About this ebook

(excerpt)

At nine o'clock, an explosion startled the partygoers. A fireworks display from a raft anchored in the bay. The guests inside the saloon began to go out on deck to get a better view, and Marshall thought he would too. He looked around for Michelle, but she was nowhere to be seen, so he decided to go up onto the boat deck by himself. He did that, glass in hand, climbing the steps slowly, before finally standing at the rear of a small crowd, and watching the display against an ink black sky. From down below, on the quay, a child's voice shouted in delight, and a blonde guest standing in front of Marshall gasped at one particularly impressive starburst. Then, after a few moments, Marshall became aware that somebody had come and stood close behind him. He turned. It was Stanton.
"That's quite an impressive show," Stanton said.
"Yes, they do it very well. The ones on Bastille Day tend to be spectacular."
They watched in silence for a couple of minutes, when Marshall sensed somebody now stood on the other side of him. He turned. It was Michelle. She put a hand on his shoulder. "Phil," she said, "let's go down to the staterooms."
"Don't you want to watch the fireworks?" he asked.
"We've seen them many times. Besides, I've just decided I'd like to...you know what."
"What, now?" Marshall asked.
"Precisely. Now. During the fireworks display."
Marshall thought for a moment. "OK. As you know, almost any time is all right by me."
