    DEDICATION

Dedicated to my friend Erin, who has left this world for a better one. Thanks for helping me with my story Fool’s Gold. You were such an encouraging person. I’m sorry you never got any of your stories published. I don’t understand why God took you home so early. It seems like so much was left unfinished. I know you’re the lucky one but I still miss you. But I know I’ll see you again. I sure hope we get to make up stories in heaven!

    A New Life

This will be a new life…I want you to marry me. Misty’s unusual blue eyes focused somewhere in the unseen distance as she spoke. Her shoulder-length blond hair hung in unkempt strands, loose around her face. The simple, colorful sundress she wore made her seem innocent and child-like. But he had seen what she really was - what she could do.

What? No! You’re crazy! Jeff tried not to look at her. That girl was crazy and a danger. Misty had said it like it was a command. But crazy girl didn’t get to tell him what to do. No one did. Not anymore anyway. The shuttle had only just been able to make it to this dust bowl of a planet after what had happened to the ship. And the others never arrived. He and Misty, they were refugees for now, and whether he liked it or not…she was all he had left. He guessed she must feel that too. Glancing over at her, he noticed that her face and arms were streaked with soot from the explosion.

The slender young woman and the tall, heavily-muscled man continued down the dusty, frontier-town-like street. Jeff turned toward a local tavern.

You’re not taking me in there, Misty said, still walking.

Stay out here, then. He continued toward the tavern.

That’s not a good idea. She stopped, still facing the way that she had been going.

Jeff stopped and sighed heavily. Why not?

Not a good idea, she repeated.

    Where then?

    The hotel.

But we don’t have money, he said.

How were you planning to pay at the tavern?

Jeff sighed again and followed her. It had been a rough landing. The shuttle had exploded in a ball of fire. They were just able to escape the flames, taking with them only what they were wearing.

We can work for our keep, if we have to, Misty said, stepping into the darkened doorway of an inn. This is a safe place.

That night, they shared a room. Usually, he would have welcomed this opportunity and tried to get what he could out of it. But not this time. Not with crazy girl.

Thankfully, there were two beds. It was evening so they both turned in for the night. He could still see her from the light of the open window. Misty turned her back to him and, covered in the thick quilt, she looked even smaller. Then she started breathing deeper, like she was asleep. But you could never tell with her. Misty had a bad habit of skulking around at night.

He drifted to sleep uneasily, waking every so often to see that she was still there.

    ***

    Good morning, Sunshine.

Jeff’s eyes flew open to see Misty sitting on the edge of his bed. What?! He bolted out from under the sheets. Don’t creep up on a man like that. Whatcha doing now?

She smiled at him. Let’s eat breakfast. She stood and walked from the room like she was floating on air and like she was expecting him to follow.

The breakfast food was good and it was served with alcohol. Maybe things wouldn’t be so bad after all, as long as crazy girl didn’t get him into trouble.

Then he noticed that a slender young man stood on the other side
