It was first light. Carol woke up to find herself lying naked on the kitchen floor. Her left eye was swollen shut and there were bruises all over her arms, chest, and stomach and a big one on her right cheek. Her lower lip was split open and was caked with dried blood.
With great effort she pushed herself up onto her hands and knees and crawled over to where the telephone was sitting on the countertop. The effort caused her excruciating pain but she was able to grab the cord and pull the phone off the counter, catching it before it hit the floor. She dialed and after one ring the answer came, 9-1-1 operator.
Need help.
Carol croaked.
Give me your name and address and tell me your problem,
the operator said.
