H. Lee Morgan, Jr

I'm Lee, As a child I've always had a vivid imagination, but it wasn't until I was in a swimming accident and becoming paralyzed due to having my neck broken at the age of 14 that I could bring my imagination to life, through writing. My life has undoubtedly been harsher than others, being forced to live in a wheelchair and all, but my imagination, personality and drive to continue has helped me to write. It's impossible to know if I'd still write if not for being a quadriplegic, but I've come to enjoy writing and sharing my passion and stories with others.

    Chapter 1

Leaving ones new home, friends, family and true love is never a painless choice for anyone to decide upon. Though if you value your life, your friends safety and sanity, sometimes it is best to heed to the lifetime experiences of your elders who know what you are going through. In many cases they can save your life if you are ignorant about who and what you are. The old guide the young so that they have better opportunities to survive in this overly harsh world. Ignorance has always been the main cause of suffering and death.

At least that is what Alex has been telling himself mentally over and over again as he followed completely total strangers.

It was midday once again, but there wasn’t any way it would be the same as it was yesterday or the day before. Though the sun was high overhead and not a cloud hung in the sky Alex felt both excited and torn over the decision that was made. The wind blew in from the east, keeping the hot and stagnant summer air from suffocating the six of them. The nearby farms, houses and grassy clearing were silent as they made their way away from Royal City in Alluan. Though not a word had been said, his mind kept asking more questions than he could keep up with. In many ways it was disorientating having so much to think about and not be able to voice anything. But strangely enough the person with the most answers made Alex feel like he was home while also frightening him simultaneously.

Shade and Alex continued to travel behind the mysterious people and fiends, who they’ve met only this morning. The foster brothers were being led somewhere so that Alex would be able to harness and hone his abilities properly or else he might die from another violent episode that is unpredictable.

Though they stuck to the main road, that headed south from the city, Alex’s keen grey eyes kept wandering to the men who were leading the two of them somewhere they weren’t revealing.

The man named Kikren remained impeccably attired in an expensive servant’s suit, but only until recently did Alex realize whom he served. Kikren was an older gentleman who looked to be in his sixties, but remained in fit condition. His calm and collective mannerisms showed how serious he took the position. Untarnished white gloves covered his hands that also hid a Freelan ring for some reason. Upon their first encounter in Trade city of Nicronane, he gave Marlin and Alex the new location of where to find Takka, but only now did Alex realize that Kikren knew more than he led them to first believe. His hair was grey and brushed back in a dignified manner and his mustache was trimmed and neatly ordered with only the most skilled precision that has taken years to be perfected. Though he doesn’t say or reveal too much, Kikren remains sly and cunning beyond all natural reason.

Though the manservant sat behind his lord, the other man is a Furion like Alex.

Lord Gerieg was a man in his mid-fifties by first glance, but his looks were superficial to what he was capable of. Long blond hair with gray strands tumbled across broad shoulders. His facial features were remarkably handsome and would still make young maidens swoon over him, but his icy blue irises would make them all faint in joy and pleasure. Though he wasn’t in the prime of youth anymore, Gerieg’s blue tunic did little to hide his overwhelming physique. He might only be an inch shorter than Alex, who already stood at six foot three, but his muscles far surpassed the younger Furion. Hidden from view was an ornate sword that hung from his left hip. Though his back was to the foster brothers and his deep red cape hid most of his figure Alex could see the sun’s reflection bouncing from one of the silver polished bracers that were clasped on each of his forearms. Finally, like Alex, Gerieg didn’t appear to wear shoes.

Lord Gerieg and Kikren rode atop the hulking Elo, a massive fiend lord. Elo, like Shade, is one of the Big Three. Elo is a Beran. Though Shade is now slightly taller than his elder sibling, in shoulder height, Elo stands seven feet tall from the shoulder. Like Shade, he is among the saber class of fiend, but his right fang was broken in half just above the bottom of the jaw-line. Though he is cousin to the lion, Elo’s height, speed, strength and abilities far surpass his animal heritage. What is more astonishing is that Elo is three-and-fifty years of age.

Alex looked up when a shadow suddenly crossed over the cloudless ground to see Sheer flying high overhead. She is a Fury, cousin to falcons, but standing on her talons she is nearly as large as a woman. She too is a fiend lord like Elo.

Shade brought Alex’s attention back to the ground as he leapt over a stream.

Locking his legs to Shade’s side to keep from falling off, Alex then realized Elo changed direction and headed toward the closest patch of forest. During all his many unspoken question Alex only recently learned just how far they’ve come.

They’ve traveled leagues in complete silence yet to him it was the loudest it has ever been. Royal City of Alluan is surrounded by lush forests, but for beyond the several leagues of rich vegetation, in any direction, lays a landscape relatively empty of trees. It is a logical solution for the kingdom because of the constant attacks the city undergoes from King Runkamon. The open plains offer great maneuverability in a battle situation.

Like his brother, Shade remained perpetually quiet, but followed behind Elo and left only five yards distance between them. It granted enough personal space between the two giants, but allowed room to carry on a comfortable conversation to whomever was the first to bravely break the silence. Even though Shade kept silent Alex could see how anxious he was in their present company. His pointed ears were up, alert and turned in the direction of the Beran lord. His head raised up high, looking dignified, and his muscles were somewhat tense and edgy because usually his movements are lithe and fluid. He was also excited, but not in a playful manner because Shade’s tail didn’t wag, but remained low and ready. His impenetrable coat of ebony glistened magnificently in the sunlight while the wind made the individual strands shimmer and dance.

