THE TOYSHOP AT CHRISTMAS EVE
"Hark! How the bells, sweet silver bells," the Carolers sing, Christmas is here bringing good cheer.
It was Christmas Eve. Excited anticipation hung in the air. People embraced and gaily chatted. The snow was gently falling in big soft fluffy flakes, floating past the toy shop window like feathers from a burst pillow. Street lamps shone like candles, beacons in the dark on a frosted Christmas cake.
"Ding, dong, ding, dong that is their song, with joyful ring. All caroling." The singer’s joyful song echoed around the old town square. The deep rumble of cars and the soft tread of bustling, scurrying people joined in harmony with the tune reverberating off the ancient church clock tower. The clock ticked closer to midnight.
The toy shop was eerily quiet. The day had been hectic, as frenzied shoppers searched high and low for gifts for their loved ones. So many of The Little Teddy Bear’s friends had been hastily snatched up and delicately wrapped with ribbons and bows, sure to bring smiles of joy to some little girl or boy. Bilbo, The Little Teddy Bear, had smiled until his face hurt from grinning, trying hard to attract attention from high up on the lonely top shelf. Patiently he had waited and watched as his friends disappeared with smiles of glee.
I know it will be this year, I know, I just know I will make someone happy this year,
he said wishfully as he merrily waved his friends good-bye. Bilbo was excited! Just a quick fleeting look,
he thought as he eagerly peeked outside. Merry, merry, merry Christmas, Merry, merry, merry Christmas,
the carol singers chimed. A young girl rushing by glimpsed through the window. Bilbo’s heart pounded.
Carol of the Bels. Lyrics & Music: Peter J. Wilhousky, 1936. Adapted from Shchedrykby Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych, 1916.
I’ll be that special Christmas present,
he thought, thrilled as her step faltered. She continued, urgently striding, scarves merrily waving good-bye.
Disappointed, The Little Teddy Bear stared out of the shop window at the hustle and bustle of people passing by.
He sighed, Oh, how I wish to bring love and joy to someone.
He pondered, How wonderful it will be to be a Christmas present! Please,
he pleaded, Please, let it be me this Christmas.
Darkness had fallen, enveloping the town like a cloak. The soft glowing glimmer of shop lamps left Bilbo and his company of dusty old forgotten books in deep shadows of isolation on the top shelf. In the gloom of obscurity, Bilbo looked down on the resplendent toys below.
What a sight they made all lit up aglow; the glistening toy soldiers in vibrant red and blue coats, the dancing puppet waving his arms, jingling merrily the bells on his head, the splendid white rocking horse swaying gently to and fro, the elegant dolls in splendid dress, rosy cheeked with fluttering eyes and coy smiles. Who could resist them?
Wow!
Just look at the train, so gloriously real the smoke puffing, its wheels spinning in fun. His eyes passed over the dazzling balls, the red and white striped candy canes, the splendid gingerbread house and the wonderful games. A sigh of sadness crossed his brow, as he looked uptown, to the MP4 player’s lights twinkling in unison. The computer games with their covers of darkness and destruction and oh so much more. Not really appropriate to celebrate Christ’s Birth with such a toy,
he thought, sighing again in the dark, dusty, lonely shadows of the top shelf.
The shop bell jingled, chiming loudly as customers came in all wrapped
