Rory Black

Under the name 'Rory Black' Michael D George is the author of the wildly-popular Iron Eyes westerns, coming from PP very, very soon! Writes Michael: "In my time I've done a lot of things. I've been a barber, a freelance commercial artist, a portrait painter, a grave stone designer (a dying trade), an animator and an author. I did spend a few years in the Merchant Navy and was lucky to have travelled around the world four times before I was 23. I spent a lot of time in America during those days and cruised for two summers between California and Alaska. Now it is forty years later and these days I spend most of my time writing novels under my own name and no less than seven pseudonyms. I've been lucky to number a few of my old cowboy heroes as friends, and my walls are covered in the photographs of several of my cowboy hero pals. Ive written a lot of books and have plenty more stories still to tell. As one of those friends, the late, legendary Monte Hale used to tell me, 'Shoot low -- they might be crawling!'"

    Buying Silence

I hate driving in L.A. I don't even know why anymore. I live in the Bay Area, where traffic is almost as bad, but somehow the fact that I'm out of town and sitting still on the freeway seems unfair. Or maybe it's just that the Bay Area has the advantage of comfortable familiarity, so that the traffic doesn't seem as bad. Or maybe I just don't like L.A. I don't know.

I was down there last year to help out a friend of mine. I'm a semi-professional audio engineer, which means I'm good enough to charge money when I do it, but not dedicated enough to hustle bands for work. Anyway, my friend had a band called Taskmaster General. They played the clubs around Hollywood, trying to combine ska with 80’s-style hair metal. He lived in his dreams of a recording contract, with all of the accompanying fame, money and women. I didn't know if he was good enough or lucky enough to see his dream come true, but I was willing to head down there for a few days and earn some pocket money recording and mixing his demo.

It was a Friday night, and the session hadn't gone well. The singer dropped a $700 mic, which not only meant that the band had to replace it, but that we didn't have the mic for the session. You can probably guess which bothered me more. To make matters worse, the drummer just couldn't get the groove right. He was okay, I mean he was on the beat and all that. It’s just that he was flat, uninspired. We finally quit for the night a little after midnight, and after a late breakfast at a nearby Denny’s I was on my way back to my room at the Motel 6. My friend had offered me crash space, but I didn’t want to share his couch with a small nation of roaches.

I drove back to the motel at around 1:30 in the morning. I'm not sure if it was the hush of the quiet streets or the ten-hour recording session that had lulled me slightly. Either way, I wasn't paying as much attention as I could have. I didn't hear the acceleration of the little red sports car as I approached the green light. I didn't react as quickly as I might have to the approaching blur