Shade was unsure on how to react to such a daunting creature.

Alex’s left hand began cramping in realization that his grasp clutched the staff far too tightly. As Shade’s movements evened out and relaxed so too did his brother’s grasp of the weapon. As they closed the distance to the tree line Alex exchanged the Xeal staff to his right hand.

Then as they silently entered the trees Elo picked up speed from a slow walk to an advanced trot. Though he wasn’t running, Alex was amazed how such an enormous creature could move so effortlessly in such dense foliage. Shade also saw the change in the Beran’s gait and matched pace with minimal effort. A sudden flapping sound forced Alex to look up and peer between the open spaces of the tree canopy to view Sheer rising higher above the greenery. Because of her size it would be impossible for her to fly below the canopy. Soon he lost track of her position as the forest thickened and blotted out most of the sky.

Don’t lose heart, Sheer can see better and further than any other creature in our world. Gerieg broke the silence after all this time. Alex quickly tore his eyes from the canopy and realized that confident and intelligent blue eyes had been turned upon him. He then said calmly as Elo’s stride remained unchanged Though we cannot see her, she, as a Fury, can spot us from many miles above the ground. Fury are the lords of the sky and she is one of the best I’ve ever known.

Alex nodded in recognition for his words, grateful for the break in silence. From the feel of Shade’s muscles, he too was privy to the conversation. Gerieg spoke for the two of them. Kikren only glanced at the brothers and revealed to Alex that he didn’t know what his master had said, but Kikren guessed quite well because he glanced up at the canopy and went back to looking forward again, while remaining dignified.

Then Gerieg also turned forward and another silent streak ensued.

For the next hour Alex tried starting up another conversation, but every time it proved futile because his thoughts were so jumbled that he just knew any initial speech would be ruined. Shade saw his brother’s troubles and felt the same way because his ears dropped and his tail sagged. Shade also tried to help, but his questions were also stunned and uncooperative.

Then when the sun began its initial descent Shade made the first bold move he’s made all day. He doesn’t like it when he’s not in the lead or it is Alex leading, but anyone else taking that initial position annoys him greatly. Shade increased his speed slightly to match Elo’s. Shade’s movement finally had the desired effect, the three elder males finally looked over at them. They looked humored, but didn’t start another conversation.

Even as Shade’s movements through the brush were dictated by Elo’s, all remained silent. Feeling insecure, Alex had opened his mouth, only to clamp it shut when another random question began to dance in his mind. Shade was in the same predicament. For all of their attempts to talk the elders only smiled.

Just as the sun had begun to surrender to the western horizon, Elo startled them by saying Very good, young ones.

His movements suddenly slowed to a slow walk. Shade matched it again while asking What was good, Elo?

The giant feline came to a stop and turned towards the young pair, to have his passengers also face their direction. His deep and rich voice filled the silence of the fading daylight to say I’m quite impressed with how the two of you remained silent though you were warring with yourself to ask us the many questions you have. Your patience will prove an invaluable ally in your future.

Alex smiled vaguely and felt a tickle in his throat, a sensation that allows him to know his voice changes so that he may speak with other creatures. Elo, it wasn’t really patience. We didn’t know which questions to speak upon because there are so many. We don’t know if there are rules you have or if we say something that might anger you and you’ll be livid enough to attack us. We just don’t know. Shade agreed by nodding his enormous head twice, seriously.

Though you both are still quite young, you are correct in what you say, though you do not need to fear our wrath.

A sudden movement caught their eye as Gerieg tossed his right leg over Elo’s back and dropped to the ground. He patted the Beran’s massive shoulder and said It is alright my old friend. There is no need to become serious so soon. We have journeyed long and hard for so long that we must not forget our manners. You are as tired as I am and you haven’t eaten in four days. We will find a place for the night and I shall hunt for us all. Then the icy blue eyes turned upon the young ones and his skin crinkled as he smiled genuinely. Alex, Shade, there is a great deal that you will learn and we will discuss much, but it will take time for all to be revealed to you. I will be back later, but first I must hunt for my partner. He has carried me and my aid for the whole month, with very little rest. Will you help him by making a fire?

Shade turned his head and looked at Alex with one large golden eye. Alex nodded to him and said We will do that, Gerieg. Would you like for Shade to help you in your hunt?

The older Furion shook his head slowly. That will not be necessary.

Then he turned his face towards the tree canopy and brought two fingers to his lips to whistle into the sky. They were all silent for a few minutes until a sudden increase of pressure alerted them to a presence. Alex turned around on Shade’s back to see a large, dark form dart in their direction from the sky. Suddenly the shape expanded and he realized it to be Sheer. She dove between the trees like a phantom without making the slightest sounds. She was a skilled and deadly hunter and if they didn’t feel the soundless pressure she would have snuck up upon them without any warning.

Sheer widened her expansive wings one last time as she entered their midst. With grace, the raptor extended her impressive talons and landed in the open space between both Shade and Elo. The entrance was both beautiful and impressive. Her streamlined figure turned upon Gerieg as her large wings tucked themselves upon her side. Her slightly curved beak opened as her rich and feminine voice said You called for me, Gerieg?

