    Dedication

This book is dedicated to all the children of the world who are all gifts from God above. Jesus loves everyone, but I think the little children hold a very special place in his heart.

Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

    Mark 10:13-16

God & Jesus, I love you both so much!!!

    Honorable Mentions

I cannot write a book without mentioning my children who I love and adore so very much. My life wouldn’t be the same without them. When I was a little girl, I knew then I wanted to be a mama and God answered my prayer three times the days my babies were born.

Desiree Nicole, Cameron Lewis, & Branden Thomas J. I love the three of you more than you will ever realize or understand. Each one of you is such a part of my heart, my soul, my very existence. I am proud of each of you and I know all your dreams, hopes and ambitions will come true if you keep your eyes upon Jesus no matter what!

    Love forever and always,

This manuscript was put away for over a year because I had no illustrator, but out of the blue God brought me an angel named Steve Daniels. Steve, thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your talents in this book. You are heaven-sent and in my eyes you are an angel drawing an angel named Ed. God bless you and all you do.

    Chapter One

    Here Comes Trouble

It was a bright sunny day in the middle of summer and the birds in the trees were singing their songs. A little girl named Maria was sitting on the top porch step as she watched the kids laughing and playing across the street. The kids were playing baseball and didn’t even notice that Maria was sitting there watching their every move. She wanted to play with them, but she was afraid they would make fun of her. So many of the same kids went to her school and often called her names that would make her cry. Maria was tired of crying and she was tired of feeling different from all the other kids.

Maria was a nine-year-old little Hispanic girl with hair so black that when the sun shined down upon it, it looked almost blue. Her eyes were big and black and her smile could light up the darkest room. She was the youngest of three kids and there was a great age difference between Maria and her brothers. Her brothers were already grown and had moved out of the house. It was just Maria, her mother Jennifer and her father Jose living in the house in Pasadena, Texas.

Maria sighed and shook her little head as she looked down at her bare feet with their painted red toenails.

Maria? Mother walked out of the house onto the front porch.

Maria lifted her head and turned herself around to look up at her mother who was standing there. She was one sad little girl.

Smile, Mother said as she winked.

Nothing to smile about, Mother, Maria replied in her soft voice. She lowered her head and stared down at the porch.

Mother looked down at her and replied, Go play with the other children, Maria, instead of sitting here moping all the time. She looked over at the other kids playing.

Maria stood up and dusted off the back of her yellow dress. I do not want to play with those kids. They are mean to me. She unhappily looked up at her mother.

Her mother reached down and placed her hand on her shoulder and gently touched her cheek with her other hand. Maria Elizabeth Garcia, you have never really tried to make friends with any of the kids here. You want me to walk you over there and help you make some friends?

No, no, no, Mother! Maria shook her head.

Okay, Maria, calm down. If you don’t want me to help you that is fine, but you need to try and make some friends.

I don’t want any friends. Maria glanced over at the kids playing.

Mother had a hard time fighting the tears back as she felt her heart breaking. Someday I pray God will bring you a friend, Maria.

I don’t want any friends, Maria said as she looked up at her mother.

Her mother removed her hand from Maria’s shoulder as she said, Well, I am your friend. She smiled.

You are not my friend. You are my mother. You are so silly. Maria giggled.

Nah. You’re the silly one, child, Mother said as she gently pinched Maria’s cheek.

Mother, please do not touch my face. Maria looked away.

Mother cupped Maria’s chin in her hand and raised her head. Maria, look at me. You are so very beautiful and never forget that.

You have to say that, you’re my mother, Maria said as her dark
