I am an independently published author that finds scraps of time to write with intentions to escape the perils of a working life while owning and operating three small businesses with my husband, raising teen boys, sixteen paws (yes four shelter dogs) and a tank full of fish that keep multiplying on their own every time we look for baby fish – free fish anyone? For all of the chaos, testing of mental fortitude, strength and intuition I have endured, I have a lot to be thankful for.Recent years have put my dedication to writing time on the back burner. There were a few major surgeries within my immediate household, to then have major changes in life in general. As of 2015, I lost my mother to the final battle of Ovarian Cancer. She was a strong independent woman that I loved deeply but often saw things quite a bit differently, yet only a mother knows, you love your child no matter what - and that love will always find a way.Between our business, teens, my mother’s cancer battle and life, I have found a renewed sense of what makes me content when the tides are trying to drown me... and that is to be creative in any whimsical way that nudges me. I am back to writing full force when time allows, painting, gardening, taking pictures, knitting or my all-time favorite thing that helped me morn my loss, scrapbooking. All of these things are so very therapeutic and to be able to share with others, gives me joy.I hope you like my books, not perfect as they could be; but life is not perfect and is meant to be enjoyed nonetheless. – CJ Hawk

    Chapter One

There is a rumor that a man on a secluded mountain is turning all his household items into a studio set up from the original Star Trek scenes. I was wondering if anyone here could tell me about that. I slapped my red travel bag that I use as a purse, down heavy on the counter. I caught a glimpse of my disheveled look in the mirror behind the cafe counter. My blues eyes were irritated from the dust storm I just drove through which felt like a roller-coaster ride uphill to reach the turn off road to this town. My GPS told me to take a right, then a left and several more after that and landed me smack-dab in Barley Town. However, there was no barley growing around these parts, just dust and out of business signs on old shops in a town that looked like it lost to the Wild West.

I fluffed my light brown recently over highlighted now more like blonde hair with roots as naturally brown as the ice tea that sat half drank on the counter where I chose to sit. My five foot eight inch lean frame felt like an accordion sitting in that car for way too long to find this place. I reached down behind me and picked a clot of dirt that decided to stick to my red four inch heels. My red professional dress was still wrinkle free, which was a miracle in itself. Some women just want to thank the person that invented the polyester spandex travel blend material that does not wrinkle. I personally could kiss their toes.

As I looked around and waited for anyone to answer me about my statement as I walked in so bold and confident as if me and my red four-inch heels could take over this town, I noticed I was being totally ignored. Well, that will not do.

I motioned for a menu from the waitress who walked over slowly with her mimic stride to that of a cow wandering through a field. She was chewing her gum, like a cow chews curd. Ok, she's a pleasantly plump woman slowly meandering towards me as if she has all the time in the world. With her hand on her hip, and the way she slapped the sticky looking plastic menu down in front of me, I had reservations about actually eating from this place. What can I get cha honey?

Well, her voice was more pleasant than her approaching demeanor. Do you have any green tea? Millie? At least, her starch pressed outfit was clean and her nametag visible; however, that did not match the sticky countertop or dusty glasses stacked neatly in front of a mirror behind her.

Do I what? Have any green tea? She boasted out some long cantankerous laughter, and a few patrons in the cafe joined in. She stopped laughing long enough to bob her head as she looked straight at me as she pumped out a single word from her wide caliber mouth. No!

Black coffee, please? I casually asked, thinking what cafe did not have black coffee.

Loaded or unloaded? She continued to chew on the gum in her mouth; at least I assumed it was gum, as she asked the silly question that caught my wearily traveled ears off guard.

Uhm. Loaded? I asked as I replied.

Coming right up, one black jo-jo with half a side of cow piss and honey poop. She started to turn to reach for the pot of black coffee on the burner warmer that was behind her on another counter as I sputtered out.

Wait! A little too loudly as I noticed that several people were looking my way behind me. I caught their awkward stares in the mirror just in front of me. I just want a plain black coffee.

She flipped a clean coffee cup up that was in front of me and poured the coffee out like a maneuvering waterfall as I watched her crack a huge smile on her face. I know doll. I'm just messing with ya. Where ya from and what the heck to you want with Crazy Bill, although you might want to call him by his full name. Bill Cartwright of Cartwright Cattle Ranch.

I offered out my freshly manicured hand that had a french pearl white on my nails. Jennifer Jones of MLZ entertainment news out of... I did not get a chance to finish before she interrupted me.

"Oh, I love that show. You