He smiled while tucking his blonde and grey hair behind his shoulders. Indeed, dear friend. We are going to call it a night. I wished to ask you a few questions. Her head cocked to the side and he took that as a sign to continue. Are we being followed and are there any people living close by?

No, the humans that followed us out of the city were unable to keep up with the pace through the brush you set. As for human nests, I’ve seen three, but they are several leagues to our south.

Good, we cannot have anyone following us, for their own safety. I wish Allahandra trusted me like her parents did, but she was so young when we last met under more pleasant circumstances. Gerieg said and Alex wondered if his liege lord wanted to follow them. It wouldn’t be all that surprising because she sent him off so easily and his only companion and protector was his younger sibling. Gerieg glanced at Alex and then back to Sheer, realizing he was going off topic. Sheer, during your flight, did you see any wild game in the nearby area?

Her voice picked up as she gladly said Yes, there were wild boar and deer that wet my beak. Would you like for me to find them again and hunt them down?

Aye, that will make things much easier. Go ahead and I’ll help you bring them back to our camp.

Without another word Sheer opened her wings, jumped and flapped. Before Alex knew it, she had cleared the treetops and began the hunt. Then she was gone.

Alex, Gerieg said, gaining his undivided attention. help Elo and Kikren find a clearing that we can all use for the night. I will be back just as soon as the hunt is over. We will eat and talk then. But I must ask that you don’t leave a trail for anyone to follow.

Knowing that he was serious about making Alex wait even more was irritating, but at least he was clearer about giving some answers. It would be childish to ask Gerieg to stay and foolish to ignore his power and experience. Alex nodded and said Aye, I’ve waited nineteen years for an answer of any kind so I can wait for a few more hours.

For only an instant Gerieg looked away from the boy as pain flashed through his features, like Alex’s words had punched him in the stomach with all their strength. Then just as quickly he composed himself and looked at his aid. Kikren, I’ll leave matters of comfort for you to decide upon.

Have a successful hunt, my lord. Kikren placed a hand over his sternum and bowed.

The next thing Alex and Shade knew Gerieg looked at them for only a moment and disappeared.

What? Where?... Shade said, looking everywhere. Alex was in the same sense of denial. How had a man suddenly disappeared? It happened again. Back upon their first encounter this morning he lifted Elo without any effort and put him down and then suddenly appeared, staring at him from an inch away. It was startling to see a man accomplish such a feat.

Easy young whelps, Elo said while taking a step forward on massive paws. Once your training is complete you will be aware of what your partner will be capable of and their speed will cease to be so dramatic. Look here. Elo placed his paw beside a large hole that they just realized was there. "From how you and Alex reacted, I’m assuming you thought Gerieg vanished. You would be mistaken for in fact he just moved quicker that you were expecting. This recess is proof that he placed all his weight and strength on one foot and propelled himself into the trees, in that direction."

As Shade began walking forward to get a better look Alex dropped down into the grass to see it for himself. There was another sound of a landing and Shade saw that Kikren had also joined Alex and waited with a patient smile. Elo stepped back and allowed them to get a closer look at what had been written in the ground. In the small hole was a human footprint, like a perfect casting of Gerieg’s left foot.

Alex looked in the direction of the foot placement and saw another print close to fifteen feet away, but it wasn’t as deep as the initial point of Gerieg’s exit. Making his way over, with Shade following, they recognized his right footprint. Alex’s voice tickled as he looked back at Kikren How is this possible?

Lord Alex, all shall be revealed in time. I’ve given an oath to my lord that I will in no way impede on any of his teachings for you. If you need something during our travels I can get it, but your training and studies as a Furion can only be issued by Lord Gerieg, Sheer and Elo. Respect his wishes so as to not displease him. Throughout his short speech he remained calm and careful of his words, but wasn’t angry at being questioned.

Without time to say that his words were careless and that Alex was sorry, Kikren turned around and began walking. Neither Elo or Shade could understand the conversation so they looked to Alex for some kind of clarification.

    They didn’t get one.

It made Alex start to wonder what lay in store for him and Shade, with all of these new companions. They were much more patient than either of them, but that only served to annoy Alex that much more. They knew much, but what would they be willing to tell them? He already knew they guarded many secrets and stories, but would they be capable of hearing any of what the elders knew?

Heeding Gerieg’s request, they followed Kikren through the darkening forest. Within ten minutes they found a suitable clearing in the forest that was large enough to incorporate all of them comfortably, while also masking their visible presence from the surrounding foliage. It was a serene place with comfortable grass to lie on. Once they found this place Alex gladly removed his deer-skin pack and water-skins from his back and shoulders. Though they’ve traveled most of the day he still felt wide awake and clearheaded. Thinking about a campfire filled him with hope because that was always the best time to say and hear stories.

Kikren asked Alex to go find dry tender and he searched with easy success.

Coming back into the quiet clearing Alex saw Shade and Elo laying on their sides, on either side of the clearing, staring at each other like they were measuring what the others capabilities were. Not only did their appearances differ, so too did their personalities. Shade’s ears were perked and he lay comfortably on his side while Elo mirrored the laying arrangement, but his large front paws were crossed and his long sinuous tail lifted at its tip and dropped repeatedly on the ground and the brown and furry poof caught the eye.

