Sylvia Edwards

I live near Manchester with my partner and have two daughters and three granddaughters (very young, young and teenage). Alongside my educational writing, tutoring and mobile App development, I do find time for jogging, gym and yoga to keep me busy and absorbed.I entered teaching as a mature student, having done various other jobs, in the Civil Service, making handbags and on the pizza counter at ASDA, amongst others. Once into teaching and particularly, the area of special educational needs, my passion for improving the educational experiences of children and young people with SEN, and my enjoyment of working with colleagues and parents towards this goal, has intensified over the years.Much has been achieved by schools towards the effective inclusion of children with SEN and disabilities, but there is still much to be done if the life chances of significantly disabled and/or disadvantaged people are to be improved. The buzz of being involved in the development of more effective inclusion for learners with SEN and/or disabilities has never waned and I continue to pursue this passion through my books.Watch out for my new book series for parents...

    Introduction

    Why you need this book

Do you want your child to succeed at school? Of course you do! All kids do better at school with their parents behind them. Parental support is even more crucial to success for a child with Special Educational Needs.

Success is about good communication and teamwork! If more schools encouraged and helped parents to work closely with teachers and specialists, to support their child’s learning, success would be almost guaranteed.

The focus is on Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities, but the advice includes children without SEN, who still need additional support in school. This book will help you to understand the system, collaborate with schools more effectively – and get results!

Why have I written this book?

From my teaching experiences and from countless conversations with confused, worried and frustrated parents, I feel that many Mums and Dads need to understand the education system better to get the most from it. The book is written for all parents, but those with children and young people with SEN and/or disabilities will find the advice particularly helpful and inspiring.

    About the book

The book is written in clear and accessible language, especially for parents. It does not attempt to cover all aspects of SEN. It is written mainly from my own experiences as a specialist teacher and trainer. By the end of the book all parents should have a greater understanding of how additional support systems work in most schools and be better informed to play an active role.

    About the author

I am a newly retired teacher who has spent many years working with children who have Special Educational Needs and disabilities (SEND). I have taught at early years, primary and secondary levels, across four Local Authorities. My most recent role as Manager of the SEN Support Service for the East Riding of Yorkshire involved me in the training of teachers and Teaching Assistants across a range of schools.

I have had twelve books published on various aspects of SEN and supported numerous parents and carers throughout my teaching career. My reasons for writing educational books have always been to enable children with SEND to achieve their best.

My previous books were written for schools. This book is the first of what I hope will become a series of practical books written especially for YOU – as a parent or carer.

    About you – the parent!

All parents seek the best schooling for their child, but does ‘best’ mean:
