    Chapter 1

It was approximately 8:30 p.m. on a warm still night. The section of the beach that he picked was secluded and quiet, except for the sound of light splashing where the water met the sand. The night’s sky, filled with an overcast of clouds, allowed random beams of moonlight to pass through them, illuminating the ocean’s rippled surface.

He had a bottle of wine in one hand and one long stemmed rose in the other. He anxiously awaited their date. He met her a month ago, and ever since then he had thought of this moment alone with her in this setting, it would be perfect. She worked a lot and could never meet with him except in the early to late evenings, which was fine with him at this point as he didn’t want to seem impatient or selfish. He glanced down at his watch; she would be there soon.

Suddenly a light breeze blew across the path directly in front of him that he did not pay too much mind to, and then from around the corner of a large boulder to his left, she appeared. She was approximately five foot six to five foot seven; had a shapely athletically built figure; smooth pale brownish colored skin; slightly arched eyebrows that accentuated her beautiful hazel eyes. Her shiny, dark brown, wavy mid-back length hair lay evenly across both of her shoulders. She wore a fitting black dress—that wasn’t too tight but did accent her figure—with long lacey sleeves and ruffled cuffs. She looked royally beautiful.

He was speechless for a moment and then said, Wow, you look absolutely beautiful and I feel overdressed, followed by a smile. She stood there silently for a short moment staring directly into his eyes. Suddenly, with the moonlight reflecting brightly off her now slightly sunken eyes, the white around her hazel pupils slowly turned blood-red and her canines grew approximately an inch longer, which were visible from her partially opened mouth. Then without warning, she struck. Before he could think, she was on him. Holding him up with her hands, her head buried deep into the right side of his neck, he started moaning in pain. In a few moments, his moans slowly stopped and his watery eyes began to close. The rose slowly slipped from his hand and fell to the sand as the vision of moonlight faded from the edges of his view to blackness.

She gently laid his body to the ground and stepped back; at the same time, you could see a glimpse of sharp, inch-long bloodstained canines as her mouth slowly closed. As the color quickly returned to her complexion, which had faded a couple of shades lighter, one crimson colored tear flowed from her now un-sunken normal looking hazel eye, which seemed to join the blood that was still moist at the corner of her mouth where her lips met. She liked him but the hunger was unbearable and the fact that he was getting closer had to end. Her tear was more a sentiment toward loneliness in general versus her victim. In addition, being that vampires can’t cry tears, venom mixed with blood formed the actual tear. This was the first time she had shed a blood tear since the event. The many years were affecting her in a bad way.

She had to dispose of the body as not to leave any signs of her activities, so getting over it quickly she grabbed him by his feet and in a quick motion disappeared into the night. The force of his body being picked up and taken from its place of rest caused a small area of sand to rise up into the air, which then, glittering from the moonlight, gently settled back down onto the beach.

Later that night as the bushes that surrounded the left side of her medium-sized, two-level beachfront home swayed as if a sudden burst of wind had hit them, she appeared from the shadows that the night provided. Maze was home. Walking up the concrete pathway that led to the beach side entrance, she seemed to glide in the shadows, as her steps were smooth and evenly measured. Appearing in the dim lighting outside of the main entrance door into the house, she proceeded up the five steps and pausing at the door and using her key, she entered the house, slowly shutting the oversized door behind her.

Maze had amassed quite a fortune throughout her many centuries of existence. Her traveling had also slowed down immensely at this point. She lived in her current rented home for just over a year and a half. The elegant home was located right on the beachfront away from close neighbors and the public. All of the windows throughout the house were covered with 100 percent UV protection tint and blinds; marble floors, several large retro-type pictures, a large couch in front of a large flat-screen television that was hung from the wall, and a spiral staircase leading to the second floor.

On the second floor, her bedroom had a black wooden framed, sunken queen-sized plush bed covered with black and red satin sheets. She had the bed modified with a hidden bamboo cover that slid across, sealing the top completely. There was crown molding from corner to corner, one covered window, a large elegantly framed picture, large walk-in closet, and a brass floor lamp. Down the hall from her bedroom was a sitting room that had two old-fashioned sconces, one on each far side of the wall; two high back antique-styled cushioned chairs; a luscious brown and white bearskin rug, centered in front of the chairs; and an oversized French door that opened onto a large balcony facing the beach. A unique, antique style box with a lock on it, sat on top of a table located in the corner of the room. She was particular to finely decorated dwellings. Turned vampires were attracted to the same things they were attracted to as humans. Though they can’t enjoy things like fancy food and drink, they did seem to enjoy nice homes, cars, jewelry, and other luxury items, as well as attractive human companions.

Maze existed as anyone else did in the world, just under different circumstances. After the mass extinction of her clan with the exception of one other, she had spent many centuries traveling from continent to continent, city to city, and town to town; she had gained a mass amount of experience and was well refined in the survival department. Maze, quiet by nature and as part of the mode of not attracting too much attention, socialized very carefully and directed her attentions toward objectives most of the time. She was not without thought or reason; it was just that she was not one of us and did not live under the same set of moral rules. To her, other vampires back in the day were very normal, in all of their sometimes-brutal nature.

She did however, in vampire terms have a strong desire to be around others, be it human or not. Just not in the limelight, as staying in the shadows and keeping a low profile was a survival instinct since secrecy was a major part of their defense against threats. Maze fed mostly on victims that she figured would not make it to the front-page news and was attracted to people’s dark nature but that was not always the case. She also intentionally spread her feeding around the nearby highly populated areas to avoid attracting attention. With the amount of people populating the nearby cities and townships, she found this quite easy. Feeding was just what she did; it was not unlike how any other creature or human survived. She was not always this way. The many centuries of isolation, loneliness, and coping with the loss of her clan, especially her love had changed her. The vampire gene was a strong defense mechanism that would change and adapt itself at any cost to protect its host, hence the powers that they possessed.

