Author

Olivia Dromen

Olivia Dromen has been actively queer since the late eighties, when ze realized at the tender age of possibly-too-young that having hir hand down a girl's pants (in public, on a bus) was quite pleasurable. Other experiments followed. Ze is non-monogamous, kinky, and strangely attracted to awkward queers with cats. (Also, ze is a trans, demigirl, genderqueer, femme—hir pronouns are ze/hir/hirs.) Ze lives in western Massachusetts, where ze enjoys backpacking, drinking coffee, and having lots of sex. Ze writes high fantasy and erotica.

    About Olivia Dromen

    Across the Fire

I noticed her from across the bonfire. Of course I did, it was early in the evening and she was practically naked already. The scrap of dark fabric she was wearing as a skirt was flying all over the place because she was dancing. It looked like she wasn’t really part of the same world as the rest of us. I’m not complaining, it was quite a pleasant sight. I sipped my drink and leaned back trying to put on my cool and hoping to watch her for a while.

I guess I turned away because she wasn’t there anymore when I looked back. I wondered if maybe I had been drinking more than I thought, so I checked my flask. No, I had barely had anything yet. I shrugged and scanned the circle looking for familiar faces.

The drummers were taking turns, but the steady ocean-like rhythm was still going strongly. Not too many people were dancing yet—and none of them were my type—so I just watched the drummers. After a moment even that didn’t hold my attention. I closed my eyes and relaxed into the soothing, amorphous sounds. Feeling the warmth of the summer night and the fire, watching the shadows play on the inside of my eyelids, and then disappear, I just sat there.

I noticed you watching me. Her voice was so soft it was difficult to hear her with the noise of the drums and the other people talking. I opened my eyes, and indeed it was the dancer from before, sadly she had decided to wrap herself in a shawl, so I couldn’t see her perfect breasts this time. I don’t think I sighed too loud.

I stood up and gave her my best smile. You are quite lovely.

She raised an eyebrow. You’re pretty attractive yourself, if that’s what you mean? She left the question hang there.

I couldn’t help but grin. Yes. That’s exactly what I meant. By the way, it’s nice to meet you. I winked and held out my hand. My name’s Kar.

She let go of the shawl, baring her breastbone and grabbing my hand. Instead of shaking it, she pulled, hard. She must have practically hovered—she was shorter than me by about four inches—because the kiss that came next was square on my mouth even without giving me a chance to lean in.

    I didn’t over-think it.

I opened my mouth and kissed her back. I leaned forward into
