    Chapter One: A Good Dealer

Tom was the type of guy who had to know anyone that looked like trouble and Judas had that look down. Judas was usually arriving at two in the morning not from drinking but from painting. Judas attire consisted of holey jeans and worn out T-shirts. His shoulders were hunched over like the world had decided to take a rest on them. He wore a baseball cap that protected his head from stray paint. Judas kept to himself but always gave Tom a polite nod in the hallway of the apartment complex they lived in.

Judas’ life was in turmoil. His girlfriend had started seeing other people without telling him. He knew that Kelly was different. She was always going out with her friends. He had tried to talk to her but she always seemed to blow him off. There were drinks with the girls on Wednesdays and dinner with the girls on Fridays. The times he did see her, she wasn’t interested in hearing about the way the taper had fucked up or how the builder was riding his ass to get the house done. Lately, they seemed to be living two different lives. He couldn’t remember their last night together. His main source of sexual pleasure was his hand which just pissed her off more. Judas believed that if she was too fucking busy his hand was always ready and waiting.

Kelly, are you home? shouted Judas as he put down a grocery bag. No one answered his yell except Angel. Angel came running at full speed which would be enough to scare anyone out of the apartment. Well at least you’re here. He got down on his knees to give the pit bull a hug. She licked his face like he had been gone for months. I love you to. Judas walked over to the fridge, where a note was taped.

WENT OUT WITH DEBRA, BE BACK AT ELEVEN. Judas let out a sigh. He had a sick feeling in his stomach. A part of him knew. He just couldn’t face it right now. He was working his ass off for her. To think that she would throw away the life they had together would be enough to destroy him. Judas had to keep working. He had to keep following his feet. If he stopped to think about where she was or who she was with, he might accidently smother the bitch with his fucking pillow.

Let’s go for a walk, said Judas. He ripped the note off the fridge and threw it on the floor in disgust.

He was in the back of the building waiting for the dog to do her business. He was smoking a joint and trying his best to forget that he was being royally fucked over. He took a deep hit and let out a cloud of smoke and started to cough.

Hay man, that shit you’re smoking is going to give you lung cancer. I got some smooth smoke that will make you forget your name, said Tom as he lit a joint. Nice dog, here try this, Tom held out the joint. Judas broke the cherry off his joint and put it away for later. He took Tom’s joint and took a couple of tokes off of it. He grinned as he took a third toke and handed the joint back.

It’s so hard to find good smoke, bitched Judas.

Yeah and most guys rob you on the price. I got some for sale if you’re interested? offered Tom. He kicked a rock with his shoe and sent it flying across the parking lot.

I could take an ounce. It helps me stay motivated, said Judas.

Oh shit, tell me about it. I’m a welder and if I didn’t smoke, I wouldn’t even show up for work. Besides it helps me deal with my old lady. She rides my ass none stop.

Yeah women are good for that. They both laughed as Judas took back the joint.

You’re a hard guy to talk to. I’ve been meaning to talk to you but you’re always going to work or arriving from work, said Tom.

Well my girlfriend isn’t working so I have to keep us afloat.

That’s a bitch, but I’m in the same boat. My girl just had a baby, said Tom as he took back the joint.

Congratulations, babies are so cute, said Judas with some envy. He had wanted a baby for years but Kelly always had an excuse as to why now wasn’t the right time for children.

I love the boy but he cries all the time and my wife is ten times more bitchier, admitted Tom.

My girl complains about not having enough money so I work extra hours and then she complains that I’m not here enough. I just don’t know what the fuck she wants. Sometimes, I think I would be better off on welfare, said Judas.

Shit, then she would bitch that you were around too much, both men laughed. Judas took out two hundred dollars and handed it to Tom. Tom handed him back twenty. I just want your business not to break your bank. Come upstairs, I keep it in the freezer. You can look at my kid and tell me how much he looks like me.

I’ll meet you at your place. I got to get the dog back in the apartment before anyone else sees her.

I’m in 3B. Don’t worry about the dog, half the people in our building are hiding pets. The elderly couple on the third floor are hiding four cats in their place.

No shit, said Judas. Judas usually wouldn’t hand over money before he had product in his hand but there was something about Tom that Judas liked. His weed was awesome but that wasn’t the only reason why Judas trusted the kid maybe he just needed someone to show him a little kindness.

