Laxis spun slowly in the distance. It seemed like a planet, hovering just outside the crystal blue of Extris‵ atmosphere. It glimmered red and orange, only visible during the Twilight hours. It was, in fact, a star that lit the surface of the blue planet Extris day by day.
A thin dust swept across the outskirts of Morvis. It was one of the few cities in the motherland Reter on the continent Lynd that possessed many Aliens. These unwelcome visitors had become a problem. Ever since reaching the Tertius Galaxy became a reality to the Humans, Extris was bombarded by modified duplicates of the Earthen inmates. Each one of them came desiring to begin new lives there.
Mauveth Dojanne was wandering the outskirts of Morvis. He hated Aliens. He felt the Extralife Reven had a right to their home planet. They did not need to share it with the Humans. He himself was an Extralife, gifted by a deep seated intuition. He was young, barely thirty, and good-looking. Despite handsome characteristics, he was cursed with a critical attitude and a terrible sense of paranoia. He had dark, grey eyes, black hair and fair skin. His hair was medium-length, it parted to the left, hung over his left eyebrow, and laid back loosely on the right. There was no fire in his eyes, only a seriousness and a severity to his composure.
Mauveth was an engineer, working and living in Morvis. Many Humans were employed there too. He worked for a technological facility and it was his duty to keep the Mainframe running at all odd hours of the day or night. The Mainframe was a complex database that kept track of all the identities on Extris. The Extralife prided themselves in the art of chronology, bookkeeping, and record keeping.
Mauveth possessed high level clearance to the Mainframe, enough to shut the Frame down himself. He held the keys to some of the most classified, secretive information in all of Extris. After work hours, he made it a habit to wonder the dusty outskirts of his city. Never dreaming that one day that routine would become part of his life.
Mauveth returned to Morvis at two o‵clock that morning. He wasn‵t tired. He‵d spent hours watching Laxis bend to kiss Extris. It was so close and one day he hoped to live there instead. Extris was beautiful, but tainted by Human activity, he reasoned. And thus his desired to live on Laxis instead. He reached his apartment. His girlfriend was home.
Vera, you‵re back early,
he mumbled as he came in.
Vera‵s violet eyes flashed behind his back. She ran her long, thin fingers through her blond hair. So are you.
Mauveth‵s mind didn‵t work the way Vera wanted it to. If she had created him she would be able to read his mind and be able to predict his every word and move. But, she had not created him and thus she had to live with it. Mauveth was not easily excitable as much as she wished him to be. She could never rile him up as much as she tried. She watched him proceed to sit down beside her to watch TV. She gazed at him, impudence in her arched eyebrows.
They heard.
About?
You‵re prowling around the Mainframe after hours. They know.
Mauveth frowned. You mean, they were told.
Vera smiled slowly. No, my dear.
Really?
his brows curved dangerously.
Oh, please, Mauv. Don‵t.
Vera laid a hand on his arm. He drew back. I‵m thirsty. Get me some water, please.
Vera rose and left. When she returned she bore the mysterious look of smugness. Mauveth took no notice. He was wont to ignore the idiosyncrasies of others. He was thirsty and his fatigue was catching up with him. He felt justified. He took the water, drunk it down, and proceeded to fall asleep.
Well, whatever it is, they found out. I‵d be careful if I were you,
Vera warned slyly. Don‵t be too sure of your surroundings.
Mauveth opened one eye." Let me sleep. I don‵t feel well. You don‵t know
