Clockwork
You can set your watch to this town. Least, my little corner of it, you can. Not one thing ever changes in Aaronton, Illinois, ‘cept the stoplight. Apart from an occasional visitor passing through town, every minute of every day runs exactly the same, beginning to end. Nothing ever changes.
At 7:59 a.m., I thump open a fresh roll of pennies as the little bell chimes sharply over the front door. I let the coins spill into the final pocket of the cash drawer to finish counting out the register. Seven hundred dollars even, in singles, fives, tens, twenties, and change. Then I turn to grab the steaming mug of coffee without bothering to look at the door. I greet my first customer of the day as I hear him snatch up his morning paper. Morning, Walt. Got it ready for you.
I hand Walt his coffee. He takes it absently in one hand while the other hand lays the newspaper down on my counter. He counts out exact change for the coffee and paper. I glance at it, as a formality, but I can tell by the sound of the coins hitting the counter that it’s the right amount, as always. Walt sure won’t like it