Upon his arrival, Shade’s ears turned in his brother’s direction while Elo turned his mane and head directly at him as well. Alex realized how symmetrical Elo’s features were despite how his right saber had been broken. Large round ears listened to the boy and while his dangerous brown eyes studied Alex like he did to Shade earlier this morning. It was unsettling.

Kikren followed the movement of the giant cat’s head and stood up once he recognized the arrival. He told Alex to place it in the middle and when he did the elder aid did something they didn’t expect. Hanging from one of the lower buttons on his suit was a chain of linked gold and the other end of the chain disappeared in the pocket of his vest.

He walked up to the dry wood and reached in his pocket. At once Alex realized what the gold was linked to was an item. In the palm of Kikren’s hand lay a clear lens. It was circular and about half the size of his large hand. Around the edge of the lens is a gold housing that kept his item connected to the chain.

As Kikren knelt by the wood he looked up to see Alex watching intently. Kikren realized what he wanted to know without even asking. He lifted the lens and pinched either side with a thumb and index finger. Lord Alex, what I’ve come to understand in all my years is that many young adults your age, love to see other items in action. I am a level five utility class item barer. This lens is but one of my two items. My lens can amplify even the most mediocre of light and focus it to a point to create a fire or create a beam of light capable of seeing in the dark or I can put it up to my eye and see over vast distances. Then he tapped his breast pocket with his free hand to say My other item is my handkerchief. Though it only has a single ability, it has no limit. The item cloth is capable of removing any stain or residue off anything I choose. And once it has done its job it makes a solid ball of the debris and compresses it for easy disposal. Here is a demonstration of my lens.

Though Shade and Elo didn’t understand the conversation, Alex quickly filled Shade in because the other fiend lord already knew of these abilities.

Together they watched as the light of the sun was almost gone and Kikren placed the lens close to the tender. A focused light appeared on the dry leaves and in less than a minute smoke began rising and soon a small fire spark appeared and slowly began greedily consuming the wood to create a small flame.

As Kikren leaned away from the small tongues and put his item back in his pocket, a terrifying shriek sounded in the distance, about two or three miles away. The sound made all the hairs on each of their bodies rise and bumps coated the entirety of their skin. That shriek could only come from one kind of fiend. Alex and his brother recognized the sound all too well.

Elo grinned and calmly said Sheer has begun the hunt. It won’t be long now until we get warm food in our bellies.

Then there came another shriek from Sheer in the distance.

Alex glanced into Shade’s golden irises and he also knew the sound by heart. That sound came from a Fury’s ability to incapacitate the prey with only the sound of its voice. The sound is unlike any other and always works on their target. Even if you manage to plug your ears, the shock puts the victim into an unconscious state. Though they’ve never been on the receiving end of a Fury’s shriek they’ve seen the outcome several times. The Fury is the ultimate sky predator, just as the Big Three ruled the land. To kill the raptor fiend of the sky would be like someone killing one of the Big Three, nearly impossible to do. What’s more, a Fury’s shriek will even debilitate a full grown Shadow Fang for a limited time. Though the shriek cannot kill from a distance, a pointblank attack has been known to. Their ability is frighteningly powerful for all creatures.

Shade gave his brother a look that said ‘Just what have we gotten ourselves into?’

Alex shrugged and walked over to grab his staff and decided to bide his time by sitting with Shade. Propping his back against Shade’s ribs Alex felt them expand as he sighed and contented himself by laying his head on his paws, but his ears and eyes remained attentive on the old feline warrior.

As Alex stared into the growing fire the silence of the groups allowed them each time to reflect upon themselves. The warmth of early summer was still in the air, but a campfire was always a welcome sight. The smell of wafting smoke and the flickering of orange light is a calming aspect that Alex had come to miss. Although Shade and he were quiet and paid attention to the flames they continually watched Elo and once as Kikren left the group to return with more wood to enlarge the fire and keep enough to keep the fire going throughout the night.

Less than an hour after the fire came to life did Alex’s hearing alert him to a dragging sound quickly approaching. Both Shade and Elo heard it too and looked in the same direction the constant sound came from. Then before the sounds entered their field of vision a sound of flapping made them all look up.

Sheer had flown in and angled herself perfectly to land on a branch above Elo. They looked at each other and then she peered at the two new companions from her perch. Sheer then winked at Alex with one large brown eye. Though incapable of making facial features, she smiled at him like a proud mother hen.

Before he could ask what they did, Gerieg entered the clearing. Their hunt had been a complete success. Hung over each of his broad shoulders were two large boars and in each of Gerieg’s hands he drug a doe and a velvet antlered buck behind him by their cloven hoofed hind legs. Though he carried and dragged over four hundred pounds his pace had remained unhindered like Gerieg was merely taking a gentle stroll through the forest. His gaze swept over them all as he drug the kills over to the fire.

Just what are your limits? Alex thought to himself. Normal men your age would have difficulty carrying so much weight, but you haven’t even broken a sweat. Alex knew he brought his kills from more than a mile away from here yet he didn’t even have the look of being the slightest bit winded.

The least you can do is give me a hand. Gerieg said as he suddenly turned to gaze upon Alex.

Oh, sorry. I’m just a bit overwhelmed by all that is going on. He said in true honesty. Gerieg didn’t need to know much more than that.