Maze enjoyed classical concerts, plays that had an early history theme, museums, and any event that took her back in time. She actually met a human woman that she sometimes found interesting and entertaining. Her name was Elisa whom she met at an event several months earlier. Elisa, who was a free-spirited and fun-loving person, had found Maze quiet nature different from the normal but not strange at all and had considered her a girlfriend. However, unbeknownst to Elisa, there were no chance meetings with Maze. She was like mostly all vampires, a master of manipulation and influence. Elisa never questioned why they only met in the evenings and later as she figured that, she just thought Maze was a very busy person. After all, Maze had explained to her that she had inherited a rather large inheritance a while ago and spent a lot of time traveling out of town attending charity events and meetings. She knew exactly what to say and what tone to set in order to subdue humans’ inquiring nature. They were very predictable.

Maze genuinely liked Elisa in her own way but her very nature prevented her from feeling a close and deep connection with her. Elisa had been over to the house a few times and had met with Maze out in town on several other occasions. She never asked for details about Maze’s life, which was a healthy and good trait to have around her, hence the reason why she probably picked her as an associate. What they had was good enough.

It was getting close to dawn and Maze was getting ready to go into vampire rest. She dimmed the lights in the house to almost off; then closed the door to the bedroom and locked it from the inside, undressed, walked over to her bed with the shadow of her shapely silhouette following her, slowly climbed into her sunken bed, lay down and closed her eyes. She was fully aware of her surrounding and could immediately sense any changes in the environment. Tomorrow was another day; she had agreed to meet Elisa at a piano bar-club for a night out. That would work out fine, as she only needed to feed every couple of days. Lifting her hand, she took the handle to the bamboo cover and slid it close.

That next evening, Elisa was waiting for Maze at the club, sitting at a table talking to her mother on the phone. Elisa stood about five foot six, was medium built, had big brown eyes, cocoa-colored complexion, and short dark brown hair. Her mother lived out of town and did not travel much as she grew older, so she often called to check on her. Being single, she enjoyed times like these. With her high energy and heavy sense of humor, she often needed an outlet. Hanging out with Maze was one of them.

The club, stylishly laid out, catered mostly to the well-off. The piano player was playing a finger-snapping jazz tune as the patrons were in conversation, a few couples on the dance floor, and the typical solo acts at the bar. After a while, she entered the door.

Maze walked in wearing a stunning dark blue dress with a deep red accent scarf draped neatly across her shoulders. Several of the men and a few of the women casually looked in her direction as she smoothly walked toward the direction of the table where Elisa was seated. Even though she did not intentionally seek attention in these settings, it was unavoidable in her case. It is very much in a vampire’s nature to use charm and seduction as methods of enticing victims. If they were not so attractive to humans, this would be considerably more difficult to do. Just as animals adapt features over time that assist in their survival, so did vampires.

Reaching the table, she paused then with a grin said, Hello Elisa.

Hello Maze, she replied, and then speaking into her phone, she said, Okay Mom, talk to you later. Love you. Hanging up her phone, she placed it on the table. Sitting down, Maze quietly waited for Elisa to start up the conversation, and like clockwork, she did.

So, what have you been up to?

Not much, just more of the same, she replied.

I ordered a light snack just a minute ago, are you going to eat something? Elisa asked.

No, I ate earlier and I’m still full, Maze replied with a sly grin.

No wonder you can keep that figure, you never eat! Elisa replied. Elisa went on about her work at the insurance company, the men at the bar, how they were checking them out, and finally asked, How has your love life been lately?

Okay, but they never seem to last, she replied, looking directly at Elisa.

I know what you mean, just give it time and the right one will come along one day.

Not wanting to seem too distant, Maze replied, Yes, one day.

Finally walking up to the table, a waiter carrying a tray with soup and bread on the side, looking at Elisa said, I have your order ma’am.

Suddenly becoming a little uneasy, Maze moved unnoticeably back into her seat, piercing at the waiter at the same time, he suddenly tilted the tray to the right of his body. The bowl and everything on the tray fell away from the table, spilling on the floor below.

What was that? Elisa quickly asked.

I’m sorry ma’am, would you like another order on the house? he apologetically asked.

No, she replied. One close call is enough for one night, she countered in a semi-calm voice.

Let’s move to another table, maybe that open one by the window would be good? Maze suggested.

Absolutely, I’ll check on you as soon as I get this mess cleaned up, he responded.

At that point, Elisa and Maze got up—with Maze walking around the spill in a wider than usual pattern—they walked over to the other table and sat down.

After settling in, Elisa sarcastically said to Maze, Okay, that was exciting; I guess I didn’t need any potato with garlic soup anyways.

I guess it just wasn’t meant to be, Maze replied.

Later in the evening, Elisa was halfway done with a glass of red wine, and they were both just enjoying the music and people watching when two men approached their table and asked for a dance.

Elisa looked over at Maze and playfully said, Please, I won’t do this alone, just one dance.

Thinking for a moment, she replied, Okay, and then they both got up from the table and joined the two men for a modern version of the waltz.

Elisa had a large smile on her face, obviously enjoying herself as she looked over toward Maze who smiled back at her. Maze’s attention suddenly shifted to the man’s neck as she was dancing. She had recently fed, so the hunger was not too difficult to control but she could still feel his pulse and hear the flushing of his blood as it traveled through the veins in his neck. The two jugular veins on one side of his neck seemed to start
