought. Youth is wasted on the young. He realized how he’d passed his life busily seeking opportunity, meanwhile allowing precious life to slip by unseen. Now his senses were awake not only to the beauty of nature, but also to the unseen world few humans ever perceive.

He didn’t want to hear the end of Seimei’s story—how he became immortal. Yet, he had to do it. Could he actually ever go back to his life now? He hungered for Seimei—for his touch, for the feel of his silken hair and soft skin. He was addicted to hearing the stories. Sometimes they were funny, but more often he found himself hopelessly weeping. The thought of Seimei alone for years and years was horrific, yet he imagined staying with him, and one day finding himself enfeebled by old age. How Seimei would look at him and weep for his fading love. Could he stand being held by the strong arms of his lover, while knowing that Seimei would see his old face, ravaged by cruel time? His skin would droop and sag. His eyes would be rheumy and his nose and ears elongated by time. He would wonder if Seimei would be repulsed. He imagined Seimei gently placing him into the ground, consigning him to decay and to the worms. He imagined how Seimei would feel throwing the handfuls of dirt over his still form. Tears began to run down his face.

A light touch on his shoulder startled him. It was the lovely tengu who always came now to hear Seimei’s stories. He was much bigger than the other tengus, and his face was nearly human. He wore gossamer robes that floated around his body, as if in respect for his divinity. Today he was dressed in a color between crimson and deep plum bordered in delicate gold that glimmered in the sun. At almost seven feet in height, he sometimes stooped to look into Andre’s face, something that never failed to make him feel disconcerted. His body emitted a slight, yet captivating perfume