The baby looked a lot like Tom but Judas was stoned and the baby bummed him out. Tom was in his early twenties and had a beautiful wife named Cece. She was making a pot of coffee. Cece had long, shiny black hair and piercing brown eyes. She was tall and extra skinny. Cece had seemed a little pissed when he came in. Her petite face had been giving Judas dirty glances. When Tom went to the freezer and grabbed a baggy, her whole demeanor changed. Cece had asked him if he would like anything to drink. Judas explained that he lived on coffee, Pepsi and smokes. Tom had laughed but Cece gave him a disgusted look. Judas could tell that she thought she was a hundred times better than him.

Judas got this reaction from most women. Being a short man in his early thirties just didn’t seem to make women wet. Tom was the type of guy all girls wanted. He was of medium height with a thick head of long blond hair. His skin was lightly tanned and his blue eyes just made him that more appealing to the opposite sex.

Their apartment was smaller than his and he felt kind of sorry for them. They seemed too young to be parents. He wondered how much weed Tom had to sell just to keep the baby in diapers.

So what do you do for a living? asked Tom.

I’m a painter. It’s a bitch of a job because of the fumes and since Kelly stopped working with me, it gets kind of boring. It’s nice to have someone in the house when I need something upstairs and I’m in the basement. Judas smiled at the baby who had just spit up.

Cece, can you take Pauly? The kid keeps puking all over me. Just put him in his seat. He should be okay for a while. I just fed him. Oh no, I think he’s taking a dump, said Tom as he felt the diaper. He lifted the baby and took a sniff of it. His face changed and he gave the baby to Cece.

I don’t see why you can’t change his dirty diaper, complained Cece.

If it’s full of pee call me but I can’t handle that smell. I love how he smells after a bath but right now he stinks like rotten eggs. Judas, do you have any kids?

No but I’m trying to convince my girl to have one.

It’s a lot of work but there are times, when you’re holding them, that are worth all the shitty diapers in the world, said Cece. She was standing at a change table in the living room. Tom smiled at her answer. They seemed so in love. Judas drank his cup of coffee and got out of the apartment. He couldn’t stand to look at people in love, not with Kelly ripping his heart to pieces.

    Chapter Two: Shattered

Judas kept Tom busy, every time that Judas finished a house he went to Tom for a reward. Some people enjoy a dozen beers when they finish a job but Judas preferred a good joint and Tom felt the same way. Judas could bitch about his boss with Tom and Tom could do the same. They would spend hours just laughing in the back alley. Cece was even starting to give Judas a smile once in a while. It was a cold smile but it was better than nothing. Judas had introduced Kelly to Tom but she didn’t like him. She thought he was a user and that Judas should try to find friends on his job site. Judas really didn’t give a shit what Kelly thought. He had just introduced Kelly after she had become suspicious of his constant walking of Angel. Kelly had been riding his ass for years about his expensive habit. She never brought up her addiction to expensive clothes but his smoking was always a subject for arguments.

Judas and Tom were sitting in the back alley as Kelly walked past them. Kelly was wearing a low cut shirt and a knee length skirt. Her blond hair was teased and her makeup was done to perfection. She was wearing high heels that used to make Judas rock hard, now they were just another thing that bothered him. He hadn’t touched Kelly in months and had no urge to. He woke up every morning wishing that she wouldn’t be lying beside him but every morning she was still there.

Have a good night honey. I’m going out with Tina for drinks. I’ll be back around one. I love you. She bent down and tried to kiss him on the lips but Judas turned his face and her kiss landed on his cheek. Nice seeing you, Tom.

You too, Kelly, said Tom. He took a good look at her nipple that was half exposed as she bent over. Tom waited until she was halfway down the road before talking again. Can I ask you a question?

What? asked Judas. He was trying hard not to sound annoyed but he was failing.

How can you let her go out in that outfit? I wouldn’t let Cece out in a number like that. I’m a guy and I know what other guys think of chicks dressed like Kelly.

What the hell do you mean? Judas asked defensively. She’s a grown woman. I’m not going to tell her what to wear. Anyway, it doesn’t bother me. She wants to look good beside her friends. You know how women are. They always have to be better looking than their friends. Judas was telling the truth to a point. Her clothes didn’t bother him. It was the fucking lying that was starting to haunt him everywhere he went.

