“What?” he asked as her eyes ran over him. Zoe only shook her head before setting the tray on the ground and crawling towards Levi. Zoe kicked and tried to scream as her feet made contact with the soft earth as she thudded off the porch.

Shut up! Sebastian hissed in her ear, as he yanked her hair harder. Zoe felt the sharp pain in her scalp and her hands flew to Sebastian’s hand, trying to break his vice-like grip on her hair. His other hand was still clamped tightly around her mouth as they moved further from the house.

Where the hell was Levi? If Sebastian had been able to reach her then surely Levi should be here by now. He had promised to come to Zoe the minute he could step outdoors. An icy feeling came over Zoe as she thought of what could have prevented Levi from reaching her. What if Sebastian had gotten to Levi first? As if Zoe was not panicked enough as she was being dragged across her lawn by a deranged vampire, but now she feared that Levi might be laying somewhere injured, or worse, dead.

With all her force, Zoe tried to bite down on Sebastian’s hand. Sebastian hissed again. You little bitch, he whispered before moving his hand from her mouth and smacking her hard across the face. Zoe cried out before Sebastian covered her mouth again.

Zoe and Sebastian were now hidden by the bushes surrounding Zoe’s property. Sebastian crouched down next to Zoe, still holding her roughly.

Did you hear something? an unfamiliar voice asked. Zoe could just make out a dark shape of someone.

I thought so, but maybe not, another voice said, and Zoe could hear footsteps on her porch.

You better get off her porch or she’ll call the cops. We’ve been following her all day, the first voice said with an edge of worry. Zoe’s heart sank when she realized the voices belonged to photographers. They would not search any harder, as they were too afraid of trespassing and Zoe thought bitterly of how she indeed would have called the cops if she had caught them on her porch.

Sebastian laughed softly beside her. I guess you should have been a little nicer to this photographers, huh?

The voices disappeared and when the lawn seemed deserted, Sebastian stood up and scooped Zoe up with ease, still covering her mouth and pinning her arms down to her side. He ran swiftly through the bushes and then cut through a neighboring property. Of course, the property was another shore home, which was unoccupied at the moment. Again, Zoe thought bitterly of how so many of the nearby homes were vacant due to the fact that the summer season was not in full swing yet.

After cutting through a few more yards, Sebastian came out on a quiet side street. The sky was dark now and Zoe wondered frantically what had happened to Levi. He should have been at her house by now, if he was unharmed, and Zoe and Sebastian were only a couple blocks away. Sebastian jogged towards an unmarked car, no other signs of life on the street.

With ease, Sebastian threw open the trunk and dropped Zoe in with a loud, resonating thud. Zoe cried out in pain as she hit the hard surface but before she could truly register the pain, the trunk lid slammed shut and Zoe was encased in darkness. Fear rose
