Chapter One

He came through surgery just fine. Such a sweet little guy.

Thank you so much. I was worried about him.

Routine. He did great.

Are you sure he’s able to go home already?

Dr. Katharine Adams peered into the tiny blue carrier. The ball of gray fluff peeped at her then rested his head on his paws. Soft purring resonated in the cage. So cute. He’s fine. I’ve given him an injection of pain medication that will last until tomorrow. Keep him in a quiet place tonight and follow the post-op instructions my tech went over with you. She’ll be on call all weekend if you have any questions or concerns.

Call me any time, Missy said, smiling.

Thanks, again. You do good work here. The woman picked the carrier up off the counter and peeked at the tiny kitten.

Missy held the door open for her then locked it behind her, keys jangling. Long day. I’m beat.

Katharine pulled her nametag off and tossed it on the counter. Me, too. No surgeries tomorrow, but the Paws4U group is bringing in ten cats for Monday’s schedule.

That is a lot in one day.

Yeah, but I have to do them. I can’t let the rescue groups down.

I’m going to hang out here in the morning while on call, so I’ll intake them. Take a day off. Missy flipped the small reception room’s lights off. Grab some dinner? She headed for the back rooms.
