About this ebook

December 21, 2012 is around the corner. What’s in store for us? In 2012: The Real Story, clairvoyant and philosopher Walter Shelburne investigates the deep story of the 2012 phenomenon. Beyond the doom porn of apocalyptic earth changes and the spiritual and religious fantasies of ascension and rapture, there is the dawning of a new age of humankind. 2012 is an era of unparalleled transition for humanity that started in about 1990 and will continue until about 2020. We are living in a time of existential intensity. There is excitement, anticipation, the sense of an especially meaningful time and uncertainty, anxiety, and apprehension. There is a positive story for our future if we can learn to manage the existential crisis of humankind. To make this happen, we have to discern the true threats and challenges we face in the coming years from hype and fantasy. What role will alien disclosure play in the 2012 story?

    About the Author

    INTRODUCTION

You’re probably reading these words because you have curiosity about the 2012 phenomenon. I imagine you want to know what’s driving the whole thing and whether there is something relevant for you in it.

Now we are nearing the end of the calendar year and neither the worst case scenarios of extreme Earth changes nor the best case scenarios of ascension or rapture have occurred.

The date December 21, 2012 still looms ahead. What will happen on that date? My reading: nothing special. Does this mean then that the whole 2012 phenomenon is just a fantasy with no substantial reality behind it?

The fears people had around a Y2K catastrophe fell into this category. Some people were afraid to go out on New Year’s Eve fearing a widespread breakdown in the transportation sector. But January 1, 2000 was just another day. There was no disruption of civilization.

However, the 2012 time frame highlights extraordinary changes in our world. We’re living through a time of the most profound transformation in human history. It’s important to understand the meaning of our time because the choices we make as individuals in our personal lives and collectively as communities, nation states, and as global citizens will determine what our future will be.

There is extraordinary promise and potential in the coming years and also tremendous challenge and genuinely frightening peril. The quality and continuity of human civilization is at stake as well as the physical survival of humanity and most of the other species on the planet.

We’re living in a time of great change and hence a time of great uncertainty, apprehension, and anxiety. These conditions have resulted in competing narratives of what the 2012 time means based on various projections of the future. Some of these narratives have a grain of truth in them, others have none. Many of the stories of 2012 have gripped our imaginations and caused us to wonder what we can expect from the future.

The purpose of this book is to look as deeply as possible into what’s sourcing the 2012 phenomenon and see what can be learned from the competing stories that will help us understand what is happening in our collective consciousness. The goal is to be able to put the whole phenomenon into perspective so we will know what merits further scrutiny and investigation and what we can safely delete from our attention.

Competing narratives of 2012 generally fall into one of two categories. Some come from debunkers who want to discredit the entire phenomenon and try to reassure us that there is nothing of concern there. Others are written by wild-eyed enthusiasts with fantastic accounts of Earth change cataclysms or almost instantaneous leaps in human evolution or rapture.

My thesis is that the truth about 2012 lies somewhere in between these extremes.

We are at grave risk of missing the point of the whole phenomenon if we look at 2012 as a singular date on the calendar of December 21, 2012. If we see 2012 through that lens, it begins to look like one of many other failed predictions from the past about the end of days. For example, Howard Camping predicted the world would end on May 21, 2011. There was some buzz leading up to the prophesied end date and then relief when the date passed. Then business as usual.

However, 2012 is an era, not a singular date; it is a process not just one event. It is a time of transition for humanity. The interpretation of 2012 as a countdown to doomsday or ascension or rapture is misguided. It’s the time of a transition to a new world age.

The issues sourcing the anxiety and apprehension of our time are not going to end conveniently on December 22, 2012. Moreover, 2012 Era concerns started well before this calendar year. My reading is the 2012 Era is a 30 year period of time starting in about 1990 and lasting until about 2020. Then 2012 would be an approximate midpoint in this cultural transformation.

2005 would be the historical midpoint in that 30 year time frame. However, more change is happening in the later years because the pace of change is accelerating; so 2012 is more of a midpoint of the actual changes.

This is a work of both intuition and critical thinking. I’ve made a concerted effort to research every factual claim in this book and to ground my conclusions in scientific consensus whenever that was available. But science alone cannot tell us what the future will hold. For that we need to use our intuition to see the emerging patterns and to use what clairvoyant skills we might have to see which of several possible future scenarios are actually going to bear out.

When I state an intuitively based conclusion, I preface what I’m saying with the words my reading is that … Then I make an effort to support my conclusion with evidence of one kind of other in so far as this is available.

Our intuition tells us there is something extraordinary about the time we live in. The story of 2012 is the story of what’s behind this question mark.

Let’s examine how 2012 has come to be seen as a special and unique time in human history.

    2012 and the Mayan Calendar

The story of the 2012 phenomenon begins with a focus on the Mayan Long Count calendar which reaches a completion date in one phase of its calculations on December 21, 2012. Although other authors had mentioned this before, it was Jose Arguelles who first popularized the notion that the 2012 date could signify a turning point in human history. This happened with the publication of his book, The Mayan Factor, in 1987. According to Arguelles, the Mayan calendar was a prophecy for our time.

Because the calendar ends on December 21, 2012, one common interpretation of the Mayan calendar focus is that the Maya
