CHAPTER 1
Boldly stated, Rowan Odell was a witch. That she was ignorant of the fact made her life difficult throughout her early years. At first the odd happenings around her were either not noticed, or not attributed to her, because she was a pleasant child and not easily disturbed. Only after having spent time with her regularly over a long period of time would anyone have made the connection between Rowan and the strange things that happened to people who were rude or mean to her.
She actually didn’t notice anything odd until she became a teenager, something about reaching puberty struck a chord with the magic within her. For the most part, it was the small things… a gust of wind coming out of nowhere on a clear calm day to blow up the dress of Tammy Ridgeway, who had found it amusing to make fun of the dress Rowan and her Aunt Agatha had so carefully sewn by hand. Tammy’s father bought all her clothes in Atlanta in the expensive shops and stores. But Rowan’s Aunt Agatha was an incredibly gifted seamstress, and the dress Rowan had worn that day was truly beautiful to look at, and everyone from friends to teachers had made a great fuss over it. Tammy, unused to not being the best dressed child at Hiram Foster Middle School in Savannah, Georgia, attacked Rowan verbally, accusing her loudly of being ‘poor’, which was true, and her dress of being cheap and ugly, which was not. After Tammy’s successful tirade, she had flounced her hair and walked away from the embarrassed crowd of girls. When Tammy began to sashay directly towards a crowd of admiring boys, the odd gust of wind had blown her skirt up over her arms and for a wonderfully glorious moment or two, her frilly panties had been exposed to the group of young men. The laughter and the taunts followed her across the schoolyard and out the gate. Tammy Ridgeway always suspected that Rowan had something to do with her humiliation that day. She couldn’t prove it, and she never forgot.
The larger things that happened to Tammy she considered luck or fate to be responsible. The tornado that had miraculously jumped back into the sky before hitting her home when she was fourteen, and the empty school bus that had rolled backwards accidentally because the parking brake failed, blocking the drunk driver that would have killed Tammy and four of her friends
