Grunn is not of woman born. Well... maybe not. His mother claims otherwise.Still, he's one of the most exciting and unpredictable pulp writers of our time.As a child he drew stories. Then he lost his love of tale for a few years. When he was twenty, he got lost in the wilds of Alaska and injured himself. Running out of food, he wrote letters on the back of torn and worthless topographical maps. Then he wrote a journal. Then a story. He hobbled out of the tundra, starved and crazed. He recovered, his love for writing rekindled. But it was still something he wrote on the side, in the confines of his room. They were never books to be the seen by others.Luckily for the world, in the past few years he's taken his stories and laid them upon the altar of public opinion. Chapter 2
Chapter 3
***~~~***
John?
John tried to crack his eyes open, but the rays of sun that pried into his retina felt like sharp glass, and he closed them shut. What?
We'll have to get moving soon. We'll take the Impala and get out of state as soon as we can. Possibly try for Canada.
John allowed the words to mix in with the vapors of the dreams in his head as he tried to make sense of where he was. Canada,
he repeated, the words meant nothing to him. Why?
Wake up,
Tom said. You know we have to get out of here. Especially after last night.
Last night, it hit John and a grappling hook pulled his heart into his guts. Mom. Was dead. He took in a breath of the cold air, and couldn't feel anything, but the hurt that was a hole inside him.
You all right?
Tom asked, throwing some food at him.
John stared at the jerky. Last night was coming back to him; all the details that he wished would stay away.
Mom,
John said, trying not to cry. The image of her standing over him while he played with plastic trucks in a sandpit swam through him.
Hey there,
Tom said, walking over to him. Don't try to think about it.
How?
John asked hoping for some pointers.
I don't know. You just have to think about something else. Like how we might get killed once they find out what we did and send everyone they have after us.
John stared at his uncle. That was some advice. Don't worry about your mother because the rock that just crushed her was coming at you. I guess...
Don't guess,
Tom said, his stern voice returning. Get ready and get going. Eat something.
John chewed on the jerky and swallowed. Moving the jerky to his mouth made him realize that every muscle in his body was aching. Last night must have taken everything out of him. What use were his special powers if they only lasted for a limited time? They started to fail only a few minutes into the night, didn't they? He chewed and he swallowed.
He finally got up to his feet and the pain in his hamstrings shrieked through his body. Then, as if that specific pain was a catalyst, he remembered the furry creature he had wrestled with in the basement, the fear he had when he thought something that was just like him was going to defeat him. He also remembered the lights coming on, and that creature being a man. A shot of fear pushed his heart rate up.
Tom?
Tom, sitting in the car, thumping on the steering wheel looked at him. Yeah?
You remember how I thought there was a creature in the basement?
It was just a man—
I know what we saw after the lights came on, but I'm pretty certain that he wasn't a man before that. I mean I know he wasn't.
Tom didn't maintain eye contact with John. Instead, he stared at the woods all around them. John wondered if perhaps his uncle thought him mad. And what if he did, and decided to leave him? He had done it once, hadn't he?
It happens, John. You get caught up in the heat of the moment and your mind makes you think of crazy things.
John decided to let it go. He took deliberate steps forward—there was only one angle in which his legs wanted to move—until he was on the passenger side, next to the door. Another memory hit him. Tom?
What?
Tom said, his voice leaning towards anger.
They have a picture of this car.
They?
I saw it in the house. A picture of the car, and a sketch that looked a lot like you.
Tom let out a breath of air. Arghh!
he yelled and slammed his fists into the steering wheel. He glanced over at John with an evil stare. For a moment John wondered if his uncle blamed him for everything that had gone wrong.
John took a step back. I...
He didn't know what to say, but he felt extremely unwelcome here. He missed his mother and how she never really cared about his quirks. With her, though she lost her temper, he always knew he was the only thing that mattered. Here, with his uncle fuming over the steering wheel, he felt like he was only a second away from being ditched. His mind, not wanting to deal with Tom, made a sudden realization. What if his uncle was like his dad? And if that was true, which given the looks it seemed to be, then what if his mother never wanted to talk about his father because he always acted like he was going to leave her... After all, he did leave her, and John in the end.
John felt angry with himself for ever doubting his mother, someone who had taken care of him, and blaming her for his father leaving. Then blaming her even more for not telling him about a man who obviously didn't care for him.
John took another step back as Tom got out of the car, swearing and kicking the wheels.
My goddam car. I don't believe it! And all because of you!
he shouted, casting another horrid glance towards John.
Perhaps it would be best if he left, John thought. He didn't feel comfortable with his uncle anymore. John wondered if he would even want to meet his father. Not if he was like Tom.
I can leave if you want,
John said.
Tom, breathing hard from kicking the tires, stared at the ground.
I know you think it's my fault that you're losing your car,
John said shuffling his feet.