Gerieg chuckled and knelt by the lifeless doe. I’d call you a fool if you didn’t have any confusion. Come, give me a hand in cleaning our meal for tonight. Once our bellies are warmed and satiated we can see about easing your worries.

Not wanting to be rude and ungrateful for all the work he has done, Alex laid his staff against Shade and pulled a knife from his pocket. During his walk over to kneel by the doe, Gerieg’s gaze never averted from him. It was disconcerting to have someone watching him closely the way he was.

Wanting to hurry on with this task, Alex plunged his knife in the doe and began the gruesome task of cleaning. Gerieg watched mainly, but only helped when he saw that an extra pair of hands were needed to expedite the gory process. It had taken Alex close to an hour to skin and gut the deer, but once the task was finished he looked over to see that Kikren had made a rotating spit out of two large limbs and a sapling. Using the straight sapling, Alex pierced one end of the meat completely through to the other side and placed it atop the limbs to cook over the fire. As the meat began cooking he began work on the second deer. Though the buck was larger it felt great to do something to occupy one’s idle hands.

    Soon, two deer were cooking.

As the doe had be cooked thoroughly Elo said Shade, you may have the smaller one. I will take the buck.

Shade wasn’t nearly as hungry, but he nodded to the elder warrior. He stood up and his coat mimicked the darkness that surrounded them. His form was daunting, but he kept an air of tranquility around himself. He walked over to the fire, used his powerful maw to hold the end of the spit and lifted his meal off the poles. He made his way to where he laid before, dropped the doe meat on the grassy ground, placed his large paw atop the hind quarters and pulled out the wood that held the food above the fire. Before he began eating he brought Alex the sapling and said to use it on the pigs.

As he began cleaning one of the razorbacks Gerieg surprised Alex by asking in a calm tone. Alex, do you believe that these four creatures were right to be killed for food? I mean do you believe it is a right to kill a living creature?

His question made Alex wonder how to answer. They didn’t know each other so it would be best to give him an answer and find a way to support it.

Without meeting Gerieg’s stare, he said Nay, everyone and every creature has only one life to live. You live how you want to because that is the only true right all creatures are born with. Unfortunately this world is cruel and the strong suppress the weak. What we should do is limit the destruction of life we cause to remain alive, so that future generations have something to see. If we killed needlessly and indiscriminately what joy will our children and their children bear witness to? If all the predators killed off their prey they would die of starvation from overpopulation. It is the same with us, if we destroy everything, life’s meaning becomes worthless and takes us that much sooner.

The silence that overcame the group was only broken by the crackling and hissing of fat from the fire.

Taking a risk, Alex looked up to see Gerieg smiling at him with a hint of pride. He sat two yards away with his legs crossed and sat properly. It was then that Alex realized that his voice didn’t tickle like it usually does when he speaks to a human. The last person he spoke to was Shade several minutes ago to see if his meal was proper, he said it was delicious.

Gerieg understood without asking. That is alright, Furions can speak to each other as humans or as another creature’s voice, the sounds matter not to us because we can understand their language. Earlier, at the city, you probably wished for other humans to be privy to our conversation so your voice changed to incorporate your will. Then he threaded his fingers together and sat them in his lap. "Now as to the answer you gave, I am quite impressed with how you see the world. It is not unlike my own. I too have witnessed the cruelty and hideousness of the world, but for all its faults it has an unrivaled beauty. You are correct in that we must limit the damage inflicted because the balance of this world is both strong and exceedingly delicate. Every choice we make has a consequence. Some are seen where as others aren’t shown to you directly. What is most difficult to do is making the right choices and dealing with the pain the consequences bring about."

You do not need to lecture me on choices. Alex said calmly, trying to not sound belligerent. Both Shade and I have been through much suffering and pain through the actions of our choices.

Your words ring true. I can see how you’ve seen much through the intensity of your eyes and your solemn words only back that conviction. With that said Gerieg gestured for him to finish the bloody task.

As he finished cleaning the boar, Elo stood and took the buck from the flame and quickly began consuming his meal with much delight.

Soon both pigs were cleaned and were roasting over the fire. Once Alex’s job of preparing the meals was complete, Kikren handed his handkerchief item over. Heeding his commands Alex placed his hands on either side of the soft blue cloth and watched in amazement as it began moving on its own. The cloth caressed his hands and where they touched, the blood, dirt and gore vanished. Alex then handed it back to Kikren and watched as he folded it empty and when he opened it up again sat was a small orb of red, brown, hair and gore. He then grabbed the orb and threw the solid object into the woods. Kikren’s item was quite amazing to watch.

When the larger of the two boar were finished Alex looked up into the tree behind Elo and said Sheer, will you be joining us down here or would you like me to toss your meal into your perch?

Her large eyes locked with his and she cocked her head to the side to say I would be delighted to savor my meal in the company of my new friends.

With that said she opened her white tipped wings and glided to the ground. As she landed, she opened her impressive talons and tucked her wings against her side. She then walked forward and towered over him.

Seeing her eyeing the larger meal Alex stood and removed the pig from the fire. He then laid it on the ground before her and withdrew the wooden spit. Rising to his full height, Alex saw that she stood over five feet tall. She was actually the first Fury lord he’s ever seen so closely before. Her feathers were a beautiful brown with black flakes blended in with them and the white feathers that tipped her wings and tail feathers were glorious. Her body was streamlined to perfection and her features were the finest of her race.