I don’t know but you are one lucky fuck. She’s got a hot body. Cece hasn’t looked good since having the baby.

She just needs some time to get her body back. You’re the lucky guy. You have the cutest boy in the world. There was a weird look on Judas face as he spoke. He was imagining the children that Kelly had never bothered to give him.

Yeah, he’s really cute but sometimes I wonder if I wouldn’t be better off on my own. Cece is sometimes so cold. Is it too much to ask for the occasional blow job? I just don’t know what she wants from me anymore, bitched Tom.

Listen to me, Judas crushed out his cigarette on the pavement and turned to face Tom. You have a beautiful woman who loves you. She has given you a beautiful baby and if she isn’t as happy as she used to be than you have to do whatever it takes to make her happy. Cece and Pauly are the best things in your life. Take a look at me; I have a bitch that goes out looking for trouble. That cunt has no plans of a future with me but does she leave? No, the cunt just sticks around like a fucking tick. I would cut off my left ball for a woman like Cece.

Shit man, I’m sorry. I didn’t know that Kelly and you were having trouble.

Well by the looks of it neither does she. What can you do?

I wouldn’t really leave Cece, it’s just, he stopped for a second before continuing his thought. She can be a complete bitch with me. I’ll work a double shift and I come home to an empty fucking fridge. How fucking hard is it to make a sandwich? But enough about my troubles, I’m going to tell you what I would do if I were you. I would get the locks changed and pack all her crap and leave it outside. Who wants to play mind games? I knew she was going out a lot but man, I’m sorry, said Tom. Tom spoke from the heart and it hurt Judas more than he could let on.

Don’t worry about us. I’ll deal with it. Can you do me a favor Tom?

    Sure.

Don’t talk to me about Kelly anymore. It’s killing my buzz. Tom laughed and punched Judas in the shoulder. Judas punched him back. To anyone watching, they looked like a couple of twelve year olds.

When we put things aside and tell ourselves that we will deal with them when the time is right, sometimes we mean, we will deal with them when they become a huge problem that we can no longer ignore. It wasn’t until months later that Judas started to loath Kelly. When she came in the apartment, he would leave. When she told him that she loved him, he wouldn’t say anything in response. He treated her like a stranger because she was one.

Judas was driving home from work early in his Chevy. He had only done a couple of hours of touch up work and he was thankful for half a day off. He had been planning on going home and sleeping for the rest of the day. The radio was on and he was stuck at a red light. He was looking around waiting for the light to change when he spotted their white Safari van parked at a motel. The motel was a rundown shithole and probably only cost fifty dollars a night. Judas slammed his fist into the truck’s dashboard.

    You fucking whore!

The driver behind him honked his horn. Judas turned the wheel sharply to the left. The Chevy jumped the curb and skidded to a stop beside the van. He got out of his truck and slammed the door as hard as he could. He looked inside the van and saw a crystal hanging from the rear-view mirror. It was Kelly’s lucky crystal she believed it kept her safe on the road.

Fucking cunt. Judas clenched his fists and slammed a fist into the side of their van. He kept punching the van until a medium sized dent was created in it. No one came and bothered him. He knelt beside the van and tried to think.

He got up quickly and went into his truck and spun out of the parking lot. He would not let the bitch see him cry. He kept thinking about the last five years that they had spent together. He thought of all the times he had held her. He had a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach. He thought of knocking down the motel room door and killing her and the prick with her. The idea gave him a nice thrill. He liked the idea but knew that it wouldn’t make her suffer. It wouldn’t make her feel. He needed to make her see how badly she had just fucked herself over.

He pulled into a corner store. Outside there were dozens of assorted flowers in black plastic pails and signs that advertised ice cream treats. He grabbed two dozen red roses and headed into the store. He screeched out of the store’s parking lot and went back to the motel. His heart was thudding in his chest like it wanted to jump out and kill for him. Judas parked his truck behind the motel. He knew that she wouldn’t see him but he would have a clear view of her. He sat there and waited. His mind kept going back to mutilating her and hiding her body parts. A creepy smile came over his face as he watched their van. Twenty minutes later she started to walk to the van. Kelly was holding hands with a six foot tall dude with long black hair. He was in Bermuda shorts and a tank top. He looked like a beach bum.

