I dislike leaving critical reviews after someone has obviously worked hard, but sadly, this is simply not worth your time. Appears to be a first effort. Perhaps with a great deal of training and effort, there’s far off promise. But, it appears there will be a long string of “just not quite hitting the bar of worth reading” until then. I wish the author God Speed and don’t give up. But, please work on removing the trite even boring descriptions and come up with new and unique ways of describing things and scenes. No more “her eyes looked like rich chocolate cupcakes floating in a sea of whipped cream” kind of stuff. Her nipples were hard as nails/rocks or standing proudly or incredibly erect or even worse, perky, are dated and boring before you strike the keys. Still, you gave it a good go, and I hope you’ll go after it again.

Part One: Shaping Her Desire

Dr. Jessica Cardwell admired her handiwork. Which would have looked strange to anyone who could see her, since she was beaming at a small vial filled with water. Or what looked like water, anyway. It bore a small, handwritten label which read, NPH-1.

Finished! she thought exultantly. After all this time, it’s ready at last! She set the vial down, walked over to a table and pulled several large books out of a backpack. The hypothetical observer would probably have been further mystified to see they bore titles like Teach Yourself Ancient Greek and Ancient Latin for Beginners. Not that Dr. Cardwell didn’t look like the kind of person who could learn dead languages: despite her dramatic face and slender but well-curved body, her eyes were alight with intelligence.

No, it was just that one didn’t expect to see books on dead languages in a modern medical laboratory. The centrifuges, and the racks of test tubes, and the equipment for synthesizing organic compounds which filled most of the large room, of course. That’s what one typically finds in laboratories. But not primers on Latin and Greek.

She carefully set the books down at a desk in the corner of the room, and then even more carefully retrieved the vial and set it on the desk as well. After gathering some antiseptic wipes and a small syringe, she meticulously prepared a space on her arm, measured a precise dose of the clear fluid into the syringe, and gave herself an injection. She winced as the needle poked into her - injecting one’s self is tricky business, especially for the inexperienced - but successfully pushed the plunger down and took a deep breath as the liquid entered a vein.

Dr. Cardwell removed the needle with another wince, wiped away the tiny red spot, and put a small bandage on it. She put the vial in a cooler unit and then sat back down at the desk. She looked into a small mirror set on the desk. Early morning sunlight filtered through a window and illuminated a startlingly delicate face under long brown hair. Big green eyes, not heavy at all despite working all night long, watched her face carefully, and after a few minutes… blinked.

The world was getting sharper

In another lab, a few years ago…

"I’m telling you, there has to be a reason, said newly-minted medical doctor and research graduate student Jessica Cardwell. This nonsense about the brain not making new neurons after maturity is an old wives’ tale. It may not be increasing the count but it’s constantly making new connections. And it’s not like there isn’t anybody who retains the ability to learn new things easily after age twenty."

Well, that may be so, Ms. Cardwell. The postdoc who was in charge of Jessica’s lab rotation, already cursing his luck, sounded exasperated. This was a familiar state of mind for anybody who had to argue with Jessica for more than five minutes. Her interest in neuroplasticity - the ability of the brain to take in and retain new information - was