Sheer then surprised and startled Alex by jumping atop her meal, digging her talons into the skull and flanks of the boar. Then she encircled her body and meal by bringing her wings forward to shield what she was doing. Through her suddenness he stepped back by instinct. She didn’t notice his reaction to her frightening display as she lowered her head and used her beak to rip a chunk of meat from her meal.

Be not afraid, Alex. Elo said. Alex turned to see that he had already eaten his entire meal, bones and all. Sheer and I have been partners for over two decades. She is an honorable Fury and will not attack her friends.

Hearing this, she stopped eating to say Elo is correct. I see you as one of my hatchlings. I see this whole flock as my chicks and I shall protect you as any mother would. Should any danger threaten my chicks they will be the first to taste my talons. She lifted one to demonstrate. Besides you’ve yet to meet your new nest-mates, Alex.

Gerieg suddenly cleared his throat in annoyance and Sheer quickly said Never mind. Forgive me, Gerieg.

It is quite alright, but keep in mind what must be done in proper order. He said and then turned to Alex. I should say that you should forget what she said, but that won’t happen, I’m sure. Keep in mind, Sheer isn’t a patient female. She is kindhearted, but sometimes gets ahead of herself.

Doesn’t she remind you of someone else? Elo said to Gerieg with a tone of humor and the corners of his dull yellow lips turned up in amusement.

Gerieg laughed and stood up to stretch. Aye, that she does.

The older Furion then made his way over to the gigantic Beran. He then sat down again and rested his back against Elo’s ribcage.

Feeling left out of the loop, Shade asks Who does she remind you of?

Gerieg smiled grimly at the pup and then glanced at his partner for a moment. Shade, Sheer has the personality of someone I’ve only recently learned is no longer among the living. He sighed and said She reminds Elo and me of Alex’s mother, Eriana.

My mother? Alex asked in exasperation. He felt lightheaded and out of breath so suddenly, but remained in control from collapsing. How had he known my mother? He wondered. Alex never got to know her because she died when he was five and only faint memories presented itself from time to time. Maybe he can tell me about her. What was she…

like? Gerieg said, finishing the obvious question. I’m sorry, Alex, he sighed and gave a meaningful look that stopped the lad from interrupting him. but there is information I cannot tell you about as you are right now.

WHY?! Alex demanded. Gerieg’s words cut through unlike any before. Gerieg knew so much that meant more to Alex than he could possibly ever know. Hearing how childish his own tone was and seeing how Gerieg’s reaction hadn’t changed, Alex composed himself. Clearing his throat first, he asked Gerieg, you must tell me about her. All you’ve told me was that you were the former king of Ra’van and she was your wife’s aid. I need to know exactly who my own mother was. Was she a good woman? Did she get in trouble as a child? Do you know if I have any more family? Please give me… something.

Gerieg, Sheer and Elo shared a solemn look between each other and Alex before Gerieg eventually said ever so carefully Alex, we have the night to discuss certain matters and a full year to learn what you need. Please sit by your partner.

At the simple request, anger seeped into him, but Alex walked over and rested his back against Shade again. The Xeal staff remained nearby and he retrieved it to lie it across his lap. His expression became impassive to cover up the anger that flowed throughout him. Seeing this, Gerieg spoke in a placating tone. "Alex, while you are with us you will learn much about yourself, who you are and what your gifts are capable of. You will learn of your heritage and parentage in time. Though you were too young to remember me, you must trust that I know what you are going through. If I say something that triggers your abilities, do you know the dangerous consequences they have?"

Gerieg’s tone worked and the steam had gone cold inside him. Without looking away Alex asked You mean the spasms and tremors?

With an understanding that no other could, he said Exactly. Since you know about them then you know how painful they are. What you fail to grasp is that if you remain untrained and the episodes continue to be triggered they will only get worse. Blood drained from his face and Alex suddenly felt cold, even with all the summer air and fire’s heat around made no difference. Gerieg didn’t miss anything. What you must know above all else, the tremors will continually get so severe that your body cannot handle the stress and will rip itself apart.

The only sound for the next five minutes came from the crackling fire.

My body would destroy itself? So he was understating himself for Lily’s sake. Alex knew he wasn’t lying because those memories of the shakes were all too vivid. The most violent attack was back in the queen’s palace and that memory collaborated with what Gerieg said because it was much more severe than the first time his body had reacted.

    Then a memory resurfaced.

Gerieg, there was one time that the spasms weren’t as severe.

His brow came together and he leaned forward. Tell me what happened?

Alex shook his head which angered him, but only slightly. I will, but only if you agree to tell me what my mother looks like. If you tell me that I’ll explain.

He quietly contemplated for a minute until Elo pushed his nose to Gerieg’s shoulder. The the monstrous cat nodded only once. Then Gerieg conceded by saying Very well, but I shall only describe her. Then I need to hear what happened. Are we agreed? Alex nodded to the terms, feeling triumphant. Hesitantly the blonde and grey-haired Furion said Your mother was a beautiful young woman. She was tall and slender, but not as tall as either of us. She had raven black hair like you inherited and it hung low on her back. Her eyes were a striking grey as well and she was fair beyond all other women besides my late wife. His jaw clenched as he said That is as much as I’m comfortable to explain at the moment. Will that satisfy your curiosity for a time?