Judas shook his head and revved the trucks engine. He slammed his foot on the gas and headed straight for the two. He hit the brakes and they let out a wail of protest. The truck stopped two feet from the lovers. Judas gave Kelly a small grin. She looked like she was about to be killed. The tall fuck with Kelly also looked completely terrorized. Judas jumped out of the truck like he was greeting friends.

Hay you guys. Did you have fun? She’s a good fuck isn’t she? She surely knows how to suck. She has those big fucking lying lips that wrap around a cock perfectly. I kept telling you that you would make a good whore, snapped Judas.

Buddy, you don’t need to insult her, said the tall fuck in a deep voice.

BUDDY? I’M NOT YOU’RE FUCKING BUDDY! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? SHE’S A WHORE! Judas wanted the guy to take the first swing. He wanted a reason to beat the living shit out of the tall fuck. The tall fuck took three steps away from Judas.

I don’t want any trouble. This is really between you two. Judas laughed and shook his head in disbelief. He looked at Kelly and shrugged his shoulders.

You left me for a guy that won’t even stand up for you. I would at least get my ass kicked for you. Wait right here. I got something for you. He went back to the truck. Both Kelly and the tall fuck had a look of dread on their faces. A part of Kelly was waiting for Judas to come out of the truck with a gun. So when he came out of the truck with two dozen long stem roses, she let out a sigh. Here cunt, I got you a present. He slammed the roses into her chest.

I don’t want your fucking flowers, snarled Kelly in protest. Judas let them go and somehow she was holding them. Judas took a step toward the tall surfer bum. The guy took another step back. Judas’ heart sank as the guy took the step. She had left him for his opposite. Judas stuck his hand out waiting for the stranger to shake it but he was too petrified to figure out what Judas wanted.

Shake my hand, commanded Judas. The surfer bum shook it.

Thank you for taking the bitch off my hands. Another couple of months, I probably would have killed her. She’s your fucking problem now. Judas smiled and let go of the stranger’s hand. He walked away from them and hopped into his truck. He screeched out of the parking lot. He lit a joint and for the first time in months, felt at ease.

Chapter Three: Everyone Loses in the End

Judas went home and started to pack his clothes. He knew she would be back. Kelly didn’t know how to leave. He threw two duffel bags on the bed and opened one drawer after another. He removed anything that was his and left the rest. He glanced at a shoe box full of pictures but he didn’t want any mementos. Angel watched from the bed, tilting her head from side to side. The dog had let out a couple of whines since he had returned. Judas grabbed his stash from behind a floor board in the washroom. He collected his small collection of porn and his bathroom necessities. He was a man who lived on very little. He was grabbing his three baseball caps from behind the door when Angel came running up to him. The dog’s tail was flicking back and forth at a breakneck speed.

I guess it’ll be you and I, from here on in, he said as he threw the ball caps into one of the bags. Judas looked around the apartment full of expensive furniture. He had painted every wall in the place. He had picked out each painting that hung on the walls. He let out a sigh as he put a smoke in his mouth. He lifted the bags and held the door open for the dog to follow him out.

Fate is a very funny thing sometimes it places people in the right spot at exactly the right moment. On that day fate was on Judas’ side and it guided him from one pivotal moment to another. Tom was home early so he was hanging out under the hood of his old sports car. Tom liked the idea of being a guy who could change his own oil. Judas walked over and stood beside Tom.

Are you breaking it or fixing it? Judas asked playfully.

Right now, I’m just trying to put in washer fluid. What’s with the bag? Are you finally heading to Amsterdam?

No, I’m taking off for Ontario, answered Judas.

What? Why the hell are you going to Ontario?

My sister lives out there and I haven’t seen her in years. I just can’t handle Kelly anymore. The woman is a lying bitch. Here’s my apartment key, can you give it to the landlord?

Yeah sure, but what about your furniture? asked Tom. He had been inside Judas apartment on several occasions and knew that everything in it was new and highly expensive.

My mother would never forgive me if I left her with nothing. Judas flicked his cigarette butt on the ground. Besides I lost the most important thing.

You’re taking the dog? asked Tom. He furrowed his brow as he tried to comprehend what Judas was doing.

"She can have the furniture and even the