Alex smiled Aye, and looked away from Gerieg to stare at the canopy and stars that peeked between the leaves. He took a minute of silence to imagine what his mother looked like and neither Gerieg nor the others interrupted his silent imagination. Once he had taken enough time Alex looked to see everyone patiently waiting for him to continue. Do you remember Lily?

Elo nodded and said The fierce looking lioness with moonlight hair? Yes, we remember her. She is quite strong and protective of you.

‘hmm,’ Sheer snorted and looked away.

Elo raised an eye to her. Jealous?

"Maybe," She said and glanced at Alex to seemingly smile happily.

Wanting to continue Alex said Aye, that is her. A few months ago Shade, Marlin and I rescued her from being executed in Central City. Three sets of eyes widened, but before any of them could enter the story he continued. During our escape that powerful feeling overcame me for the fourth time. As we ran from the city I must have ran nonstop for over fifteen miles that nighy. When we were safe I only had small, but manageable tremors and soon they were gone.

Now I understand what happened. Gerieg said. What you did to alleviate the consequences of using your ability was in spending the excess energy through an exercise over vast distances. When your training begins, that will be the initial way to release your power until you learn total control. And since I’ve told you that, you will run for as long as you need to, should you be overcome by your power. While you are with us on the journey I do not believe you will need to have use of those skills nor do I want you to try initiating them, but should they happen you will run for as long as it takes.

If you truly believe that then you are a fool. Alex said evenly, after learning the key to saving himself.

What was that? Elo rumbled and his brown mane bristled in anger. He tried standing, but Gerieg placed a securing hand on his left foreleg.

Peace, old friend. He said while keeping his focus on the lad and reigning in his own rage. When Elo settled back down Gerieg said in a tight voice Why did you just call me a fool? Remember, though you are only in the beginning of your prime you are not even a match for me so do not try my patience.

Then you should not underestimate me.

Us, Shade corrected. Then he set is unwavering eyes on Elo. "Though you are all wise and strong, do not take us for helpless pups. I am with Alex. Though we still have much to learn we cannot be led somewhere on blind faith for each of you. We have only met this day, but you know nothing of what we have had to endure. The two of us are with you to learn and it doesn’t matter where we are destined to go, knowledge can be learned anywhere. I’ve kept quiet because I know this training is mainly for Alex’s benefit, but it is also for me. We both already have our abilities we were born with, so either teach us when we take breaks in our travels or we will turn around and go back to the rest of our pack."

Sheer’s eyes narrowed upon him and she asked in an aloof tone "Really? Then if you leave, your master will die without Gerieg’s teachings and knowledge."

Shade grinned and it shocked her. "He won’t, now that he knows how to release his abilities safely thanks to your master’s words. This stunned her and the others, but Shade had caught it too and Alex smiled at hearing how well he knew him. Through time and experience he will come to understand what his body does, but no longer must he to worry about dying from those seizures."

Elo rose to his full height to open his massive jaws and roared loud enough to frighten them all to the bone. Do not test me, pup!

Shade shot to his feet and growled murderously. His lips pulled back, exposing lines of razor sharp teeth and his sabers flickered in the firelight. "Do not think me a pup! Though our ages are vastly different I will fight you to the fang and claw, half-tooth!"

Before Alex could be by his side, Gerieg let out a booming laugh that disarmed the situation instantly. All eyes turned upon him and when he quieted he looked at his eldest partner. "Half-tooth! I love that epithet! It sets you apart from your cubs and brethren. Elo, be not quick to judge, maybe they are mentally prepared and we’ve yet to give them due credit. I’m also at fault for not realizing that my words could be interpreted so quickly. They are quick on learning the subtleties of words and harnessing them for their own purposes. We are also doing the training differently than any other masters before us. Keep your peace and lay down again…half-tooth."

Elo snorted to his friend and they waited for several breath-held seconds until his mane relaxed. He looked at Shade and gave a compliment no one expected. Though I am the king of our destination, I must admit you will grow into a good Alpha…one day. With that he relaxed back down on the ground.

Shade nodded curtly and went back to his resting position as well.

The only one of the group who hadn’t moved was Kikren. He remained off on the other side of camp, sitting cross-legged and watching each of them with honest amusement.

Alex’s attention returned as Gerieg said Since the threat displays are over for now we can learn about each other. Perhaps we should have started our evening that way.

How would you like to begin again? Alex asked while sitting by Shade’s side, cautious of what to do next.

Gerieg mirrored him and began petting Elo’s golden coat and down his back. How about you each tell us about yourselves, what you’ve done and your journeys that you’ve survived through; until we’ve met this morning.

    Chapter 2

Another session of silence filled the time for the next few minutes, but it was a storm of ideas, question and memories inside Alex’s mind. Shade was the same way and having the same difficulties.

Finally his golden eyes settled on his siblings and they were full of conviction. He opened his muzzle to say I’ll go first since my beginning isn’t as long as yours. It was a welcome turn of events so Alex nodded.

Shade turned his attention to their guides as he began recounting his life. I was born in the Waget isles and on the same island that Alex lived on. My parents ruled the island together as the pack alpha and beta. Though there weren’t many of my kind on the island I was the strongest of the pups of my age. My mother had a litter before me, but when I was born I didn’t have any siblings to grow up with, not that they would have lived for very long. They all heard the tone of his voice slightly change and fill with emotion as he explained the untimely demise of his parents at the fangs of his uncle. He even spoke on how it took a few days for his uncle to track him down. The story took only a few more minutes until he ended it by saying He was distracted and left me alone, but never came back. When I followed the coppery scent of his blood it led me to Alex. Since then, we have become brothers because we had no other direct family members. But as you have warned us so shall I warn you. I do not kill or hunt in cold blood or deceit nor do I kill them by surprise. That is dishonorable and I do not do it. I either alert my presence or reveal myself. If they run than I’ll catch them or if they stand their ground I’ll face them. I will always give them a chance to survive, though it is rare that they do.

That is an admirable trait, Sheer said thoughtfully. but do not forget our enemies aren’t as honorable and will certainly strike while your back is turned toward them. I have seen many deceivers and cutthroats in my time.

Who was the one to kill your uncle? Elo asked Shade. You said you followed the scent to meet Alex, but who did the deed?

Shade looked to his sibling and smiled proudly. Go ahead and tell them, big brother.

Not wanting to anger Elo again Alex laid his staff on the ground and contented himself by stroking Shade’s soft fur along his neck. I’ll explain it all soon so listen to my story. Elo conceded and raised a paw for him to go on.

The earliest memories I have was when I moved in with my Uncle Gambit and my mother’s death when I was but five years of age… Gerieg, Elo and Sheer listened attentively to his childhood. They all seemed upset on how he described himself as a weak slave child, born without an item and was the local town outcast. But despite their expressions, they seemed pleased on how he liked to read and how his loving uncle guided and took care of him like his own child. Then Alex explained about the discussion between his uncle and cousin joining the Royal Guard. They chuckled as he explained about leaving the house through an escape hole in the wall of his room and left all the hate to read in peace. Then Alex said During my late night reading, my life was forever changed. Those words pleased them even more than the story they listened to. "There was a lone person outside during the night with me, but she couldn’t see me. Well my curiosity decided to follow the person. During my tailing of the person I heard two strange voices. Only then, I thought they were human and the uncle had killed two innocent people. Anyhow the person I was following made a sound and the killer turned his sights upon the intruder.

It was then that I felt my heart pounding like never before, for the first time. They had gotten excited about hearing this part of the tale. They listened as Alex broke a stick from a tree, practically flew through the woods, pushed Lily into the stream and met his very first Shadow Fang. They thought he was being humorous when they learned how Alex dispatched Shade’s uncle and Shade defended him by adding more details until they realized the seriousness of the young Furion’s words. Then he said After meeting Lily for only a minute or so did I suddenly collapse. Shade’s uncle scratched me with his neurotoxin and before I believed my end had come Lily left. Somehow I managed to survive.

I can explain. Gerieg said with proud satisfaction. What I was trying to say earlier in your story is that you do indeed have an item. You are not itemless.

What? Alex asked in a thunderstruck tone.

Do I have an item? If so where is it? What kind of item do I have? Then his words began to sink in. What if my item… Alex began to get excited about this sudden prospect in his life. Somehow he wasn’t as much of an outcast as he first thought. Images of his past could finally be put to rest and an old pressure seemed to be lifting off his shoulders. It was a feeling like he’s only felt until recently when Lily told him that she loved him and wanted him to be with her. This joy was twin to his love for her. When this is all over he’d have much to tell her.

Before his thoughts became any more rampant Gerieg spoke with reverent pride. "Aye, Alex, you do in fact have an item, but one unlike any other and the greatest gift to ever be bestowed. Your item cannot be held or used by another nor can it be seen, and that is our greatest advantage. Most items are born alongside the human babe, but we Furions are completely different. Gerieg grinned as he said Our item is part of our body, is our body. We have the greatest items of them all. Items have special properties that their wielders can use, but a Furion’s item enhances our physical bodies beyond any other human will ever hope to achieve. We cannot lose it. You will learn many techniques in your lessons, but pertaining to this manner I can enlighten you without fear or worry. Then he glanced at Shade for a moment before saying When the toxin entered your body your item instinctively neutralized and built an immunity against it forever. It was dangerous to have happen nonetheless, but we all one day become immune to many things capable of killing any another. If you were a normal human you wouldn’t be sitting here with us now. Then he glanced at his Beran companion to tell Alex before I make any more judgments about you, please continue your stories."

I will, but allow me to say thank you. His brow furrowed, but he allowed the lad time to elaborate. Your words have lifted years of misery and self-pity from my shoulders. I was, and have always been, worried that I was completely alone in this world with these strange abilities. For the longest time I thought I was going insane from hearing all the voices when no one was around. I am deeply grateful. The older Furion smiled humbly, and like earlier, it seemed similar to a dim memory of Alex’s past. Shaking his head he explained the next chapter of his life. When I awoke I met Shade. It was about a year ago and you wouldn’t recognize him if you could see the differences I’ve witnessed. For the next hour Alex explained how they became brothers and all that they’ve done together. Apparently teaching Shade to read wasn’t that big of a deal to those who sat across from them. It seemed both Elo and Sheer could also read and write.

Then they listened to the accounts of Gambit’s execution. They each gave their heartfelt condolences. It was Elo who interrupted for a moment to say "We have all seen the suffering Runkamon’s rule has reaped. Until he is overthrown, many more will
